sugar peas
Mmm.. fresh sugar peas from the farmers market. They're like peas, only with sugar.

Okay, they taste nothing like that. But their texture is fun.

Unfortunately there is no farmers market near me, which is too bad. I'd like to buy local foods. It's one thing I miss about DC, where there were two markets near me.

The nearest one used to be about three miles away from me, in an urban area with no free parking. But they've been springing up all over -- little ones, open at bizarre times, seldom advertised. Some of them you have to drive by while the market is open to find out about them. So, who knows, there might be one somewhere near you.. if you can find it...

I am not completely sure the stuff at the farmers' market is local. One of the big stands at the market near me is labeled "[something] Brothers" it doesn't say "Farm" or anything and their stuff is not organic. It doesn't say "locally grown" or say where they got it. I suspect it was grown in Mexico and this is whatever the nearby stores didn't take. I try to shop from other vendors instead.

Ah, but as I said, "they taste nothing like that".

It's a pretty silly name, much like snow peas, which I can assure you do not grow in snow or even taste much like snow -- unless you smoke them in exhaust fume and toss them in the freezer for a few weeks to develop some hoarfrost.
