Katamari Damacy is like a day you spend at home sick from elementary school. You know the feeling -- that mucusey smell in your nose, the lightheaded, loopy sensation brought on by mom's overdosage of Children's Dimetapp, the weird way the sunlight filters through the blinds and forms patterns on the carpet that you never see since you're always at school at this time in the morning. It's all very surreal and alien, yet somehow also very familiar and comfortable.
I didn't think much of Katamari at first; I was left feeling pretty disappointed, actually. I played it for about half an hour, got stuck on Make A Star 4, then turned it off wondering why the hell everyone's hyping it so much.
That's the thing, though; Katamari doesn't win you over right away. It happens gradually, so slowly you barely even notice. Play it enough and you'll eventually find a rewarding, fulfilling experience that remains fun even when you're playing it with no particular goal in mind. Much like how as a kid you'd play a game -- like say, Megaman 2 -- over and over to completion for no particular reason other than that it was fun and you liked it, you'll find yourself endlessly replaying Katamari for the exact same reasons.
The right reasons.
I like this game lots. You should get it. I bought the last copy Best Buy had though so I guess you're out of luck.
