"They're all crazy," Aiden says, with a sarcastic twist of her mouth but with a great deal of affection in her tone, too, and so Stella doesn't feel guilty at all about laughing and agreeing and offering some examples of her own; she knows what she means when she says that Mac would probably go into catatonic shock if someone were to cut off his supply of caffeine, but it's another thing entirely for anyone else to mock him. Stella won't do that, won't demonstrate disloyalty by running through all his quirks with just anyone at all, but this is Aiden; she's not an outsider, for one, and for another, she has Danny to deal with, and when she says crazy and they, she's clearly including him in this statement. She knows where Stella is coming from.
Because she does, and because she's blessedly sane and centered herself, an island of calm in what's becoming the increasingly dangerous and chaotic tidepool of the lab, Stella is glad to hang out with her and to laugh at the madness instead of getting sucked in by it. It's the only time she can laugh at it, because when she's at work it's too overwhelming and too depressing to joke about. When she and Aiden are alone together, it's different; she's able to see the funny side of things, and to realize that it doesn't have to be this way, that it could still change. So she starts drinking more with Aiden, and going for coffee with her after shift or at midday, and when Aiden suggests one night that they hang out at her place for a change and get their drunk on there, instead of braving Sullivan's, it's not a tough decision for Stella to make. She weighs sprawling on the couch with her shoes off against sitting at a cramped table and watching Mac stare into the distance without talking, or go out of his way to avoid looking directly at Danny, and it only takes a moment for her to say, "You're on," and tuck her arm through Aiden's.
Two hours and she doesn't know how many drinks later, she's very pleased with her decision. When Aiden goes to the kitchen and comes back with tequila and shot glasses, Stella thinks, briefly, that this could be dangerous. Then she looks at Aiden's smile and decides that dangerous is just what she needs right now. "I can match you shot for shot," she says. "You know I can."
"We'll see," Aiden says, and sits down on the other side of the coffee table, facing her, and starts setting up the shots.
Three shots later, they're still perfectly matched, and Aiden takes a deep breath and folds her hands neatly on the top of the table, and leans forward. "Okay, so maybe you can keep this up all night," she says, a little smile tugging at the edges of her lips. "What do you say we make this a little more interesting?"
Stella looks into her eyes. "Interesting how?" she asks.
Aiden's smile broadens. "Ever do body shots?"
"Are you challenging me to do one?" she says.
"No." Aiden leans closer. "At least, not right away. I'm saying let me do one on you."
Stella wonders if Aiden is kidding, if she's just saying this to get a reaction. She hopes that's not the case. "Sure," she says, and keeps on meeting Aiden's gaze. "Go for it."
Aiden's eyes get a little wider at that, maybe just a little nervous, but she's still smiling when she says, "Great," and then stands up and comes around to Stella's side of the coffee table, and when she kneels down next to her.
"Now you know how to do this, right?" Stella asks, as Aiden reaches for the salt. "Because if you don't, I can give you some tips, or -- "
"Done this before?" Aiden laughs. "Please. Stella, do you even have to ask?"
"Maybe not," Stella says, and she would like to come up with something wittier than that, but she doesn't have a chance to before Aiden leans in close and her breath tickles against the side of Stella's neck. Stella closes her eyes, trying to focus.
"Let's see," Aiden says in a low voice. "As I remember, first we need the salt." Her tongue is soft on Stella's skin, barely noticeable at first, and then the wet warmth intensifies, a slow up-and-down stroke that makes Stella pull in a quick, shaky breath and dig her nails into the palm of her hand. Too soon, Aiden pulls away, and her neck feels cold for a moment. Then gentle fingers brush over her collarbone, and salt falls in a shower across her damp skin. She opens her eyes and looks at Aiden again, and Aiden's eyes are bigger and more nervous than ever; Stella smiles and Aiden's face relaxes.
"So far, so good," she says, and this time her voice is almost a purr. "Wouldn't you say?"
"Not bad." Stella is trying for casual, but there's a little quiver in her voice that makes her blush.
"And now the lime." Aiden scoops a slice of lime off the table and holds it between two fingers at Stella's eye level. Stella tracks it as Aiden lowers her hand.
Fingers tease at the neckline of her shirt and then slide lower; the lime is colder than she expected and she yelps a little as Aiden settles it neatly between her breasts. She starts to reach out to touch Aiden, to put a hand on some part of her, any part, but Aiden stops moving and edges back a little. "Nuh uh," she says. "I have to get my shot set up right now. You need to sit still and behave."
Stella raises an eyebrow, but Aiden just smiles at her, and finally Stella holds up her hands in defeat and then settles them back where they were, one resting on the coffee table, the other on the edge of the couch. Aiden watches this, then nods, and goes back to adjusting the placement of the lime. She doesn't touch any part of Stella's body but that one little area, and the touch of her fingers is as light as her tongue was a minute ago. When she's done, and is pouring herself a shot of tequila, Stella looks down and has to laugh at the sight of the lime wedge sticking out of her cleavage.
When she looks up again, Aiden is setting the shot glass down on the table. "Ready?" she asks. "Sure you don't need to think this over or anything?"
"Oh, I'm ready," Stella says. "Believe me."
This time, Aiden's tongue on her neck is a quick, hot sweep; she licks from the hollow of Stella's right along her collarbone and then up as she laps up the salt, lips against Stella's pulse point. Aiden's hands on her shoulders hold her in place, and she digs her fingers into the table and the couch, trying not to squirm -- or, better, to reach out and touch Aiden.
Aiden lets her go and sits back again as she reaches for the shot glass. "Cheers," she says, and tosses it back in a quick gulp. Stella watches her swallow, and then her eyes slide closed again as Aiden leans forward and presses her mouth to Stella's throat again. She moves lower, lips teasing over her collarbone and then the curve of her breast. Aiden's teeth nip gently at her, making Stella gasp a little and move toward her. She feels a trickle of lime juice run down her skin, and then Aiden is sitting up, lime wedge between her teeth.
She takes it in her hand and finishes sucking the juice out, then tosses it to one side and licks off her palm. "There," she says, and flashes Stella a wicked grin. "Now that wasn't so bad, was it?"
"Not bad at all." Stella reaches out and puts a hand on her shoulder, and this time Aiden doesn't tease her or move away.
"You want to do one now?" Aiden asks.
"Yes, but first -- c'mere."
Stella tugs her close and Aiden's arms go around her. Aiden tastes like margaritas, like the hot summer night, and her tongue slides lazily over Stella's. Stella cups her breasts, feeling how fast her heart is pounding, and Aiden gasps as Stella squeezes her nipple. Stella grins and kisses her deep, and licks a little bit of margarita salt away from the corner of her mouth before she pulls away.
"Now about that body shot..."
Aiden puts a hand on her cheek. "Think it can wait 'till later?" she asks.
"I think maybe you could talk me into it," Stella says, then adds, "Chicken." Aiden is laughing as she gets up and pulls Stella to her feet, and she's still laughing as they kiss each other all the way down the hall to the bedroom.
Somewhere in the midst of those kisses, in the midst of shedding clothes, she tells Stella that she's going to be very sorry for that remark, just wait and see; and Stella says that they will see, that -- but by then they're sinking to the bed together, and Aiden's hands are warm and her hair is falling across Stella's face, and it's too good to kiss her, to press into her body and to touch every bit of skin she can reach.
There'll be plenty of time later for all of that, and Stella doesn't mind one bit: because it's almost summer, and because they have plenty more tequila, and because Aiden is so sweetly sane and good to be around.
