Anybody out there in internet-land experienced with resizing NTFS partitions? The Win2k installation CD formatted my boot partition with the upper size limit for FAT 32 (~128 GB) for some reason, and I'd rather have one large partition on the drive than add a new one.

Also, I know dick about networking and would graciously accept any advice to get my two PCs to see each other, talk to each other, maybe check out a flick, you know. Looking to do some data migration and I really don't want to do a bunch of physical relocation of drives.

Well try easing them into it with chaperoned "Group Dates" i.e. bowling parties or trips to the movies (nothing too risque though!) After all, just because your computers are old enough to network doesn't mean you can't still be a responsible owner!

Always use a firewall!

If you want them both to be online, get a linksys or netgear router that does NAT (and a couple ethernet cables), it'll come with super simple instructions on how to get everything connected.

If you just want to connect the two and transfer files back and forth, you can connect them with a crossover cable, set the ip of one to 192.168.0.1 and the other .2, netmask 255.255.255.0, and then you can just mount one as a share or etc. Pretty simple to do.

The router thing is less work, but will cost you more.

But is also more scalable in the long run.

Yeah, a router is definitely the best long term solution. Connecting via crossover is kinda silly, to be honest.

I am behind a NAT router, but neither machine shows up on the other's network when I share sumpin'.

Can you ping one from the other? You might also have to open ports on the router.

I have not tried! What kind of port opening are we talking about?

Whatever ports windows network shares use.. honestly not sure what ports they are though, it isn't stuff I play with a lot. For all I know you dont even need to do that, cripes.

Also, try googling for like, the kind of router and windows file sharing or samba shares or something along those lines, might help if there's something specific you need to do.

Actually my question was a little more technical. I can set up port forwarding or port triggering on my router, but there's nothing for configuring ports between two machines behind the NAT.

In that case you probably shouldn't need to, I don't think.. try pinging to see if they can see eachother, and check if you have software firewalls on each if that doesn't work. If pinging does work, then it should just be setting up the shares properly.

Because I am a very bad network administrator, I haven't been running any firewalls other than the router itself. I will test pinging later, but I'm not going to turn the old PC on tonight. I lack KVM switching goodness, so it's kind of a pain and I'm pooped :P

It occurs to me however that I don't actually have two proper lengths of ethernet cable and instead am using this USB interface thing that came with the router for one of the PCs. Maybe this USB thingy is probably stupid!

No sweat man, happy to help when you're ready to go. The USB thing might be horked, might not be.. who knows.

Huh. It's working now, but I couldn't tell you why because nothing's been changed. Now I've just got to figure out why nothing wants to acknowledge the presence of my old 4 GB drive. I forgot to transfer my PlayStation DexDrive saves off of it years ago and will be mildly sad if I am unable to retrieve them :|

Just a wee bit impractical for large files, and streaming can suck pretty hardcore depending on network circumstances. Then you might be offline, then.. christ, I could go on.

As a backup solution it's nice, for storing everything, fuck that.

Both of these are non-trivial tasks. To address the first:

1. Be careful! Anytime you fuck around with partitions, back your shit up first, because bad things can happen, especially with Partition Magic (the program most people try to use to muck around with already-existing partitions). Since the extra space is not a partition already, though, your job is considerably easier. In XP (dunno if it's the same in 2000) in Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management, resize the drive (after you've converted to NTFS, of course; lemme know if you need help with that).

Alternately, try something a goon mentioned in SH/SC:

"Download the System Rescue CD at http://www.sysresccd.org/

Use QtParted. It supports just about any format you could throw at it.

Free, and none of the OMG MY PARTITIONS DISTAPPEARED from Partition Magic.

vvvv Yep, qtparted does make you boot off a cd. Can't say it's unreliable though... I've resized the NTFS partitions on my Windows machine probably a dozen times with no trouble whatsoever."

2. Networking is the goddamn awful hellhole of computing. Believe me, I should know. :) Hit me on AIM sometime if you need guidance here, because you'll probably need the hands-on help.

Thanks for the tip on QtParted. I will probably check that out later, as I already looked at Disk Management and did not see any options for resizing.

Also agreed re: networking. It's the one aspect of computing I've been unable to acquire a firm grasp on.

I made two burns but was unable to get either to boot. The first I burned as a "bootable CD" under Nero, because I figured that was what I needed. That meant Nero appended its own boot environment to the CD though, which just hanged rather than booting the CD. I tried burning again as a regular data disc, because the rescue CD is supposed to contain its own boot environment. When I tried booting that, my computer apparently decided booting Windows would be a better idea!

Second option was correct. You missed the other part of it, though, where you set your CD drive first in the boot order. :) Look in your BIOS.

No I didn't and no it wasn't :P There's a separate option for burning from an image. I'm sure that'll work.
