Anyone else planning to go to see AC/DC in March next year?

I'm going, but I'd rather not be there all on my lonesome.

So I was out on the weekend talking to a mate saying "I went to Leonard Cohen last weekend and it was amazing." And do you know how he replied?
"Leonard Cohen? Where's that?"

Leonard Cohen: not a town in Northern Queensland!

Things at the moment can be nicely categorised into Phizz, fun, work, and athletics.

Phizz is back. I collected her from the airport dazed and jet lagged and disorientated. I felt a cloud lift that had been over my heart since I walked away from her in Bangkok airport back in August. I'd become so used to that cloud that when it moved away the light it let in was blinding for a moment. She's the same girl that left, only better, stronger, braver, wiser and with so many stories to tell you!

Zorro sulked and ignored her for a couple of days and then had his own little kitten-light bulb moment and is now all over her. Literally all over her, you should see her nice clean clothes covered in white cat hair now, he made making her his again his top priority.

The night of Phizz's return I abandoned her so that I could take my Mum to see Leonard Cohen playing Sandleford winery. I'd gotten us both tickets for her 60th birthday and couldn't very well reschedule either the show, or the flight, so I was a terrible boyfriend and left Phizz alone while I was romanced and moved by the incomparable Cohen. Everything you've read about his live shows is true, the man is masterful.
Still to come we have tickets for the whole 8 hours of The War of the Roses, Amanda Palmer, and a month and a half later Tim Minchin. I'm sure there will be much MUCH more to come but it's early days yet. I'm hanging out for the ACDC world tour :)

Work is intense, the last 10 years under the Libs has left us with our collective arses hanging out all over the place and without any real capacity to respond to the rising unemployment, floods in Northern Queensland, and the fires in Victoria. As it is we've managed pretty damn well but you can imagine it's a pretty busy time to be working as a trainer of new and existing staff. I've also picked up a nice little side gig this week preparing a briefing for local community groups on the way Centrelink customers will be effected by the upcoming removal of same-sex discrimination in Federal Law.

Besides gloating messages from Canberra in December I haven't mentioned athletics much recently. I'm taking 5 training sessions every week, plus being present for the Senior competition every weekend. Monday is race pace work for the distance athletes and top speed work for the sprinters. Tuesday is a sprint session, focusing on technique either form runs or block starts. Wednesday is a set of sprints up a 150m sand hill near the beach. Thursday is my day off and gives me a chance to get home before 8pm and maybe do some grocery shopping. Friday is Aerobic Capacity work for the distance guys and speed endurance for the sprinters. Saturday Morning is Hurdles and Steeplechase technique work, with a competition on either Saturday arvo or Sunday morning. Rinse. Repeat. We're doing very well at the moment, the crew who all went to Nationals at the end of last year are starting to refocus towards the State Champs in mid March, and the ones who didn't have stayed fired up and are qualifying for this December's Nationals in droves. For the first time in years I'm going to be disappointed when the end of the season comes and we go back to Winter/Cross Country training.

It's half past midnight, and you're up to date :)

Hopetoun, a misnomer if ever there was one, is a place that I will happily put down on the list of "Experiences that Dave's glad he's had but doesn't want to repeat. Ever."

The time down here so far has been marked by a complete failure for State and Commonwealth Government to communicate. We are the first on the gound, however we can't do anything besides give very general information as we're simply one small part of the travelling carnival show that is the State Government's response. Having commandeered the local primary school, because clearly the teachers there don't need time to prepare for the first term starting in 4 days, we're now twiddling our thumbs as we wait for the powers-that-be to arrive. I shouldn't really complain, I'm being paid very well for doing this trip, but I honestly feel that I could be better employed elsewhere. Like *in* Ravensthorpe for example.

I'm pretty much uncontactable down here, my accommodation has exactly zero internets (wireless or otherwise), my mobile is reduced to an overpriced paperweight/alarm clock because Optus doesn't provide any coverage here, and it's too windy and gross for any carrier pigeons to make it down safely.

Still due back in Perth on Friday evening with enough time to get changed, jump in the car and go to Alice and Malcolm's for roast venison and a couple of top end 2005 Glaetzer wines.

Mad props to Hippy for agreeing to look after Zorro for me while I'm away, I owe you a bunch hon :)

Security:Public

I will not be spending the evening of Chinese New Year in a roof top garden on Adelaide Terrace, drinking free champagne and eating free food and watching the Invasion Day fireworks go off over the river and city.

Instead I will be in a light aircraft flying down to Esperance where I will stay the night before driving to Hopetoun in the morning. There I will spend Tuesday and Wednesday running information seminars for local towns folk, miners, and other contractors effected by BHP's closure of the Ravensthorpe Nickle Mine.

Never let it be said that my work isn't glamourous!

I've got another one! Two years after Eoghan won National Gold in the U/14 800m Tim claimed the U/15 800m title. In windy conditions it wasn't a great time or even a PB (he ran that in his heat) but it was a gutsy run that saw him lead from start to finish and hold off his good mate and fellow WA runner Lional. Sadly I can't claim the double, but we did get the medal that mattered :)

Last night we celebrated the Greatest European Holiday in the World (Tribute) by tracing the path that Phizz took in getting to London. Starting in Australia Greg, Angel and I drank beer from every country that she visited in the order of visitation, to pad out the booze we also ate cheese from France and The Netherlands, Spanish Jamon, white bean dip made from Italian beans, and cooked sausages from England, Germany and Spain.

We were ably supported by M@, Trav and Dahna, and crossed live to London where Phizz was forced to deal with 6 drunk Australians singing happy birthday at her before she'd even had time to drink her first coffee of the morning.

After last weekend there's really not much more left to say.

Happy birthday baby, I love you and I miss you.

I'm bustling around the kitchen making vegan white bean dip for Dahna, and making sure that I've got enough clean glasses of a wide enough range of shapes and sizes to accommodate all Greg's beers, channelling Iron Chef Shirt Head as I dance about to Roxette. Our friends will be here soon and we'll drink to your health before harnessing the technologies to sing you happy birthday!

Ships and kittens.

6 years ago as we danced and laughed you gave me something very precious. When my clumsy man hands held it too tightly, too desperately, you showed me how to cup it gently so that I could hold it without hurting. When I struggled to find words to describe what was happening you explained to me that words were sometimes not necessary.

I've always needed words though, in the naming and describing I find a comfort and a reality; but for you today the words I speak every day are too structured to name the feelings in my heart. Instead I want to give you the words of the first song I ever learned, the song that my Mother sang to me so that I would know who I was and that I was loved.

Pokarekare ana, nga wai o Waiapu
Whiti atu koe hine, marino ana e.

E hine e, hoki mai ra, ka mate ahau i te aroha e.

Tuhituhi taku reta, tuku atu taku riingi
Kia kite to iwi, raruraru ana e.

E hine e, hoki mai ra, ka mate ahau i te aroha e.

Whatiwhati taku pene, kua pau aku pepa
Ko taku aroha, mau tonu ana e.

E hine e, hoki mai ra, ka mate ahau i te aroha e.

I love you Phiz, I'd sail ships for you.

More funds have come through and we're up to $180.

Thankyou so much for your generosity :)

At this stage it looks like the best way for her to access this money is to use my Debit Card details for an online purchase, which is directly linked to my account.

By the way, I'm checking my account as often as I can (though not while I'm at work) and I promise I'll email you back to confirm as soon as I see that your transfer has come through.

Remember, we're talking about the girl who gave me this for my birthday a couple of years ago. Enough said really!

Mood: optimistic

As you may have noticed we're all currently bereft of a very wonderful Phizz at the moment. Sadly a lack of access to a computer is only compounding this isolation. I know it's not her birthday yet for a few weeks but I can't see any point in making her wait for ages to get her hands on a machine that will help her keep in touch with us all. It is, after all, the future!

So I propose that we pool our resources together, combining what money we might have spent on her if she'd been here in Perth, to help her purchase a lap top in London. I don't know how much one is likely to cost, and I'm only too aware of how little the Australian Peso is worth at the moment. None of that matters because it's Phizz. And without our help she's going to be left making do with little scraps of internet time here and there that she's able to sneak from her employers.

To avoid the money being eaten up in transfer fees, I suggest that we pool our resources and sent her the money in one go. I'm pretty dumb with this sort of thing, and I freely admit that I'm making this up as I go along. At the moment the best I can suggest is that you email me, I'll give you my bank details, and you can transfer money into my account as much or as little as you can afford, in the transfer detail/notes/thingumy enter "Phizbub" to make sure that I see it's for her and don't spend it on hookers and blow. If you've got more experience with this sort of thing than me, don't just sit there smiling smugly, share the knowledge so that we can all share the love.

The sooner we can get this organised the better, so I'm going to send off what ever we've been able to raise on Friday 17 October.

Go Team!!!

****Edt****
Holy crap, $80 over night! I can't be sure who the two of you are, though obviously I have a pretty good idea of who you MIGHT be. Keep up the good work :)
