Falling In and Out of Love

I left Chicago today. I packed all of my stuff into the back of my truck, just like all those other times when I decided to hit the road and find a new town to fall in and out of love with. My pick-up truck is just a big ole suitcase on wheels, and I pack it tight with all the junk I managed to collect in Chicago: Packets of snapshots, and half-read books and even a neon-orange safety vest that I wear when I ride my bike. The safefy vest says 'City of Chicago' in big black letters. The same vest that all the crossing gaurds downtown wear, and when I wear it, people think I'm a crossing gaurd, too, and they ask me for directions. Sometimes I know where things are, but mostly I don't. Then the people asking for directions get annoyed and I can tell what they're thinking. They're thinking "You're supposed to know where things are because you're wearing an orange safety vest." I got that orange vest because it's scary to ride a bike in Chicago. But I also got it because I wanted to win that place over. I figured if I wore the city's name across my chest, the city might soften up and cut me some slack. The city didn't cut me much slack, but at least I didn't get killed on my bike.
I pack my truck up with all the little notes I'd written to myself about things I should do or things I should see that I never got around to doing or seeing; big boxes of good intentions that just barely fit in my truck. I don't know what I'd do if they didn't fit. Maybe I'd have to actually stay put for a change. Maybe I'd have to settle down. They I say goodbye to my roommate, the best roommate yet, and I drive away without looking back because it's already sad enough just driving away. I get one last spinach pie at the good Middle Eastern place on North Avenue. The kid inside nods at me because I'm a regular, and I think about telling him that I wont be coming in anymore, but I just nod back instead. I drive out of town on Roosevelt, through the westside ghettos and through Cicero till Cicero becomes the suburbs and the suburbs become corn fields. The whole time I daydream about a paradise planet where everyone lives forever, and their primary pursuit is falling in love with each other and then saying goodbye and going away for a million years. They'd say the saddest, sweetest so-longs. In fact, saying goodbye would be this planet's most popular art form. Then a million years later, they'd meet up again and, you know it'd be great and people would spend a few thousand years just catching up.
The weather is perfect as I leave Chicago, like the city is trying to make me feel guilty for leaving, or maybe it's trying to convince me that its changed its ways. "About February," its saying, "I know that was pretty cold, okay, okay, really cold. But listen, a city can change." I drive out of Chicago and pretty soon I cross the Mississippi and drive out of Illinos. It IS a nice day, all right, but I'm not fooled for a second.

Bill Brown -Dreamwhip (#13)
