The Livejournal effect: update with a brief, meaningless rant, maybe throw in an obtuse comment or two, and half a dozen people respond. Compose a more cheerful post about good times, and it slips under the radar. Not that I'm complaining, mind you - just observing. It seems to me like this place feeds off of negativity sometimes.

Mostly for other reasons, I'm curtailing my internet usage. I doubt any of you will notice a drastic change - the truth is I have wasted such an outrageous quantity of time on the net that I can cut back and still have plenty of time to keep in touch. I'm working on creating a loosely structured schedule for my time in order to make myself more productive and successful. Maybe this is an obvious thing to do, but it's rather new to me.

In the interest of contradicting myself, I ask you: if I were in the market for a new PC or components, what should I look for? What new things should I be aware of?

Everything/Nothing. It's an odd thing to describe, but it usually covers the daily dramas of people's lives. The term comes from the fact such stories seem to be about everything (anything that can happen to people) yet also about nothing (what is personal drama about?). Kind of like Seinfeld, you know?

Or another way I've heard it described: it means everything to the person writing it, and nothing to anyone else :P

You should, though.

I've noticed that hanging out with friends (or even just playing video games) makes me much less jaded from the internet every time I do it. It's not like you even run The Whirlpool anymore - go have fun. :)

There is none better. There's a guide to nicer parts too, if you just happen to be spending a lot. (I'm guessing not.)

You're right about LJ feeding off negativity (at least in my experience). That's why I made the no-bitching-in-my-own-journal rule. I've been more or less faithful to that. :)

Thanks for the link, dude. Do you know if this guide is updated frequently to stay current?

Yeah, it should be. I think it was just updated the other day, in fact (for cheap 64 bit processors). It's usually very current though.

You forgot to consider a third factor: make a post about massive pants shitting and you'll have an LJ goldmine.

What Dave said.

And yeah, this place definitely feeds off of negativity. Because let's face it, people are not that happy a species to begin with, and people who spend tons of time on the computer are going to be much, much worse in this regard. :(

That's why I go back and forth about posting here a lot, and sometimes I go a while without posting. I just end up too bitter and jaded in general if I don't. Someone on SA said that, "Every time you go on the internet, your wit goes up and your social life goes down." I think he's right on the money on that one. :)

I've noticed that my friends list is actually a mirror of my current personal psyche. If my friends are pessimistic, it's my duty to get 'em happy with infectuous optimism and empowerment. Can't let The Man get good people down, after all.

I invested in an $850 Gateway 1.4MHz laptop with a 60GB HD and internal wireless connectivity. I put down $169 on an external 80GB Firedrive and $70 to double the RAM to 1GB. It plays games decent, I can steal my neighbors broadband through osmosis, and it does everything else very nice. I'm not a power user, just a logical minimalist who enjoys his media.

I'm also outta money, got no job, trying to pass some classes, and I'm not gonna be able to pay the bills. Sad.

Good luck!

I'm sorry if I've contributed to the badness in any way, either in what I have done or what I have not done. :/

I hope the world becomes happier eventually, including the internet, but I don't have the answer to that one.

I'm not negative on livejournal all the time. I just vent here, and usually I vent the negative things. I tend to mull over the positive things more by myself than with others. It's harder to convey the positives online... I find it's easier to talk to someone in person about the positives, anyway.
