French slang? [May. 19th, 2013|01:00 pm]

Super-random question, so I apologize in advance, although there is actually a reason for it. Is there a French equivalent to the "gangster/mafia" dialect that exists in English? In which ordinary words have a variety of completely off-the-wall definitions when taken in that context (ex. to clip = to kill, juice = interest on a loan, to pinch = to arrest)? If so, can someone direct me to some sort of glossary/list? If not, thank you anyway!

I have purchased an Ipad and intend to use it next year with my CFY caseload.  I know that the company will provide an "expense" account of sorts to purchase supplies, etc.  Now if I buy apps with this "expense" account for my Ipad, what happens when I leave?  Aren't these apps the property of the company? And what happens if the Ipad is broken or damaged by a client?  thanks.

Живи быстро умри молодым... или? [May. 19th, 2013|12:52 pm]

"Живи быстро, умри молодым" - это высказывание часто ассоциируют с американским актером 50-х годов Джеймсом Дином, который погиб в автокатастрофе в 24 года.

В молодежной среде существует популярное мнение о том, что не надо стареть и возиться со своей и чужой старостью, нужно взять от жизни всё, пока молодой, и уйти в мир иной красивым и на пике.

Откуда это и что теперь?Collapse )

a little more Japanese classroom phrases [May. 19th, 2013|01:42 pm]

Thanks so much for your support and help with the ESL help / phrases! It's very helpful to use. At times there are usually one or two students who clearly have a little more difficulty than others with their English, so knowing the Japanese phrases or writing it on the board in katakana really helps them! =) Then of course I get them all to repeat my English haha.

1.~ I would like to say 'DON"T stand on the table/desk' 'Sit down' but in this context should I use the actual vocabulary word for table, or desk - I guess they are interchangeable in this sense...

Also sit down, is it 'suwatte kudasai' to be polite, and would this include talking about myself, like 'May I sit here' would that be 'Suwatte kudasai' or 'Suwatte onegai shimasu'? OR I think I must use the form of 'te' verb, plus 'mo ii desu ka' - so for ME, do I say 'Watashi wa, koko ni suwatte mo ii desu ka?'

BUT to tell a student 'Don't stand' 'Sit down' would it be the same?

2.~ I want to tell students to make sentences using vocabulary words. I have shown them the word 'sentence' in the dictionary but the process of 'to make a sentence' does not seem to register. What would you recommend to convey this better? Is there a special verb to use, when talking about grammar, and like..' to make ' a sentence, same thing ' to make ' a story?

3.~ How would you ask a student ' Can YOU teach ME? ' sometimes I think it helps their confidence, especially the weaker ones in English, if they show me with their actions for example...how to play a game or do some craft.

Can I say ' Onegai shimasu, oshiete kudasai ' like please tell me or instruct me? Or ' Kore wa, do yatte shimasu? ' ( This thing, how / in what manner do you do it? '

Thanks you all =)

"Europe's Sensational Wild Animal Trainer, Fearless Daughter of Russia's Mad Monk."

I learned about this existence of this wonderful artifact and wonderful kook from Bess Lovejoy's Atlas Obscura talk at DNA Lounge last week, which you should surely attend in the future.

She also later co-authored a cookbook, which includes recipes for jellied fish heads and her father's favorite, cod soup. She also worked as a cabaret dancer in Bucharest, Romania, and then found work as a circus performer for Ringling Brothers Circus. During the 1930s she toured Europe and America as a lion tamer, billing herself as "the daughter of the famous mad monk whose feats in Russia astonished the world." She was mauled by a bear in Peru, Indiana, but stayed with the circus until it reached Miami, Florida, where she quit and began work as a riveter in a defense shipyard during World War II.

Fucking Zynga [May. 18th, 2013|12:39 pm]

Dear Lazyweb, can anyone tell me how to disconnect my Words With Friends account from my Facebook account?

I'm sick to death of it sending me push-notifications that someone I'm friends with on Facebook but have never played Scrabble with has played a word. There seems to be no way to turn this shit off.

Things I have tried:

  1. De-authorizing the Words With Friends app on Facebook. This causes the the iOS app to go into a loop demanding that you re-authorize it.

  2. Deleting and re-installing the iOS app. That stops the auth-loop, but does not stop the "notifications about non-friends" issue, and also makes it nag you daily saying "Hey, you used to log in with Facebook! Log in with Facebook okay??"

So I guess I can't do this myself, since it's stuck in their DB. I'll just mail them and ask them to delete that. Ha ha ha.

  1. This joke appears to be the closest thing to a non-FAQ support page.
  2. So I go to their Facebook page hoping to message them. There's no option to message them. There's no option to post a question on the wall except as a reply to a previous post from them announcing an new feature in a different game. WTF.

  3. So I waste my time trying to strip my complaint down to 140 characters and ask them on Twitter. To the shock of nobody, I get no reply.

  4. Then on a completely different, unlinked web site, I find this page. I get a brush-off auto-reply saying "update to the latest version of the app, which will direct you to the FAQ instead of letting you actually contact us."

The fact that they are still nagging me with updates about my Facebook friends when they no longer have authorization on my Facebook account means that they have stored an offline copy of my friends tree, which I'm pretty sure is against Facebook's application terms of service. I'm sure both parties care about this a lot.

Yeah yeah, that's what I get for dealing with amoral scumbags like Zynga in the first place. I even paid them money to make the ads go away, so I'm part of the problem. But hey, I like playing scrabble on my phone.

Remember when a paying customer could actually email support? Those were the days.

Previously.
