11:17 am Happy belated 18th birthday Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen! Hope it was a good one. I eagerly anticipate watching your future careers in pornography blossom.
News:
In case I didn't make it clear, the 626 is indeed history. In its place however is a ( shiny! )
The folks helped out a bit with this one - between cosigning for the loan and throwing an extra $1k towards my down payment, I've been financed at 0.9% APR. My total interest for the five-year loan is less than one payment on my parents' Pathfinder, and my monthly payments have only gone up about $30. I also lucked out due to Tony's poor accounting; he says the payoff on the Mazda was only $1350, but by my count I owed at least $1000 more than that. Works for me - I only added $500 to my total price by trading in the 626. Now if only I were so fortunate in the insurance department :/
Hey, remember when I told you I injured myself punching my chair in frustration? Well I ( broke my fucking hand. )
The brace/splint combo I've been wearing for the last 2.5 weeks (and will continue wearing for at least a month more) drives me nuts like a socket wrench (it may be necessary for your reading voice to assume a Scottish accent for this pun to function as intended. Pirate accent will do in a pinch). And the smell. You'd think I had administered a thorough colonic irrigation to an elderly African elephant, without the benefit of latex gloves.
I have started learning things in my class now. I understand modes! Whee! My rhythm is improving too, but that's not saying too much.
I had the unique opportunity to legally trash the Hell out of an ATM kiosk at work, and was excited to discover the treasure trove of hack value within. A perfectly serviceable power strip, 56.6kbps PCMCIA modem and nifty compact keyboard all awaited us. Unfortunately not much else was salvaged...if only we had noticed the envelope that said ATM KEYS on it before we gave up trying to break into the safe and chucked it down the compactor chute.
I sometimes find myself wishing I could comment on posts in somnium_lux's journal. I think I have a satisfactory, if somewhat compromised workaround. Current Mood: hungry

10:06 am - Snow day The view out my front door this morning:

I had to leave my car at work yesterday. I tried driving home, and performed a very tight 180. If it had been on purpose, it would have looked masterful. Alas, I really was attempting to move in a straight line.
Being snowed in gives me some time to try and catch up on some reading. As part of my anti-procrastination declaration, I recently received three huge tomes of SAT prep stuff. On top of those, I finally got around to picking up The Sandman: Endless Nights (which is fantastic, of course) and am currently working through or have yet to start on The Complete Guide to Game Audio (not at all what I was expecting, but I intend to finish it regardless), Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician and Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (haven't even started it yet; it's rather intimidating).
I've been exploring Foobar2000 this morning. I briefly encountered it months ago, when the foobar SPC plugin was the only one to properly emulate the uniquely compressed samples in Motoi Sakuraba's ridiculously awesome Hiouden soundtrack (snatch it from SNES Music if it interests you). There wasn't much to the program then, so I was a bit confused when I witnessed the regulars of #vgmix raving about it. This site can more properly explain why replay gain is such a desirable feature, but I'm already sold on the convenience of playing emulated file formats in Foobar. The "special" installer comes with a wide variety of emu plugins, and each index within a GBS, HES, KSS, NSF or SID file (as well as each SPC within a RAR) is listed seperately on the playlist, making song selection a breeze. I've never experienced such convenience when playing SIDs, and I'm really enjoying hearing a lot of great stuff for the first time. Current Mood: relaxed Current Music: Cobra Strike - 32nd Degree

07:50 pm - Title The white...thing has been repaired (I really need to do a better job of coming up with a handle for my vehicle). At least, I think it is. I had to bring it back by because the instrument panel wasn't lighting when the headlights were turned on after they replaced the stereo, but hopefully that works again now. Oh, for anyone who cares, it is the V4 model. I forgot to specify when I introduced it, but rest assured that it is indeed a pussy car.
Anyway. This past weekend I took a trip to the town of Blowing Rock in the Appalachian mountains. Mom and Annise wanted to check out the WOOLLY WORM FESTIVAL, and I figured I'd tag along for a sort of mini-vacation. In case you're wondering, the town is named after a rock at the top of the mountain. There's some clichéd Indian tale about how some brave sacrificed himself to prove his love for some squaw by leaping off the rock, but was returned safe and sound by the force of the strong winds that blow there. Cheesy.
If you like that story, you'll love the history of the Woolly Worm Festival. See, some rednecks decided that they would hold woolly worm (read: caterpillar) races and build a festival around it. They hold the festival in the autumn, right when these caterp...er, woolly worms are all over the place. The point of the races is actually a meteorological forecast; you see, the six black and brown bands on the winning woolly worm correspond to six weeks of winter weather. Brown weeks will be mild, while black weeks shall be fierce. These people are so hardcore that vendors at the festival collect woolly worms and sell them to prospective racers for a buck each. The festival itself was drab; overpriced, non-nutritional food vendors and a bunch of hippies selling junk abound. One interesting thing worth noting was a sign posted at the festival's entrance, which read:
NO ALCOHOL
NO [something]
NO GUNS
It's a bad sign when they have to remind the fairgoers not to bring guns to a public event.
In addition to enjoying the mountain roads, climate and nature, I took away a couple of good things from the experience. Firstly, I stocked up on Gordon's Cream Sodas. Second, I took several pictures to bloat my journal with.
( They will put pounds on you )
It looks like I'll be doing some more mountain adventuring in a couple weeks when Bob's mom is in town. Anything to get out of a few days' work is fine by me. I dread going to work every morning these days :|
In other news, what with the absence of Buffy, my current actress obsession is Kristen Kreuk. I don't really follow Smallville, but my folks watch it often so I catch it here and there. Probably the best Superman story yet, but I don't think that's saying too much. Current Mood: reflective Current Music: Michiru Yamane - Don't Wait Until Night/Heart of Fire (AoS)

05:33 pm - The Great White Hope I was going to title this post "The White Torpedo" in tribute to The Stöned Age, but that sounds more like a bizarre porn flick. Anyway, while I had the digicam out and had a good shot, I thought it would be a good time to show and tell about my new car. To avoid bloating everyone's friends pages after the pics I just posted, I'll cut this one:
( click here for teen! )
Details? She's a 1996 Mazda 626, with 131k miles on her and an automatic transmission that likes to remind you of that every chance it gets. I'm going to miss the Grand Am (I'm not going to miss Pontiac's "stranglehold" seatbelts though), but I'll have to make do.

04:26 pm - Zoom zoom Bob's coworker Scott came by today with his dad. Scott's one of the few (couple? only?) people working under Bob who doesn't suck. Anyway, Scott's dad owns a car. A nice car. An '83 Ferrari 308 GTS.
