TM Challenge: What does Karma mean to you?
Karma. I think karma is like that weird hippie sh*t my parents used to talk about. I never really paid attention, but I think it means that if I’m like, super nice to someone, then they’re supposed to be super nice back to me. I don’t really believe in that though, because I’m always super nice, and yet bad things still happen. I mean, just the other day I got a speeding ticket. A speeding ticket! It’s so unfair. And I tried to be nice to the cop, but he didn’t even care; he just kept repeating the words “school zone” as if that’s somehow justification for doubling the fee. See? So, just when I think things are looking up, something stupid like this happens.

Maybe I should try this karma thing though. I mean, look at people like Denise. She’s not that much older than me and yet she gets to be a lawyer and have awesome hair. How much of that is due to karma? *crosses arms and raises eye brows* You just can’t know. But then I look at people like Denny. This weirdo shoots poor people with paint guns, sexually harasses everybody and sets a bad example of moral conduct by having alcohol at his desk, and yet he gets to be the senior partner and be on TV a lot. Things always turn out okay for Denny Crane. I bet he has no idea what it feels like to have his power shut off in the middle of winter. And what about Mr. Chase? With the sacrifices he must have made in Vietnam or wherever, he deserves to be the owner of the company. And what about Alan? He’s been so cool to me and gave all that money to the homeless guy, and yet he’s still single. *pauses and looks out the window for a while*

So whatever. It seems to me like everything in the world is just random. But okay, here’s the deal. As a test, I’ll give it a try. For the next little while I’m going to push myself and try even harder to be super nice. Like, I could make coffee for Mr. Chase tomorrow, or not hang up on Alan’s rude clients. I could even give Ms. Schmidt some advice on her wardrobe or try to have a conversation with Hands. There’s all kinds of things I could do. We’ll see about this karma thing. *narrows eyes* We’ll see.

As for my hair, I subscribe to a karma called "blowouts" at my hair salon.

*looks slightly confused* Really? Well, it works great. And Denise, the next time I go to my hair salon? I'm totally bringing a picture of you!

*Amused* That's very nice of you to say. Listen, I'll bring you with me the next time I go and you will get one too. My treat.

Speaking of getting along, how do you like working for Alan?

You know, a lot of people ask me that, and they usually sort of cringe as they ask; I'm not sure why. Alan's awesome, *then, in an exaggerated professional tone* as long as you set clear boundaries with him. Sometimes he gives me a lot of work to do though, but then he'll make up for it by, you know, getting you out of jail or getting rid of your credit card debt and stuff like that. But I don't think I know him very well yet.

He is not a very easy person to get to know, let alone understand. I think he likes it that way. Keeps people on their toes. Unpredictable, but a brilliant attorney nevertheless. Fearless too. You will learn a lot from him. Just try not to get emotionally involved, if you know what I mean.

*listens intently, then tries hard to appear nonchalant* I appreciate your concern, but that would absolutely never happen. I don't get emotionally involved. *rests chin in hands* He was totally amazing though. You should have seen him in that conference room. He actually felt the credit card guy's face and the guy was like, 'what are you doing?' and Alan's like, 'just wanted to make sure you're real.' and it was so freakin' hilarious *stops as she realizes she no longer sounds nonchalant* but . . . anyway.

How was your Christmas?

*Eyebrows raised* Uh-huh.

My Christmas was just perfect. I treated my parents to a Christmas brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel here in Boston. How was yours?

Ah. The way that works is when a woman with exceptionally bad karma comes along, cosmic forces assign her to date me. Right now I find myself in an interim period, but as there's no shortage of karmically-impaired women in the world, I'm not worried.

*pauses while trying to determine whether she would qualify as "karmically-impaired"*

You know. I told you this before and I'll say it again. You are a strange man, Alan. I can't figure out if you're completely self-depreciative or completely egotistical. Somehow you manage to be both at the exact same moment.

Oh hey, I was going to tell you. The printer got jammed somehow when I was trying to print labels, so those letters you wanted me to mail haven't gone out yet. Isn't there an intern or something around here who can fix those types of things?

Well, I suppose there's Garrett. If you need the printer pried apart with an axe, I can tell Brad it refused to disclose the location of a kidnapped child.

*nods slowly* I'll. Try. Garrett.

*matter-of-factly* You're welcome to take it however you wish. *pretends to resume working on typing class assignment* But just so you know? Just because I called you sexy doesn't mean I'm going to sleep with you. I've very selective and very cautious and if you think I'm the type to just give it away, you're totally wrong so don't even think about it.

You forget we have slept together and you were most explicit about your terms, if nothing else. *pauses* Melissa, I haven't for a second entertained the notion that you'd sleep with me without either a compelling reason or a legally binding contract.

I didn't forget. *suddenly remembering vividly how it felt to comfort him while he fell back asleep* But that didn't count, unless something occurred while I was asleep *looks suspicious for a second, then reconsiders*. Ok, well I'm glad that we're understanding each other. Have you finished your Christmas shopping?

Karma's fiction. Simple as that. Look at all the contradictions. Miss Hughes, do the right thing because it's right.

Black. You got it Mr. Chase!

*nods* You know, I like your no-nonsense attitude. You tend to cut right to the . . . chase. ha ha. I guess I agree with you, *sighs* but I like the idea of karma. I mean, it seems like bad people should, you know, get what they deserve. And if I put forth the effort to do the right thing, then I should be rewarded somehow.

*warming to her efficiency; with a 'presenting Miss Hughes' gesture* Gold star.

*Brad looks at her very seriously as she talks* You raise a compelling philosophical point. You could say we dispense karma when we do our jobs correctly. I like to think we help our clients get what they deserve. But, like there is no real karma, we also, in doing our job, alleviate the sting of real just desserts for some clients. There was this issue last year with a partnership and contractual relations...

If Gwen Stefani can have a baby for god sake I should be able to hook up with someone too. I don't dress like a ho. It was a weird coincidence that the boyfriend guy on CSI Miami last night just happened to have a shoulder injury. Brad would be cuter if smiled once in a while. karma karma karma karma karma chameleon. I wonder if the printer has been fixed . . .

Oh totally. I know what you mean.
