Memory meme.
Songs, what they mean to you. Etc!

Song - Artist - Album

1. No God- The Germs- MIA (The Complete Anthology)
Reminds me of last semester because that's when I first really got into the Germs. Reminds me of Liz who appreciates the name Lorna Doom as much as I do and went so far as to name her mp3 player that.

2. Mandy Goes to Med School- The Dresden Dolls- Yes, Virginia...
Reminds me of Liz and of Katie. Slightly more of Katie because the first version I heard of this song was a live rendition she sent me once. I wish I still had it...

3. Angel- Aerosmith- Permanent Vacation
Ohhh late middle school. Kelly's favorite song because it is the QUINTESSENTIAL eighties power-ballad. Carolyn and I and our Aerosmith obsession days. The only fun bits of middle school, really.

4. I Love You- Sarah McLachlan- Surfacing
Dating Joe in sophomore year. He had a MAJOR Sarah McLachlan thing going on at the time and this song always made me think of him.

5. Happy Working Song- Amy Adams- Enchanted
AHAHAHA. This past winter break. Hanging with Cory, Corey, Brendan, Lauren and Mark at the mall. Then Tanya sending me the movie and soundtrack when I was in a crappy mood 'cause she's awesome. Then watching it with Izzy and showing Ali for the first time. Yelling at Idina's bangs walking back from the cinema with Carolyn.

6. Dreaming My Dreams- The Cranberries- No Need to Argue
Long car trips to Canada with my family between the ages of birth and twelve. We had four tapes we always played: No Need to Argue, Everybody Else Is Doing it so Why Can't We, The Joshua Tree, and Dummy.

7. New York- The Sex Pistols- Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
Coming to NYC with my LC for the pointless historical tour. "You better keep your mouth shut, you better keep your mouth shut"

8. Alison's Starting to Happen- The Lemonheads- It's a Shame about Ray
Ali. It tends to be the general reaction. Everyone falls for her in one way or another, as a friend or as more. It's just who she is. Though that last bit is unlikely ("Alison's getting her tit pierced, Alison's growing a mohawk").

9. Judy is a Punk- The Ramones- One of the two best-of albums I have
Liz. This was my first Ramones song and she sent it to me, along with Beat on the Brat and I Wanna Be Sedated.

10. Roosevelt Petrucius Coleslaw- Anika Noni Rose, Tonya Pinkins- Caroline, or Change
High school. Ranting and raving about surrealism and Tony Kushner and enjoying really strange really depressing shows. David Miller going "Evenin' Caroliiine" every time he saw Caroline from our LC.

11. Come to my Garden/Lift Me Up- Rebecca Luker, John Babcock- The Secret Garden
Last summer. Secret Garden with Cory and Paigebrother doing it. Freaking out with Paige in a joyous way when Michael did it on pich and in key.

12. Lullabye- The Dixie Chicks- Taking the Long Way
Also last summer. Joe gave me the CD and it was glorious. Such a comforting song. "How long do you wanna be loved?...Is forever enough, 'cause I'm never ever giving you up"

13. The Rain in Spain- Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison- My Fair Lady
Leslie because she loves it so. Also being a kid and watching the Leslie Ann Warren version of Cinderella. There was a trailer for My Fair Lady with Rex and Audrey Hepburn and that one bit of the song always stuck in my head. And reading Miss Witherspoon by Christopher Durang.

14. Far From the Home I Love- Julia Migenes- Fiddler on the Roof
Attempting to teach Moira to sing. She's not very good, but she can actually get this one out okay.

15. Plump- Hole- Live Through This
Broph, Emily K, Bridgers, and any other friends who have ever had an eating disorder/severe body image problems. "They say I'm plump, but I throw up all the time..."

16. Tales of a Scorched Earth- The Smashing Pumpkins- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Childhood. Late high school. Being all sweet and adorable and then plugging in the speakers: "I lie just to be real, I'd die just to feel"

17. Somebody to Love- The Jefferson Airplane- Surrealistic Pillow
Getting to college and FINALLY being able to go full-out hippie.

18. Tragic Kingdom- No Doubt- Tragic Kingdom
The nineties. When FNX was playing music I loved. When Gwen Stefani wasn't doing HP commercials. Having the most depressing music of any third grader ever. "They pay homage to a king whose dreams are buried in their minds/His tears are frozen stiff; icicles drip from his eyes/Welcome to the tragic kingdom"

19. Quiet- Irina Petina, Barbara Cook- Candide
Me and Carolyn lounging on my couch and/or her couch and loving Patti and Cheno. And singing along. 'Cause we're amazing.

20. She Came in through the Bathroom Window- The Beatles- Abbey Road
Junior year of high school. Durn spurred a major Beatles phase, which he does for everyone. Also, baking cookies when little when Dad would put on Abbey Road or the White Album on our old record player.

21. Front Row- Alanis Morissette- Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Freshman year high school, in my major Alanis phase. Loaning Moira all my CDs and having her come out an Alanis fan. Infecting Emily with my music.

22. Intermediate Jesus- Porcupine Tree- Signify
Meeting Fultie at Dan's and having him think I'm stoned. Watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force and discussing the glory of said tree of porcupines.

23. My Blue Heaven- The Smashing Pumpkins- Thirty-Three
Reminds me of one of those scifi shows where they show a flashback of something unpleasant with the pleasant music and the ominous backnoise.

24. I Know Things Now- Danielle Ferland- Into the Woods
Christie, Lauren and Izzy. All the people I sing this with :-)

25. A Part of That- Sherie Rene Scott- The Last Five Years
Luisa ranting, me purchasing. Sharing it like a virus. Connecting with Lauren by singing Goodbye Until Tomorrow at Titanic backstage.

26. Lithium- Nirvana- Nevermind
Mom's old car. Depressing third grader. FNX. Glorydays. God, I forgot how much I loved this song.

27. Class- Chita Rivera, Mary McCarty- Chicago
Charlieee! Singing along in his car with the volume turned all the way up. I sing Mama, he sings Velma. It's great.

28. Going to California- Led Zeppelin- IV
Late nights/early mornings in Winthrop of all places...it just fits. The sense of melancholy. The idea of leaving because there's just nothing left where you are and having nothing but a vauge sense to guide you to your destination. "Ride a white mare in the footsteps of doom, trying to find a woman who's never never ever been born."

29. Find Your Grail- Sara Ramirez- Monty Python's Spamalot
Summer '05. Broadway freakouts with Carolyn for the first real time. Singing along with my sister. Saying "Sada" over and over again.

30. Dreamboat Annie (Reprise)- Heart- Dreamboat Annie
All my female friends, plus LittleMatt 'cause he shares my love of Heart.

Dear Converse,

Yes, I'm talking to you. The people who made the shoes on my feet. I am mad at you, Converse, for so many reasons. I think that the bullet points will express my unhappiness best.
-You charge $40-70 for shoes made of canvas, rubber, and paint.
-You currently base your company off of an anti-establishment, alternative aesthetic. However, this aesthetic doesn't really work when your shoes are only affordable to those whose parents can afford to allot them $40 for a pair of shoes that fall apart in a few months to a couple years, depending on how much the kid walks.
-Speaking of kids, you market exclusively to kids currently. Unless someone's between the ages of 10 and 25 or an oldschool punk (from back when Chucks were inexpensive). Again, retarded, as you cost too much money.
-You're running a new ad about how the show people are watching and all the commercials are made by "old people" and by watching them you're "buying in" and some crap like that. Yeah. Think about that. It's kind of condescending when you refer to old as "Like, old old. Like your parents age old".

All this is not a reason for me to stop wearing your shoes. However, I DO refuse to pay more than $10 for them. So I don't. Go thrift stores, discounts, and factory rejects.

Get your collective heads out of your collective asses, Converse. The demographic you create pisses me off and I don't want to have to deal with them.

Dear high school,

I have such mixed feelings about you. On the one hand, I miss you. I miss your simplicity. I miss the feeling that absolutely nothing I was doing really mattered. I miss a six hour block where I wasn't able to accidentally fall asleep and miss classes. I miss being able to say "bye" and not deal with the people I didn't want to deal with for a period of about eighteen hours. I miss drinking being a vaguely covert thing done out in a park on Friday nights. And I kinda miss dealing with other peoples drama with the idea of "these people are so dumb, but I'll help".

On the other hand, revisiting you for a play has caused me to remember how irritating those same things are. Blah blah blah college preparing for life. Blah blah blah whiny teenaged drama is grating. Blah blah blah drink responsibly.

I don't know. "Move out within twenty four hours of your last final or by December 13, whichever comes first"? Fuck you. I will stay in my dorm and do my fucking art crap that's due Tuesday. And then I will sleep because I'm not stressing about finishing art and packing and leaving all in the same day. And if you decide to go for threats about fines and whatever, bite my ass; I'm not moving and I'd love to see you try to make me.
And another thing, you really need to get a handle on who moves where, when, and how. Because if I come in next semester and there's someone living in this room who is not me or my current roomate, heads will roll and new people will move in with former roomates in other buildings. You do a happy dance sometimes. It's adorable.
This is why you should dump your psycho bitch girlfriend and find one who isn't insane.
At first, her shrieking and banging on my wall was just annoying. Now it's kinda scary. Slip the girl some horse tranquilizers or something. Then maybe she'll come down from "psycho bitch" to "kind of crazy".
If not for you, dump her for your roomate and your neighbors (hi). this is one of those weird corner rooms where all three rooms are very close to each other. Sound travels better than most places. And I'm sick of hearing her whine and moan and I'm sure everyone else around here is too. Make it stop, next-door neigbor. Make the madness stop.

With love,
Me

P.S. Adding pop riffs to "No Moon" really isn't a good idea. It sounds weird.

This was actually a pretty damned good movie. It set out a goal and it accomplished that goal with style and flair. It was, in a few ways, a bit like Rocky Horror. It was an homage to that entire genre of scifi/action/horror/testosterone movies that everyone knows but no one has really seen anymore. Even the fake trailers fit perfectly (my personal favorite being "Werewolf Women of the SS"). Hell, even ROSE MCGOWAN fits perfectly. C-list celebrity with moderate acting abilities.
PLANET TERROR
This was insane. Very gory, very 'splodey, very pustule filled. However, it was awesome in the thoroughly silly way mentioned above. Rose as the one legged gogo dancer was an adventure in humor, both intentional and "unintentional" (accidentally-on-purpose). The whole gun-leg thing was one of the best parts of the entire double-feature experience. Also, RANDOM SEX/MISSING REEL/FIRE.
Fergie is cannibalized within the first twenty minutes of the film. I must be the first to make a "Fergalicious" joke.
Dr. Dakota Block's "friends" were another favorite (crazy-ass anesthetics loaded into some sort of gun).
Quentin Tarantino's gratuitous cameo was the only true downside to this gorefest. The only decent thing to come out of it was Cherry Darling's first firing of the gunleg (her best was when she used it as a rocket launcher).

DEATHPROOF
The saner of the two movies. Roro Dawson, Tracie Thoms (whose mouth was the other greatest thing in this double feature madness), and a stuntwoman named Zoe who plays herself. The first half of it is thoroughly useless, more of a setup for the "serial killer" type of Val Kilmer's character. The second half is pure revenge caper. It's all worth it for the beatdown of the sniveling, crazy bastard at the end.
There isn't as much to say about this movie, except that it was probably the better of the two.

All in all, Grindhouse is the ultimate incarnation of the genre it represents. It's basically anonymous sex in action movie format: get in, get off, get on with your life, and don't think about it too much or you'll regret it all.

Without spoilers: That was absurd. See it.

Barbara Walsh has my second favorite version of "The Ladies who Lunch" ever. Stritchy's the best overall, and Debra Monk's shriek with the vodka stinger line is awesome, but Babs is reaaaally up there. Especially the end. I'll spoil it not for Jordan, who I'm trying to send the song to.

And Heather Laws beats out Veeanne Cox for my favorite Amy. She goes faster. It's nuts. And yet, you can still clearly distinguish every word she's saying.

Raul Esparza is my new favorite Bobby too. I love Dean Jones, but...come on. "Being Alive" is insane.

In other news, I have a new computer, thanks to my grandmother (it's my graduation present and it got here early). Her name is Marta because that's what I heard first ("April...Marta...Listen, people!")

"Do you think our family's crazy?"
*boom*
...
"The gas main they were working on down the street blew up."
"Oh, thank goodness, I thought it was the pineapple. What was your question?"
"...nevermind."

---

"What are you doing here?"
"Speed-reading lessons, room 303. Dutch, this is RED
1. Closest red thing to you: That bottle of lime coke.
2. Last thing to make you angry: The wind outside Orient Heights.
3. Do you have a temper: Not particularly.
4. Are you a fan of romance: Yup.

ORANGE
1. Closest orange thing to you: That duckie's bill.
2. Do you like to burn things: Not particularly.
3. Are you a coward: Occaisionally.
5. Do you burn or tan: Either/or.

GREEN
1. Closest green thing to you: My chair.
2. Do you care about the environment: Absolutely.
3. Are you jealous of anyone right now: Not that I can think of.
4. Are you a lucky person: More so than some, less so than others.
5. Do you always want what you can’t have: Some things. Nothing, like, soul consuming.
6. Do you like being outdoors: Depends.
7. Are you Irish: Nothing but.

BLUE
1. Closest blue thing to you: Three CDs: Company (2006), Assassins (1990), part of Company (1995).
2. Are you good at calming people down: Yes.
3. Do you like the sea: Yus. Like play-fighting: Not really.
4. Are you sensitive: Yes.
5. Do you like music: Who doesn't?

WHITE
1. Closest white thing to you: My sweatshirt.
2. Would you say you’re innocent: In some ways.
3. Good at keeping the peace: Usually.
4. Do you like to play in the snow: Not really...
5. Are you afraid of going to the doctor or dentist: I hate doctors and dentists.

BLACK
1. Closest black thing to you: My keyboard and my headphones.
2. Ever enjoy hurting people: NO.
3. Are you sophisticated or silly: Both.
4.
I haven't updated in a while. A brief thing.

Last week: Once Upon a Mattress in Lynnfield. I realized fully just how awkward the first act of that show can be. And that's with a GOOD cast (snaps to Corey, Mary, Kelley, Mary Kate, Paige, Peter, Jules, Mark, Devon, and Rachel P!). Esp. Winnifred. I can't remember what her name is, but I liked her. She was funny. So was Aggravain. And Corey as Dauntless, Mary as the Minstrel, and Sarah (who will probably do YAA this summer) as the Jester. Mark was delightfully pompous as Sir Harry, and Devon equally wonderfully flighty as Larkin. They really have to stop. Being married. ALL. THE. TIME.
Also with OUAM, I met up with Maria and Lauren R. We conversed in Dunkies about how the government controls bananas, giraffes, and pink lemons and also has an exclusive contract with Country Time lemonade to deceive the American people about the existance of said pink lemons. Snapple is musceling in. They'll go down soon. You'll see.
Also saw Cory, Alycia, Kara, Eric, Matt, Bridget, Joanne+Tom, Janet F. and Linda J. I love them all.
B+ production of a B- show (when it takes that long to pick up...). That's a good thing :-)

This week: Blah blah blah school. Good mood all week. This weekend, Dan's. The joys of being up at one thirty in the morning doing various animal noises/faces for the amusement of Mike, Max, and Kate. And yes, Liz, the turtle was a success.
Pigeon commanders="Shit, does anyone speak bird? Dude, NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND YOU."
Balls.
"If you do that again so help me I will slap you so hard you won't be able to see. You're laughing. I'm not laughing."

So I'm sick again.

SATURDAY: oh my Jeeeeeesus on a cracker. There was Harvard Square and Lindsay and the Garment District and Melissa and pictures taken and food eaten and bags left and I moved faster than I have since november. I have new shirts from Garment District and my love affair with the $1.50 per pound section continues (pop clothing in washing machine and it becomes good stuff). To organize better, I met Lindsay and Melissa at Park Street at noonish. We traversed to Harvard Square and wandered and had a good time. I got the single for "Tonight, Tonite", thank god. I love the "Mellon Collie" singles. One album track, four b-sides, and the b-sides are excellent (in this case, "Meladori Magpie", "Rotten Apples", and "Medellia of the Grey Skies", the companion to "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans"). We went to Leo's for dinner, and I do love the veggieburgers there. We then spent a great deal of time trying to find an art supply store that didn't exist (Lindsay's grandmother is one of those crazy people who believe that Davis, Porter, Harvard, Central, and Kendall are all the same place, and the store was PEARL ART SUPPLIES WTF). So then there was the Garment District, which was also fun.

SUNDAY: I dunno.

MONDAY-TUESDAY: learning.

WEDNESDAY: Stayed home. Couldn't speak. Felt like crap.

THURSDAY: Math 11/12 and Psych finals. Mom told me I should stay home because I felt worse than the day before. But I went in. And I did fairly well on both tests, then went out for lunch with Mike for my birthday. Pizzeria Regina. Good food. Then I came home and started feeling gradually crappier.

FRIDAY: Came in to school for English finals. Got test. Couldn't understand what "compare and contrast" meant. Coulnd't comprehend written language. Went home. Took me ten minutes to figure out how to work my phone. So I came home and promptly died. By which I mean I fell asleep for an extended period of time. Then I took lots of pills and had some oreos. I feel a bit better, but I can promise you that tomorrow morning I'll want to kill myself.

UPCOMING: Nothing until next week. Hopefully seeing people some time during the week, including Katie, who I haven't seen in forever and a week. Friday, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS WITH LAUREN R AND MARIA YAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Saturday, possibly pre-release with Dan, Mike, and assorted other dweebs. Sunday, family birthday party.

: Counterpoint. Different songs sung at the same time. "Christmas Bells" from "Rent", "One Day More" from "Les Miserables", "Tonight Quintet" from "West Side Story", the end of "Along Came Bialy" from "The Producers", "Wake Up, Wake Up", "To the Lifeboats", "No Moon/Autumn", "The Proposal/The Night Was Alive", and "Dressed in your Pyjamas in the Grand Salon", all from "Titanic", and "The Teaparty of the Madwomen" from "Dear World", a highly underrated show, in my opinion. I love counterpoint, as you can see. I love how deceptively difficult it is for most people to sing in counterpoint (if it isn't for you, welcome to the club, but remember, some people have trouble with harmony).
Going back to "Dear World", it really is good. As much as I love "Mame" and "Mack and Mabel", this is my favorite Jerry Herman score. Only one clunker in the whole show ("I Never Said 'I Love You'", a pretty song with a nice idea, but it needs to be re-worked, imo) while the rest is good with moments of the remarkable. "The Spring of Next Year" contains some of the best lyrics I think Herman ever wrote, and starts a recurring theme in the music that is just so ridiculous that it makes sense. The same ridiculousness turns up later in "Garbage", a fun tango-type song with really cool harmonies. The end is all three madwomen and a sewerman going "Gaaaaarbage, falalalalala, gaaaarbage, falalalalala". And it works. Going back a little is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard Angela Lansbury sing, "I Don't Want to Know". It's a simple melody, but the lyrics coupled with the passion with which Lansbury sings them make it probably my favorite song in the show. Another favorite is the aformentioned triple-counterpoint of "The Teaparty". Utter. Insanity. As in legit insanity. Constance, the Madwoman of the Fleamarket, remembers all her lovers and nothing about her husband. She also talks to voices: "Lately, most of them have passed into my hot water bottle. Except on Fridays, when I can hear them everywhere". Gabrielle, the Madwoman of Monmarte, has an invisible dog named Dickie. And Countess Aurelia, the Madwoman of Challiot, informs us that everything that was ever thought of still exists and can be spoken to, including, but not limited to, Voltaire and Buddha. The title song, "Dear World", has a very cool message. If this show came out in the eighties, it'd be huge. Hell, it could be revived NOW and get a good market. It's all anti-oil and stuff. And then there's "And I Was Beautiful", Jerry Herman's favorite song he ever wrote. It really is a great song. The entire show, I love. But that's enough of my rambling.

Lorca's "The House of Bernarda Alba" was amazing.

LaChiusa's "Bernarda Alba"? Just as good, and possibly cooler. The prologue and the final scenes opening of flamenco stomping and clapping is quite chilling, especially the latter, where it's mixed with Bernarda's shouting and hammering on Adela's door.
It's nice to know that you can still pick Daphne Rubin-Vega out of a crowd. She sounds on this almost exactly like she did back in 1996. Those of you who payed attention to her know that during the 2000-2001 revival of The Rocky Horror Show she sounded kinda sketchy, like Magenta was out of her range, which it really shouldn't have been. But she's good now. I mean, I dunno about right NOW in Les Miserables; the reviews I get on her Fantine are half and half. But on "Bernarda Alba", which was late 2005/early 2006, she sounds great. She's still a truly distinctive sounding woman, but she's developed her ability to blend in. You don't automatically hear her rising over the entire cast like you did in "Rent" unless you intentionally try to pick her out. And this is a smaller cast, too. Her acting's doing fine as well. Her Martirio is chilling and touching at the same time, especially during "Adela".
The best songs by far are those named after the daughters and the servant, Poncia. "Magdalena" is very, very short, but somehow satisfying. "Angustias" stands out with its simplistic, sort of monotonous main phrase: "I can't hear him in my heart". "Amelia" sounds like something ripped out of "Once on this Island" for being too serious, which isn't a bad thing. You can feel the anger, jealousy, and hatred just radiating out of "Martirio". And "Adela" is a gorgeous song when it's just the title daughter, and becomes thousands of times better when her sisters enter with their songs.
Phylicia Rashad is...phenomenal. No other word.
WHY have I never encountered Candy Buckley before?
"Let me Go to the Sea" and "Lullabye" (Maria Josepha's songs) are the other high points of the recording. She's so creepy. "I don't want to see these spinsters longing, their hearts turning to dust"
