Reading Spree
Ah...the weather has started to get crisp (except for all that rain we had yesterday). I just love all the cool breezes and the wonderful smell of a beginning fall.
So, this past Friday I went to see Jet Li's film. It was good. I never knew I'd like martial arts films, but this is the second one in a three week span. After I get out of the movie, I want to go around kicking some A. My friend Suzie apparently feels the same inclination because she playfully karate chopped me after the film.
Saturday, I did nothing all day except read and watch Queer As Folk (WOAH what a show) and visit Books a Million. I finished reading Benito Cereno in an attempt to refresh my Melville knowledge. I think Bartleby the Scrivenor is more fun to read, but oh well. Benito is good for all the cultural assuptions the irony uncovers. The text probably lends itself to a post-colonial reader, but also I think psychoanalists could so some work cause we readers get much insight into Captain Delano's thought processes. I think Melville was on the edge of writing free indirect discourse before modernism sprang up.
Anyway, I bought a copy of The Taming of the Shrew and read half of it last night. I must admit I've not read this play before. Love it!
So, today I'm at work. Sundays are usually light and easy. This morning I got up and went to mass and sang. We did some nice pieces. I think our choir director is doing some grand things. I find, though, that I have a tough time with musicians'personalities, but really this guy is nice. He's just tempermentally a stereotypical director in several ways. Today he gave me CS Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. I read parts of it during the rosary and found its satire delightful.
Well, enough pedantism for one post. I shall shut up for another week.
Peace!
