After a few weeks of laptop problems (looks like it might be time to consider a replacement), going everywhere in the US that doesn't have an internet connection and other excuses you really don't care about, I present an update! Over 200 photos, adding in 65 new agencies, there's something for everyone. Unless you're in a state I didn't update, then you're probably all "He never adds photos from around me"...think about that, and then go use your camera.
I can hear the screams to stop being witty and get to the pictures already...so without further delay...

The following is a state-by-state breakdown of how far along we are in completing all the states on the website. These numbers reflect current displayed content, not offline photos. So these percentages tend to skew somewhat to significantly higher. For example Alaska only has 1 department (Alaska State Troopers), whereas we have a new load of photos from Alaska via Samuel Smith and Erik Young. Incidentally congrats to Erik, who got married at the end of July. Someone poke me occasionally and I'll update this list every month or so...

Greetings everyone. The dog days of summer are about to be upon us, or already are (it's 101 in Arkansas today). So crank up the A/C and enjoy over 300 new photos, from 73 new departments. I want to thank everyone for their support regarding the recent post I made in regards to photo ownership. It's mere 26 days till college football starts, and even less time till pre-season in the NFL. The Cleveland Indians fell asleep at the wheel this year, so it's back to rooting for Ohio State and the Steelers.
Right now I am kicking around an idea for a first ever National Police Car Archive Design Choice Award. Being it's football season, and there are 31 cities represented (I'm unsure what to do with this as both the Jets & Giants play in East Rutherford, NJ). The competition would be a vote open to all visitors to the website, and be loosely based on the schedules of the cities involved. I'm still working on the details, and on a larger scale I would like to do this with colleges involved in their fall and spring sports programs (Police Car Design Bracket in March anyone?) but we need a lot more departments to be represented from the major conferences first from the Midwest and West Coast.

I don't mean the NFL team from Pittsburgh either. No this is a posting that I hope will discourage the recent rash of borrowing of photos that I have been encountering in the past six months. I recently opened an account on Flickr that I use to back up my own personal photos. Contributors need not worry as your photos are backed up to external HDD and never reposted by our staff.
I began to notice as I posted photos to Flickr, they began to wander off. Also it gave me the opportunity to notice how many of our photos had wandered off the NPCA site and onto various people's Flickr accounts.
Perhaps you belong to the camp that see these types of activities as borrowing, or "collecting". Folks it is not, it is stealing. From me, from other photographers, from the Police Car Site, I don't care where you take them from, the key is your taking them.
Police Car Photo Collecting is one of the easiest hobbies to be involved with, you merely need three things...
1) A Camera
2) A Vehicle or other means of conveyance
3) The ability to get off your lazy ass and down to your local city hall
It would probably be good for you not to have a warrant out for your arrest, or be "one of those guys" to your police either. But there is no good excuse to take photos from other people and claim them to be of your doing. We don't want photos you "came across", "found on the internet", "had sent to you", "saw on another site and figured we'd like them too", "are from the police department's website" or any of the other countless similiar sob stories about your laziness and inability to stop stealing from the internet and take your own photos.
Photographs are copyrighted pieces of property of the originating photographer. We use other people's photos by specific permission. It doesn't give any visitor to this site the right to take them and use them somewhere else because "they're on the internet". This isn't the Wild Wild West and I have no clue why you want to aggravate the supporters of this website the great many of which are actively involved in and/or retired from the emergency services of this country
With gas prices smacking into (and in some states through) the $4/gal level it costs about $12 an hour to operate the average car. Take into effect the cost of a photographer's time, mine is $32/per hour and you're just robbing people of the credit the deserve for their work. I spend 6 to 8 hours a day when I am out pursuing vehicles in Pennsylvania and the tri-state area.
If you haven't caught the drift yet I don't take kindly to people taking our stuff. I also dimly view those visitors to this site who take things and send them into us. So as the FAQ states we do not post stolen photos. Anyone sending in stolen photos will be subsequently banned from submitting photos in the future.
We are all adults here, this isn't a subject for debate, discussion or a vote. I am a police car nut. I can't get enough, so I am constantly searching through sites, Flickr, Fotki, Photobucket and the like for new and interesting things. You will get caught, you will be banned. No one (myself included) is reimbursed for their efforts in making this site what it is today. The average age of a user here is 31-39, we shouldn't even be having this discussion.

Greetings everyone...In this update we are adding all of the photos from our week-long trip to Washington D.C. In doing this we got several thing accomplished.
1) Maryland now needs around 30 departments to be finished.
2) We move over the 6,000 agency mark
3) We add another checkmark to the system.
We finally tracked down a vehicle from the University of D.C. and this completes the District of Columbia. Which granted isn't really a state, but is more than a city and all that, but it is another section of the website that is done. On our 2009 plans we will focus more on working outwards from D.C. We keep on clicking the counter higher and higher. While there were only (only) 240 photos in this update, what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in added departments with 70 new agencies. I am about 1/2 way through the photos from this year's Police Week and have another set of contributor photos in the editing process, so it will be a race between those two to see which one gets posted first.
In the missing agencies arena, some may have not noticed that last update we added Tennessee, in this update I added South Carolina. What I am noticing is a lot of neglecting of colleges. If in doubt most state college & universities have their own police departments, as do a substantial number of private institutions depending on the state. Quickest way to find this out is to go to the school's website and do a search for "POLICE" or "PUBLIC SAFETY" (there are some that still consider themselves Campus Safety or Security) and you'll be on your way to making sure you don't leave these important agencies off your photo field trips.

Another massive update for everyone today. Nearly 400 photos, and 101 new departments. The majority in New Hampshire and North Dakota. This update takes us over 33% complete, which is to say we now cover 1/3rd of the United States! We've returned from National Police Week with around 300 photos. Did some side work while we were in the neighborhood that completes a Virginia County, a Virginia Independent City, and 3 Maryland Counties. This update includes all photos sent in to us for June of 2007.
Thanks to those of you who sent well wishes for the passing of my grandmother last week. Also a Happy Birthday to my mom today, who I will not reveal her age aside to say it's all downhill to retirement from here ;)

Without our annual computer explosion-meltdown-arama?!?!?!
This years issue was thankfully minor, and only required a new power cord for the laptop. As opposed to last year which required a whole new laptop. So this update got a nice delay as I couldn't update the site with no way to recharge the battery and/or plug into a wall. This update covers the Memorial Services for Broward County, Florida Deputy Sheriff Paul Rein in November of 2007. Next we are working on more contributor photos, as well as LAST years Police Week photos, as it's only 22 days till we head back down for 2008 events.
You will also notice a new feature we've added to the site called "Missing Agency List". This will, over time, list the agencies we are missing to complete counties on the website. It will only cover active counties we already have started. I started with Virginia for no other reason than I was born there ;) I will try to add a state or two a week, but it will give you guys out there a chance to see if there is something in the local area you can track down for us. Also welcome Brian McFarland to our staff. Brian is the creater and former webmaster of Nebraska Police Info, a majority of the Nebraska photos we have are from his work in that state. He has also been instrumental along with Rebecca of going through and finding the broken links in the site to fix.

That's right ladies and gents, this week marks the 5th Anniversary of the National Police Car Archives. Just want to thank all of you who have sent in your photographs in the past 5 years to make the site what it is today. I will have more on our 5th Birthday in a "State of the Site Address" in the coming days.
But this is also an UPDATE! Finally! A great deal of the photos I've added went into states that still had many issues with "missing" photos. So a lot more of those issues have been resolved with Indiana, Illinois, New York & New Jersey being the primary fixes. Several smaller states have also been corrected. This update is another chunk of over 400 photos for your viewing pleasure. It includes 93 new departments, more than half of which are from New York. I am about 3/4 of the way through the next set of photos, so the next update will follow reasonably close to this one (no 1 month delay). I would have liked to have had this update out earlier, but I rejoined a former employer and I'll be danged if they don't expect me to actually work (which is a nice change of pace from the begining of this year). Welcoming everyone to 2008 two weeks later...we hit the West Coast and Midwest hard in this update of almost 400 photos. What a way to start off the New Year! I wanted to get this done over the holidays, but holidays being holidays that never quite happened. Hope everyone's holidays went well, and here's looking to an even better year than last!
I went to a LODD Memorial on Christmas Eve for a fallen officer from Smithsburg, Maryland. Those photos will be coming, along with the photos from Broward County, Florida as well as D.C. from way back in May. Sam Smith has photos galore for everyone's tastes (some 1,100+), along with thousands of photos from all your favorite contributors in the coming months.

Greetings to everyone! As you've probably all noticed we've been creeping up on the 20,000 photo mark in the past few months, and today we blow right through it like a country road stop sign. The update consists of over 200 photos, taking care of the photos from February of 2007, and adds 39 new agencies. March was apparently a pretty heavy e-mail month from going through it, so I don't know if I will get that one up before Christmas, or have to work on it from home on my holiday break.

At making the experience better for everyone. The Missouri & Louisiana pages have been fixed of all their errors. Update continues in the background, hopefully get it finished up tonight or tomorrow AM.
As a reminder, if you find dead links, please let us know about them. We need at least the county/state page you were on and what photo you were attempting to access if possible. The links thing gets way out of hand when we don't know about it for months on end. With over 20,000 photos we can't go through each page every week to make sure it's all still working, so sometimes pages only get looked at when new photos are added, and that can sometimes take years.

We recieved a heck of a lot of photos from New Jersey this past January (01/07) and it was confusing to me what belong to who, so I decided to split this update into two parts. I hope to get the other half up before Thanksgiving. Also included in this update are a number of road shots taken in Florida during the manhunt for Michael Mazza who shot and killed Broward County Deputy Paul Rein last Wednesday (11/07/07). I was able to get back down to Fort Lauderdale for the funeral on Tuesday (11/13/07) and have about 200 photos from it to post in the future. Got two new county completions, and overall add 35 new departments.
