Seriously. WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WORLD.

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."

The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.

No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.

Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

I've been saying this for a while now. If we think civil rights is something fought for on our behalf by other people--that this battle is over and done and we never have to worry about it again, well, we might as well kiss our rights goodbye. Centuries of women being viewed as property doesn't just disappear out of the collective mindset overnight. And if you don't think that the civil rights of other groups of people, such as gays and lesbians seeking the right to marriage, can't ever affect you personally, think again. We've got politicians in this country that are targeting single mothers and gay/lesbian couples as the single-most threat to the family--calling both sets of people 'abusive' to their children.

How's that for a wake up call?

I don't normally post much in the way of politics here. My fandom journal is my fun place. But I'm frequently horrified and appalled at how many of my co-workers and acquaintances have never heard of SOPA, or the Personhood Act, or the Blunt Amendment. Laws are being passed that a good many of my fellow citizens have never heard of--so I say again, civil rights are something you lose because you weren't paying attention. Civil rights for ALL, regardless of race, creed, color, sexual orientation, or gender. Because what affects one group denied basic rights has implications for everyone else.

And if you want another (more humorous) look at the situation, (and I believe fighting with all weapons--humor is a particularly devastating one), I recommend this entry from tangotabby

The vid below, however, is utterly BRILLIANT. I can't stop watching it. :-)

When they marched for the women's right to vote 100 years ago, they were imprisoned, put into strait-jackets and force fed until they vomited blood. They fought for your right to own property, to have access to birth control and your right to an education. This video is fun and clever and hits on some hard truths. And it makes you ask yourself...what I am willing to do today to fight back and protect our rights as women and citizens?

a meme from onlyechoes:

Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

• christmas was, as usual, amazing! it was quite, quite lovely, also present-wise! got a bunch of games, final fantasy xiii included (finally!), and i've been playing it whenever i've had the chance. ILYSFM LIGHTNING! (also growing tired of snow's cheesy lines and the endless falling-to-his-knees thing, but still.) aaaaand got some movies, some dvd boxes (fringe! haven! sanctuary! \o/), candy, a bunch of books, some tea stuff, and some other stuff i'm too lazy to mention. but awesomecakes! sadly enough, the food was eaten some days ago now. seriously, i could eat christmas food for weeks. om nom. hope the rest of you had awesome holidays of your choice!

• met an old friend a few days ago, just randomly bumped into her in the grocery store. it's just ... weird, i guess. we were best friends for like seven years when we were kids, and then we just sort of ... grew apart. and we still got on - we still do, i guess - but i hadn't actually seen (or been in any sort of contact with) her in some years, and after all the how are yous and so what are you doing these days it just got a bit awkward. like, we didn't really know what to say to each other, and idk. it was nice seeing her, but it was weird to be so awkard with her, because we used to be so close. idk.

• HAHA TOTALLY FAILED WITH SCRAPBOOK AGAIN. i mean, i'll still fill it up with what i can remember, but oh man, i'm so behind. HERE'S TO HOPING NEXT YEAR WILL GO BETTER.

anyway, on to nicer (read: fandom) things!

• rewatched sherlock, because the wait for season two is killing me. how will i be able to wait an entire week after the first episode airs? and another week after that? and then who knows how long it'll take them to make a third season. BUT TOMORROW. OR DAY AFTER TOMORROW FOR ME BUT STILL OASLK;ALKJFDL MOFFAAAAAAAAAAT.

• DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO DOCTOR WHO OH JESUS THAT CHRISTMAS SPECIAL FINALLY GOT AROUND TO SEEING IT OALSKJF;ALKJFLDJFDL MY GOD, OH MY HEART. JUST. THE DOCTOR. AND THE PONDS! AND BILL BAILEY, HEE! BUT BUT BUT "BECAUSE THEY ARE GOING TO BE SAD LATER."

"BECAUSE THEY ARE GOING TO BE SAD LATER."

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

SEASON SEVEN WILL FUCKING KILL ME, OKAY. BECAUSE AS WONDERFUL AS THAT ENDING WAS, IT MAKES THE INEVITABLE POND-FAREWELL ALL THE SADDER, AND I JUST, I CAN'T I CAN'T. BRB, SOBBING MY EYES OUT NOW KTHNXBAI.

also karen gillan WHY SO GORGEOUS AUGH.

• also er annabean darlingest YOURLETTERISSOLATEIKNOWI'MASSORRYASSORRYCANBE. PLEASE FORGIVE MEEEEE. but it'll come sometime next week! i promise! er, i hope! anyway, terribly sorry about not writing in, er, two or three months. SO SORRY. LET ME GLOMP YOU INSTEAD. ♥
