Why don't I ever get along with the people I live with?
My landlord/roommate is on the dole, smokes gass all day, hotboxes his six-year old son.
Okay - I'll let that be. But he didn't take his turn to clean the shit out of the back yard. And he's always trying to find ways to bill me for this or that - like I didn't do a good enough job cleaning the bathroom.
He's outright said that he's keeping my damage deposit.
Furthermore, I'm the only one who cleans the bathroom when he said it would be done three times a week when I moved in.
And now he's claiming that he'll get rid of my dog! I moved in to this house so I could keep my dog in the backyard.
Worst of all, I think he's been stealin money form my change box. When I bring up the allegation that he's a thief, he sits real still.
My room has a lock on it and he's the only one with a key.
What should I do? He's offered me the option of leaving and renting the room out to whoever.
But I wouldn't mind fighting it out with him. But he's on home turf so I'd never win.
And another thing. He wants me to make myself scarce this week so he can do some business deals.
I think I should move out and let the cops deal with him. But how do I recover my prepaid lease?
I feel like burning his house down or kciking his as, but I won't because I'm not that kind of person.
But there definitely has to be solution.
If only I could get him busted. But I'd lose my money, and the kids would lose their Daddy. |

Don't pay him another dime, don't listen to a word he says. He can't evict you. Don't make yourself scarce. If he does anything to your dog, call the cops.
Change the lock on your door when he's not in the apartment. If he breaks into your room, call the cops. (Deleted comment)

anyway..you have the protection of the law (police and landlord tenants board) if you so choose to use them
if you have any questions about the landlord/tenants act, drop me a line as I have become very familiar with it over the years.
do not move, not even if you have someone to sublet too. what could happen is if you have problems getting them to pay you, you are screwed. you could threaten your landlord that this is what you are going to do but let him think that the person you are going to move in is some kinda animal. give him a dose of his own medicine.
do not leave unless you have all your money back either in cash or your own cheques returned uncashed. do not accept a cheque from him
do not allow him to keep your damage deposit. landlords try this all the time. they are not entitled to it. start taking pictures now so you have evidence.
the landlord/tenants board usually finds on the side of the tenant. if you have unresolved issues you can probably pay your rent to them and they can legally withhold it from him if until things are resolved.
yeah and the other suggestion from someone about changing your lock. this is a great idea. btw, silly vancouver chickie here....what the hell is hotboxing ? is that like sharing a bed?
hot boxing is when you go into a small space (or anywhere if you smoke enough weed) and fill the room with the smoke... Bathrooms are a usual place.
but, Ben, just so you know... my sister and brother in law have a big rotty/boxer and they thought it would be difficult to find a place to rent. Turns out anywhere they went, they offered a bit of extra money a month and no one turned it down. People are pretty willing to make allowances for some extra cash.
It sounds like a pretty frustrating situation. Hope it gets resolved!

Honestly, and this is just going on what I've seen, I don't know how good of a father he actually is, but if he hot boxes his six year old son maybe its better for these kids to lose their daddy. Or more so, maybe he deserves to lose his kids if hes going to act like that. | |
