GameSetLinks: Atlus Brings Us... Ice Cream? [26 Jul 2008|12:00am]
gamesetwatch

- The hive mind must bring you GameSetLinks, and it does so this time by revealing that Persona developer Atlus has also debuted an awesome new IP - that's right, it's a refrigerated UFO machine that dispenses ice cream (pictured, left!) Take that, Megaten fans!

Also wandering around here - lots of free games listed, why user-created may not always be the best, more Harmonix analysis, comparisons of console download services, and a little journalist mugging.

We Welcome Our New Masters, The Brotherhood Of Steel [Fallout 3] [25 Jul 2008|11:30pm]
kotakufeed

That's a pic taken deep in the bowels of Bethesda HQ. As you can see, that there is a fairly sizeable lineup of the Brotherhood of Steel. All of them shiny, all of them rather imposing. So this is for Comic-Con, right? They're cute little figures, or premium statues, or realistically-modelled bobbleheads, yes? No. They're a little, uh, bigger.

OK, not rather imposing, very imposing.

The Inevitable "Vader & Yoda As SCIV DLC" Rumor [Update] [Rumor] [25 Jul 2008|08:20pm]
kotakufeed

Above, a pic that supposedly proves that, via the wonders of DLC, you will indeed be able to play as both Vader and Yoda in Soul Calibur IV, regardless of which version of the game you buy. It's certainly far from conclusive proof, in that all it proves is that Yoda is on the left of a digital image while Vader's on the right, but far crazier, far less likely rumours have turned out to be true than this one.

Update - Perhaps sensing the internet's trepidation, the source of the pics - GamersReports - have thrown a video clip up on YouTube, showing Yoda and Vader going at it. You can see it after the jump. Still not proof, but those who would like it to be should get a kick out of it.

Well, What Did You Think of E3? [Tell Us Dammit] [25 Jul 2008|11:00pm]
kotakufeed

It's Friday. You know, Friday. That means one thing: Pull up a chair, grab a cold drink, let's talk. So yes, here it is, TELL US DAMMIT. And here's how it works: We ask a question, you answer it. Simple and no strings attached! This isn't some marketing survey or whatever. It's an emotional investment in you. Yes, we're interested in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know fucktons about us — more than you even want to, we're sure. But, hey, we'd like to know about you. That way you won't be some faceless blob — and we might feel a tinge of guilt when we ban your ass. Or not, because really we're incapable of human emotion. We think.

Just got back from E3. Well, no. I got back a few days ago, but I just recovered. And well, I'd like to know...

Question: What did you think of this year's E3?

WipEout HD Delayed So They Can Add Loads Of New Stuff [Wipeout Hd] [25 Jul 2008|10:40pm]
kotakufeed

As you can tell by the fact you still can’t buy it, WipEout HD has been delayed. Rumours suggest the reason for the hold-up could be epilepsy tests, it could be glitchy online play, it could be anything and everything in between. But what do Sony have to say about the whole thing? They’ve got a very sensible answer:

The reason for the delay of WipEout HD on PS3 has been due to the many improvements we have been making and the numerous features we've added to the game. These include: 8 reverse tracks, 4 extra ships, 2 alternative HUDS, 2 Player offline split screen and XMB Trophy support. We look forward to sharing WipEout HD with you very soon.

Regarding the speculation about health issues, we can assure you that we take consumer safety very seriously and monitor it very carefully.

That last line doesn’t entirely rule out the epilepsy stuff, but that first paragraph is making the wait sound worth it regardless.

Gundam Is Moving PSPs In Japan, DQV and DSs Not So Much [Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart] [25 Jul 2008|10:20pm]
kotakufeed

This week's Media Create hardware numbers have a couple of minor surprises, with the PSP getting a considerable sales boost from the release of Gundam Battle Universe. Also interesting is the surprisingly small bump the DS got, as Dragon Quest V moved loads of software, but little hardware.

We're also taken aback by the higher than normal Xbox 360 sales. That's without a single game in the top fifty. We're going to go lie down now. This has been an emotional roller coaster!

  • PSP - 74,024
  • Nintendo DS - 54,531
  • Wii - 40,803

True, true. Though I still think neither idea has enough merit to follow through on, the very concept of Sonic turning into a big, tough monster is aneurysm inducing. I believe the meeting must have gone something like this:

Guy 1: I've got it. Let's have Sonic turn into a werewolf. No, fuck that. A "werehog"! Haha, God damn I'm a genius.

Guy 2: ...But, why would he turn into a werewolf?</br>

Guy 1: Werehog.

Guy 2: Uh, right. Werehog. I mean, Sonic's never had that power, not in the games, any of the animated series... Really, the closest thing is when he turns into Super Sonic.

Guy 1: Super Sonic is old news, man. I'll tell you what the fans want - GRITTY! You know how many times I heard that word in the past month alone? Everybody is making gritty games. In fact, I think we should make the game entirely shades of brown and grey!

Guy 2: You didn't answer my question, though. How are we supposed to explain why Sonic suddenly turns into a werehog?

Guy 1: What the fuck do I care? I dunno, make Dr. Robotnik use the Chaos Emeralds to curse him or something.

Guy 2: But the Chaos Emeralds never -

Guy 1: GRITTY!"

Sony UK Boss Says E3 Was Like A Plumber's Convention [E3] [25 Jul 2008|09:40pm]
kotakufeed

More E3 navel-gazing! Can you stand any more? Do try, because this has got to be the last one. Asked for his thoughts on the validity of E3's "new" format, SCE UK's Ray Maguire said:

I think we felt that E3 suffered by not having that grandeur and the theatrical shows that demonstrate this is a business that generates billions of Euros. It was more like a convention for plumbers. But behind closed doors, there was a decent amount of business going on.

If that's a comment on the amount of visible ass-crack on show, Ray, I can assure you, it's all the rage with the kids these days.

Could have sworn this was discounted when it first popped up a few weeks back, but it's popped back up again today, so what the hell. You may see, or may already have seen, images of the cover of the latest issue of PC Gamer Malaysia. Purporting to confirm that GTA IV is on its way to the PC. Well it's not, at least, it's not yet, with the magazine's editor admitting the cover's headline is his own conjecture. Rockstar have also chimed in, denying any announcement on a PC version has been made.

Fracture Shows Off Pacifican Rhino, Assault Vehicle [Weapons And Vehicles] [25 Jul 2008|08:00pm]
kotakufeed

The community Fracture site updated today with details on a new weapon and a new vehicle.

The Pacifican Rhino gun is a rifle that shoots living boulder's at people. These boulders can track lifeforms and chase them around, until the boulder either flattens them or explodes. Sounds like a barrel of fun.

Next up, the terrain deforming TDV-1 Assault Vehicle.

Atlantic Alliance TDV-1
Description: Brute strength meets terrain-deformation technology in the Atlantic Alliance TDV-1, perhaps the pinnacle of melding modern science with good old fashioned brute strength. While the majority of research into terrain-deformation has focused on weapons and the invaluable Entrencher, soldiers in the field were quickly faced with a dilemma. While the Entrencher and TD-related weaponry was useful in altering the terrain for a single person, altering the terrain on a large-scale proved to be too time consuming and left troops vulnerable to enemy attacks.

The solution was the TDV-1 vehicle. While a fully capable battle-ready vehicle with highly armored plating offering exceptional protection capability, the TDV-1 proved invaluable thanks to a number of key terrain-deformation modifications. Early attempts at outfitting the vehicle with an array of TD nodes running under the frame of the vehicle proved to be disastrous, resulting in the vehicle being literally swallowed up by the ground. The node array also proved problematic for raising the terrain, resulting in what came to be known as “TD take-offs,” with test vehicles being hurled up to 40 feet into the air.

Scientists soon discovered, however, that in order to get the TDV-1 up and running they would need to try a different approach and separate raising and lowering terrain into two different mechanisms. To solve the problem of lowering the terrain, scientists outfitted the TDV-1 with special grinder attachments that when powered, could tear through the ground and effectively lower the terrain in an area equal in size to the vehicle. To keep power consumption to a minimum, researchers employed return kinetic energy cells that were able to siphon the tremendous force of the deformation back into the vehicle, lowering its power needs substantially.

To raise terrain, scientists employed a more explosive approach and looked to their highly effective Torpedo weapon for inspiration.

Use:While the Torpedo was designed to shoot a subterranean missile that could be detonated at will, the terrain raising component on the TDV-1 utilized a non-lethal charge that, while also fired beneath the ground, could effectively raise the terrain once detonated. This raised terrain proved strong enough to support the entire weight of the TDV-1, including a driver, making it an ideal solution for ramp building. This feature has proven extremely valuable in the field, allowing the TDV-1 access to uneven terrain and other dangerous environments with little to no risk to the vehicle occupants.

While the TDV-1 is a rare find on the battlefield and has yet to see large scale deployment, early reports have shown that the vehicle will soon be an invaluable tool in the Atlantic Alliance campaign against the Pacifican states.

i can't help but think about things. then i can vomit all of those thoughts up. in fact it can get to be a torrent -- there is more text than i know what to do with.

this is what made me an effective online games journalist. when i am doing something, like playing a game, i cannot help but have thoughts, insights, conundrums, questions. i try to figure out the whats and whys. then i throw them down into a forum like this, and in the process of doing that i come up with something that's worth a bit of your time, if you're interested. typically.

the problem is that these predilections are just frustrating when i'm feeling restless, when there's not an assignment, when there's not something to push toward. i feel full of energy but without focus.

on a positive note, i did laundry today: all of it. well, almost. i need to wash my blanket, but i also need it for sleeping, so i'll try to do that tomorrow.

what i'm trying to say is: i wrote like two drafts of this crazy fucking screed about JRPGs, but i don't see any reason to go through with it, so now i'm sitting here frustrated and confused. i even wrote an email on the same topic (that was the genesis -- i got that done, if not to my satisfaction.) i think there's something to write, though. maybe i should just be taking notes and throwing everything at the wall; i can see what sticks later.

yeah.

see, this is how i think: on paper.

so one of the things i did this evening was watch a lot of tivo'd television. this is a photo of a 1994 episode of roseanne. check out the NES front and center!

it's on the coffee table of a bachelor pad apartment (a one-episode set, as far as i can infer, story-wise.) i would assume in 1994, dude would have had an SNES or a genesis given the state of his TV and stereo (this was a plot point) but it was amusing to see all the same -- particularly hooked up via composite. Realtime Worlds Expects M Rating For APB [APB] [25 Jul 2008|08:40pm]

After Realtime Worlds' appetite-whetting unveiling of its upcoming cops-n'-jerkbags MMO APB (All Points Bulletin), it'd be a little disappointing if it turned out that all we were being promised was sanitized "comic mischief." But no — Realtime Worlds fully expects to earn its M rating.

Realtime Worlds president Tony Harman (who recently told us why we didn't see APB at E3) had a chat with Gamespot:

Realtime Worlds president Tony Harmon told GameSpot today that he's expecting his modern-day cops-and-robbers game APB to land an M from the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Though the game has no release date yet, the developer is planning to submit it to the ratings process next year.
