Hi all,

I've been keeping my eye on this site ever since I heard that Cave Story was being developed for the DS.  However, I have been able to find no news recently on the status of the conversion.  I finally tired of just lurking and joined LJ just to ask: Does anybody here know anything?  I've been putting off my next playthrough for this conversion; over a year, at this point!  (*_*)

Thanks!

も and と after final items in lists, in conjunction with other particles [Aug. 29th, 2008|02:43 pm]

japanese

[tsukikage85]
So, I was reading the Wiki article on kanbun, and they gave 「楚人に盾と矛とを鬻ぐ者有り」 as an example of "a well-formed Japanese sentence". However, that second と clashes with my current understanding of the uses of the particle. I always thought that, unlike も, と should not be used after the last item in a list. And I thought that, even with も, it would not be used next to another particle, or if it was it would come after the other particle (i.e., にも), and that the other particle would need to be used in all locations of the も. Although I think も would straight-out replace を. Anyways, I've babbled on enough for you guys to get my drift. Can you help me clear up any misunderstandings I'm having?

こんにちは、みなさん、

I made an account on ameba a while ago, but have never posted anything, and I'm looking to start maybe regularly posting, to help me with my japanese studies. So, just for the heck of it I was wondering if anyone else uses ameba for their japanese blogging and if you want to friend up, and maybe help out eachother, etc.

If so, here's a link to my page profile.ameba.jp/ylime/, I don't have any blogs yet but hopefully will be posting up soon.

i'm looking to iron out the kinks in my japanese so i'll have a go at posing my question without using english.

ブログなどに面白いこととかあったら、英語で「lol」を使いますね
このために「笑」を使う状態も「w」を使う状態もあると気づきました
問題は、どんな時にどっちが1番自然に使えるでしょうか?

何か変なことを書いたとしたら、たしかに教えてください
日本語で答えを出しても平気です♥

Final Battle Piano - Rough Draft [Aug. 28th, 2008|10:00 pm]

[markarian]
Okay, I'm learning a new one. Final Battle is a very demanding piece, but it's so powerful that I had to give it a shot. This is my first draft after recently having learned this piece. I'm kind of embarrassed to post it >.< , but I always welcome constructive criticism and tips. Thanks so much again for watching :-)

Another SkullgirlS pin-up. This time its Wendy, an npc character.

She was supposed to appear as an npc on the initial demo for the Anna Killer restaurant stage but it never came to fruition.

As of now we're still undecided whether she'll be making an appearance later in-game.

Process )

How would you say "End Homelessness" in Nihongo? I'm guessing 家がないじょうたいを終わって is wrong or lacks a certain punch.

Thank you in advance.

OH LOOK A FANMIX [Aug. 27th, 2008|11:26 pm]

[slothfulsamoyed]
Medium: Game
Fandom: Cave Story
Subject: Instrumental Quote/Curly mix.
Title: Iron Bond
Warnings: Bizarre, fake technobabble descriptions.
Notes: Mostly done to see if I could do a no-lyrics mix. 8] This isn't exactly a pairing-centric mix (although it was supposed to be). But it's a fanmix for the good end (everyone's alive, Ballos is beaten, Balrog is free, etc). A song for every really important event that Curly and Quote go through together, following the plotline. A lot of this is moive or game soundtrack music, and when that's the case I've listed the original source in small text. Two tracks for head-canon that would only ever happen if I got off my ass and wrote continuation fic, pffft like that'll happen. Anyways, enjoy! 8D

A Japanese student arrived at our school this year~ [Aug. 27th, 2008|08:00 pm]

[mood | cheerful]

His name is Taiki :DHe doesn't speak much English, but I can still talk to him enough with the Japanese I know, and the English he knows.
I want to ask him more about his situation though, as I'm not sure if he is staying here permanently.
Could someone translate a few questions for me to help with conversation?

- How do you like it here so far?
- Have you met a lot of new friends?
- Are you an exchange student?
- Are you staying here permanently?
- How long are you staying?

And also I'm having my sweet sixteen this year, and I'm pretty sure he'll still be here even if he's not staying permanently by then.. so I want to invite him.

- I'm having my sixteenth birthday party in October. Would you like to come?

Thanks very much in advance! :]<3

translation [Aug. 26th, 2008|01:47 pm]

japanese

[stolen_hybris]
How would you translate the title of this book?

『漫画同人誌エトセトラ ’82~’98 状況論とレビューで読むおたく史』

"Manga Doujinshi etcetera '82-'98 The History Of Otaku As Read in XXX And Reviews" is what I have.
I have especially a problem with 状況論, the only translation I found for that is "situated perspective" but that doesn't seem right here...

Thanks a lot!

Hi!
I would like to ask what´s the difference between those three:
起原 -> きげん origin; beginning; rise

基源 -> きげん origin

来由 -> らいゆ origin; cause

I want this for the manga title I currently started to draw and I´m not sure which one to use... or which is more appropriate.

If needed description of the story *blush* basicaly it´s about origin of mythology and humanity and the cause of their fall mixed with ecology, relationship between two main characters and alot of blood.

I looked up Jisho for these ^^ , typed "origin" in the search and those are most near ( I think they are) to what I wanted...
I started to learn kanji not long ago so i´m not sure if they differ with meanings when used in sentences etc.

Thank you very much for your help!

what exactly does 高嶺草 mean in the sentence "誇りという名の高嶺草" ?
For reference the whole line is 誇りという名の高嶺草 己の胸に咲かせよう and the song is basically about national pride and that kind of thing.
thanks in advance!

Additional JLPT Questions - Names & Grammar [Aug. 25th, 2008|05:23 pm]

japanese

[saymark2]
Hi.

Thanks everyone for your previous help.

Looking over some past tests, I noticed some things, and have questions.

1. Although knowledge of name kanji (jinmeiyou) kanji for words is needed, do you not need how to read Japanese names for the test? I haven't come across any questions like "pick the correct reading of this name", assuming because the same name kanji compounds can be read various ways?

2. For the grammar section, is it not neccesary to use the grammar pattern correctly, just to IDENTIFY IT? For example (super easy), if the question is "kare wa gakusei ____ desu", the possible answers will NOT BE

a. no you
b. ni you
c. de you
d. wa you

Am I correct in these two observations? Thanks!

Opinion [Aug. 25th, 2008|03:53 am]

I was wondering just a bit ago, how would you, in Japanese make a sentence be "in my opinion, . . .". I was thinking maybe using 「と思う」 for it but I don't know if that really qualifies correctly if you're trying to say something is whatever 'in my opinion'.

Everyday life vocabulary [Aug. 25th, 2008|08:16 am]

japanese

[mood | bouncy]

In about 2 weeks we'll host a Japanese girl for about two weeks and while looking around me, wondering to explain how our household works, I'm becoming aware that during the whole year at university, I never caught a glimpse on many, many "everyday-words". Washing machine, anyone? Sink? Paravent? It goes on and on...
Is there any nice site with a list -or maybe you have one personal you'd like to share- that reviews [Western/European]day-to-day vocabulary? I might be going through the effort to put sticky notes with the Japanese and French name on everything - for myself and our visitor.
