Rec

Yes, I'm still alive.

At the moment RL is quite busy and I don't spend much time online, only to write emails and - far less often than I used to - to read fics.

And - contrary to popular belief - not all the the fics I read center around Harry and Snape, so when when I find outstanding stories I sometimes cannot review them on S.C.H.A.L.. And so I rec them here.

Today's rec goes to Crookshanks22, who writes amazing, refreshingly intelligent stories about minor characters. So if I are sick of reading the same pairings over and over again and seeing the same often shallow plots, just take a break and read her fics.

Maryx

*yawns*

X-Mas

It is snowing, quite heavily actually, and I suddenly realised that Christmas is only some weeks away.

That lead to two further realisations:

I definitely have to hurry up and buy some Christmas presents

I have to send out Christmas Cards.

So: Who wants one?

I already have some addresses, but I would like more ;-)

I can offer traditional Christmassy Christmas cards, self-decorated
modern-Berlin ones or self-christmassified mediaveal town ones
(although I won't be able to send those before mid-December)

Leave your address, name, age, shoe-size, favourite colour and whatever else you want to tell me in a comment.
Title: Fortune Favors the Bold
Author: opalish
Rating: a kiss... do you really need a rating for a simple kiss?
Pairing: HP/BW
Summary: Ginny was the first to recognize the signs. The reddened cheeks, the sidelong glances, the funny little smiles...

A nice fic about an innocent Harry and his influence on members of the Weasley family. I love innocent Harry! *dreams*

M

I watched the new 'Pride and Prejudice' movie today.

I adore the book and I loved the BBC production and because of that I wasn't sure if there was any possibilty for that I might like the new version. Surprisingly, I did.
Sure, it can't compete, but they still did a good job. No romanticised crap with a 'Jane Austen' label, as some of the adaptions of her other novel are.

The new movie was quite interesting. I liked that the Bennett family's relativ poverty was shown. Keira Knightly is not as comfortably settled as as Jennifer Ehle: plainer robes, smaller carriages, the run-down house. And she's not as accomplished, well-behaved or sure of her place either. That is a interesting new interpretation, as now class distinctions and the difference in rank between Darcy and Elizabeth are even more obvious.

In the novel Lizzy is around twenty, Darcy in his mid-twenties. I always found Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth always were a little too old and too mature, especially I read 'Bridget Jones' diary'. The BBC version has grown-up characters, people who you could easily picture in a job or with their own family, but not the younger, still slightly insecure people of my age.

The down-to earthness of most characters in the new film was nice, although the exaggerately whimsical protagonists in the BBC version where quite enjoyable, too.

My view on this film might have been a little coloured: I was really fond of Mr. Bingley and his sister - though the reasons were quite different: Kelly Reilly was a wonderful bitchy upperclass snob and I loved her for that. Mr. Bingley was just adorable and very cute. Did I ever mention how much I love red hair? *smiles dreamily*

All in all a pleasant surprise.

M

And of butterflies. *grins*

Mosylu was one of the first authors I read when I was new in this fandom and I really loved her stories back then.
The first novel-length fanfic I read in quite a while:

Unbecoming by Cinnamon
Part One: Denial (The Unbecoming of Ronald Weasley) Denial and fear aren’t such horrible things, especially when you’ve got alcohol and loneliness to hide behind. Ron is perfectly happy in the empty life he’s made for himself, until Draco Malfoy takes one look at him and understands the things Ron fears even better than he himself does. Draco/Ron, R, AU, Post-Hogwarts
I loved the first chapters of this story, Draco Malfoy was quite Malfoyish, Ron was nicely portrayed in his insecurity and his denial. Later parts are unfortunately a little confusing and too emotional. The old problem of the girlification of gay characters. It also bugged me a bit that Harry was gay as well. Writing slash doesn't mean that every leading character has to be homosexual, it's not very realistic.
'Unbecoming' is the first fic that convinced me that Ron, the straightest character in the whole series could actually be portrayed as gay.
All in all quite interesting.

The 'Things That Are True' Meme
I felt myself tagged by kennahijja

Rules: Bold the following that are true about you, italicize
things you wish were true, add one true thing about you, and then tag five more
people.

I miss somebody right now.
I don't watch much TV these days. – I don’t even have a TV, I grew up without one so I never really
missed it.
I love olives.
I own lots of books.
I wear glasses or contact lenses.
I love to play video games.
I've tried marijuana. – Once. My throat is still scratchy. It was a bong
and I was coughing like mad and it didn’t even have any effect apart from
making me sleepy.
I've watched porn movies. – One from the 1970ies with my gay flatmates – it was hilarious and
more in a more private environment, those ranged from boring to mildly
disgusting.
I have been in a threesome.
I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship.
I believe honesty is usually the best policy.
I curse sometimes. – Who doesn't?
I have changed a lot mentally over the last year. – The year before that, yes,
but this year? Not really.
I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me. –
Why should I?
I'm TOTALLY smart. – Sure ;-)
I've broken someone's bones. – Only my own.
I have a secret that I am ashamed to reveal.
Again,
who doesn't?
I hate the rain. – I hate grey skies and unfortunately those usually
rain doesn’t come without those.
I'm paranoid at times.
I would get plastic surgery if it were 100% safe, free of cost, and scar-free. –
No, somehow I wouldn’t be ‘I’ anymore.
I need money right now. – Who doesn’t?
I love sushi. – A rather recent development.
I talk really, really fast. But only if I'm excited. – Make that: Most
of the time, excited or not.
I have fresh breath in the morning.
I have long hair.
I have lost money in Las Vegas.
– Never been there and I’ll never go there as long as Mr. Bush insists on
taking my fingerprints when I enter the country.
I have at least one sibling. – More than one, and from the noise we made
there might have been twenty of us.
I was born in a country outside of the U.S.
I have worn fake hair/fingernails/eyelashes in the past.
I couldn't survive without Caller I.D. – It's nice, but not necessary
I like the way that I look. – More or less.
I have lied to a good friend in the last 6 months.
I know how to cornrow.
I am usually pessimistic.
I have a lot of mood swings. – Thank god, no!
I think prostitution should be legalized.
I think Britney Spears is pretty. – Why is it virtually impossible to avoid
that girl? She seems to invade my life whenever I least expect her!
I slept with a Suitemate. – Provided I understood that word correctly
and it is something similar to ‘flatmate’
I have a hidden talent. – Lots of them! Only they are so well hidden that
even I don’t know them all.
I'm always hyper no matter how much sugar I have. – What is it with this
‘sugar’ and ‘hyper’ thing? According to scientific research one does not have
anything to do with the other so drop it!
I have a lot of friends.
I am currently single.
I have pecked someone of the same sex. – Does my Grandmother count?
I enjoy talking on the phone. – Nope! Telephone is better than no contact at
all, but I try to avoid it.
I practically live in sweatpants or PJ pants. – No, I loathe that habit.
Besides, I do have many comfortable, old, baggy trousers and t-shirts.
I love to shop. – Nope.
I enjoy window shopping. – Not really
I would rather shop than eat. – What are you insane? You have to get your
priorities in order!
I would classify myself as ghetto. – I suppose you could somehow define my
hometown in the middle of nowhere as ‘ghetto’…
I'm bourgie and have worn a sweater tied around my shoulders. – ???
I'm obsessed with my Xanga or Livejournal. – Not really ‘obsessed’, no, a minor addiction perhaps.
I don't hate anyone. – But there were one or two close calls.
I'm a pretty good dancer. – I wish!
I'm completely embarrassed to be seen with my mother. – Depends!
I have a cell phone. – But I don’t use it that often, expect as
substitute for a watch.
I believe in a god(s). – Faithful agnostic.
I have passed out drunk in the past 6 months. – No, never so far. I’ve been
pretty drunk, but at some point I always stop drinking.
I've rejected someone before. – I even turned down an offer of
marriage.
I currently like someone. – Like, like… I like a lot of people, but I do not
fancy anyone at the moment.
I have no idea what I want to do for the rest of my life. – The problem is that
I have millions of ideas.
I want to have children in the future. – I always wanted children, but I’m not
so sure about it any more.
I have changed a diaper before.
I've called the cops on a friend before. – Why should I?
I am a member of the Tom Green fan club. – Who?
I'm not allergic to anything. – I’d wish!
I have a lot to learn. –
Who hasn’t?
I have been with someone at least 10 years older or younger. – Older. I would’t
want to molest teenagers *shudders*
I am shy around the opposite sex.
I'm online 24/7, even as an away message.
I have at least 5 away messages saved.
I have tried alcohol or drugs before.
I have made a move on a friend's significant other or crush in the past.
– Yes, but I didn’t know she had a crush on him.
I own the "South Park" movie. – I’ve never ever
watched "South Park". Lack of TV.
I have avoided assignments at work/school to be on Xanga or Livejournal.
– I do almost anything to avoid assignments.
When I was a kid I played "the birds and the bees" with a neighbor or
chum. – If I did, it wasn’t as important an experience to still remember it.
I enjoy some country music. – Nope!
I would die for my best friends. – Depends on the cause. (That’s a good
answer, so I don’t really have to think about this question)
I think that Pizza Hut has the best pizza. – Too greasy and they don’t have my
favourite toppings. And why should I g to Pizza Hut when there are so many
Italian restaurants that offer real pizza for the same price?
I watch soap operas whenever I can. - I? Do you know me at all?
I'm obsessive and often a perfectionist.
I have used my sexuality to advance my career.
I love Michael Jackson, scandals and all. – cp. ‘Britney Spears’
I know all the words to Slick Rick's "Children's Story". – I can
safely answer ‘no’ as I have no idea what is meant.
Halloween is awesome because you get free candy. – I think I’m a little to old
for free candy.
I watch Spongebob Squarepants and I like it.
I have dated a close friend's ex.
I like surveys/memes.
I am happy at this moment. I have physiotherapy in an hour, how can I be
happy?
I'm obsessed with guys.
Democrat.
Conservative Republican. – Hell, no!
I am punk rockish.
I am preppy. – As much as I try, I could never reach that state of immaculate
perfection.
I go for older guys/girls, not younger. – More or less yes, but I’m
willing to make exceptions.
I study for tests most of the time. – I study for most of my tests, but I do not spend most of my time
studying.
I tie my shoelaces differently from anyone I've ever met. – I used to
when I first learned to tie a bow as my grandmother (who taught me) was left
handed.
I can work on a car. – I don’t have a car
and I hoe I will not need one in as very long time.
I love my job. – I’ll be very happy when I finally finish university.
I am comfortable with who I am right now. – More or less, yes.
I have more than just my ears pierced. – I
do not have my ears pierced, let alone anything else.
I walk barefoot wherever I can. – Very true! Barefoot or in socks to be
specific
I have jumped off a bridge. – There was a lovely little river below and
it was a hot day.
I love sea turtles. – In a soup perhaps…
I spend ridiculous amounts of money on makeup. – Depends on your definition of
‘ridiculous amounts’. My father would say any cent spend on make-up is too
much, but in comparison to any average female I spend rather little.
I believe in prophetic dreams. – I’ve been in situations where I was sure that
I had already experienced them in a dream (just a strange variation of a
déjà-vu), but I would never believe that something would come true because I
had dreamt about it.
I plan on achieving a major goal/dream. – Sure, who doesn’t have these
major goals and dreams and some (more or less realistic) plans on how to
achieve it.
I am proficient on a musical instrument. – I used to, at least. Recorder,
alto. And during QaF Season 2 (?) I actually thought of unpacking my violin,
but my broken arm saved my flatmates from a fate worse than death.
I worked at McDonald's restaurant. – I try to avoid McD as much as possible.
It’s been more than a year that I’ve last been in one.
I hate office jobs.
I love sci-fi movies.
I think water rules. – Rules what? The world? Not yet, but it will.
I went to college out of state. – I went from Bavaria to Berlin, if that
counts. Oh yeah, and I went to study abroad, but that was a little later.
I am adopted.
I like sausage. – I hinted at it before: I am from Bavaria.
I am a pyro.
I love the Red Sox. - ???. I love red shoes, though.
I have thrown up from crying too much. – No, but I’ve throwing up and crying.
I have been intentionally hurt by people that I loved. – Yes, that
bastard!
I love kisses.
I fall for the worst people and have been hurt every time. [quote kennahijja
again] I don't *fall* for anybody beyond a kind of controllable
crush/affection.
I adore bright colors. – Yes, bright black! (okay, I don’t mind bright red
either)
I love Dear Abby. – Perhaps if I knew what it was.
I can't live without black eyeliner. – The goth girl inside me is very much
under control most of the time.
I think school is awesome. – Big ‘NO’
I think pigtails serve a purpose. – To keep your hair out of your face.
I don't know why the hell I just did this stupid thing.
I usually like covers better than originals. – WTF?
I don't like multi-textured ice cream. – Aha. Let’s just say I love any and
every kind of ice-cream, as long as it’s without alcohol.
I think John Cusack is adorable. – That’s the guy from ‘High Fidelity’? Nope,
he was tpp boring, music-obsessed and whiny in that film.
I fucking hate chain theme restaurants like Applebees and TGIFridays. – Someone
explain please!
I watch Food Network way too much. – I like food. I cook it, I eat it, I might
even watch it, but there’s not network behind it, I can assure you.
I love coaching youth sports. – Yes, only there are three words wrong in this
sentence: ‘coaching’, ‘sports’ and ‘youth’
I can pick up things with my toes. – I also open doors with my feet when
I have my hands full.
I can't whistle. – I produce a sound that I would called ‘whistiling’ almost
all the time when I am in the kitchen or the bathroom and so far my flatmates
have not complained.
I can move my tongue in waves, much like a snakes' slither. – What for?
I have ridden/owned a horse. – Yes, but that fascination stopped when I
was about nine.
I still have every journal I've ever written in. – I think so, yes. But
usually there are only one or two entries and then I abandoned it again.
I can't stick to a diet. – I can, but not for more than two hours.
I talk in my sleep.
I've often thought that I was born in the wrong century. – I think the
future might be nice, but as I can’t know for sure. Definitely not the past, I
cherish modern comforts like hot showers, coffee and education.
I try to forget things by drowning them
out with loads of distractions. – Unfortunately it
doesn’t work.
Climbing trees is a brilliant past-time. – How old do you think I am? Ten?
I have jazz in my blood. – The doctor said no.
I would not be friends if they weren't family. – What’s that supposed to mean?
But I can assure you that there are several people that I call family, but I
would never call them friends because they aren’t, we merely have the
misfortune of sharing some ancestors.
I wear a toe ring. – What for?
I have a tattoo.
I love vaginas. – I still have to make up my mind about that one.
I can't stand at LEAST one person that I work with. – Try more than one!
I am a caffeine junkie.
I know who Santos L. Halper is. – No.
I read trashy romance novels and I am ashamed. – I read trashy fanfic,
does that count?
I love wrestling. – *rolls eyes*
I am completely tree-huggy spiritual, and I'm not ashamed at all. – I don’t
mind trees as long as they stay out of my way and no, I am very much not
spiritual, thank you.
If I knew I would get away with it, I would
commit at least one murder. – No, it is very wrong to kill a person, not matter
what the circumstances are. And a more selfish reason: I could not deal with
the guilt.
I cosplayed or know what cosplaying is.
I have been to over 15 conventions. – No a single one.
I will collect anything, and the more nonsensical, the better. – In my
first semester as university we learned that all collectors are somewhat nutty
and that you should never work in a museum that has objects you collect
privately. Now that I am almost finished with my studies and after meeting many
collectors in the course of it, I have to agree to a certain extent. On the
other hand, all avid HP fans are somewhat nutty and I count myself among them.
I enjoy a nice glass of wine with dinner.
I'm an artist. – I am prejudiced against people who call themselves artists. In
my opinion it’s not an attitude or a title you can give yourself, but it’s
something you have to earn.
I have a goal to collect every Johnny Depp movie ever made. – Good idea!
I am ambidexterous.
I sleep with so many stuffed animals, I can hardly fit on my bed. – Hell no!
My computer has a name. – Only when it misbehaves!
If it weren't for having to see other people naked, I'd live in a nudist
colony.
I have terrible teeth.
I hate my toes. – Why should I.
I did this Meme even though I wasn't tagged by the person who took it before
me.
I have more friends on the internet than in
real life.
I have lived in either three different states or countries. – Both actually, I have lived in four different countries (Australia, France, Ireland and Germany) and in three different states (Bundesländer) in my own country.
I am extremely flexible.
I love hugs more than kisses.
I want to own my own business. – I’m working on it!
I smoke or tried cigarettes. – Once, and I had an allergic reaction to it.
I have met a star from ABC's LOST. – No, and I’m not at all interested.
I spend way too much time on the computer than on anything else. – Can’t
argue with that!
Nobody has ever said I'm normal.
Sad movies, games, fics and the like can cause a trickle of tear every now and
then.
I am proficient in the use of many types firearms and combat weapons. – NO! And
I can’t see any reason why anyone outside police and army should be.
I like the way women look in stylized men's suits. – Substitute ‘like’
with ‘love’
I don't like it when people are displeased or seem displeased with me.
I have been described as a dreamer or likely to have my head up in the cloud.
I have played tennis with my non dominant hand before.
I have played strip poker with someone else before.
I read the labels on food, shampoo, and
other things just because. – Sometimes
I have emotional problems for which I have sought professional help.
I believe I am in love with a Japanese rock star. - *snorts*
I believe I am in love with a fictional Japanese character.
I have dated someone who has had more than 300 sexual partners.
I have told a friend that I have a crush on them.
I have cheated on a boyfriend/girlfriend.
I have been in a romantic relationship with members of both the same and the
opposite sex.
I am happy with my current relationship.
I have had sex with an uncircumcised male. – I’ve never had sex with a
circumcised male. Different culture.
I am often attracted to unsuitable individuals.
I love brussel spouts and rutabagas. – Not really. I prefer broccoli and
spinach (Honestly!)
I collect sand. – WTF?
I love Reality TV.
I'm hopelessly bad with anything that doesn't interest me.
I’ve been part of an art exhibition –
both with my works and as a model

I never imagined I could enjoy,... hell, even read a HP/TR story, even less one with a dubiously incestous subplot.
I stumpled upon A single Love via painless_j's
time-travel list. It has a very different take on the 'After the final
battle a broken Harry travels back in time' scenario and the old
'nature versus nurture' will never lose it's fascination. I'm not too
sure of what to think about some minor issues the fic deals with, but
all in all it was a very pleasant surprise.
There's only one possible explanation:
Physiotherapy has been invented by the Health Mafia, that wants that people feel as uncomfortable as possible for as long as possible so they can make as much profit of any case as possible.

Or perhaps they are all controlled by little aliens that feed on pain...

Since I have started Physiotherapy my joint is hot and swollen and it has started hurting again.

And here I thought it was supposed to make me better!

Hair and shoes are quite realistic though.

I saw this little thingy on Nessime's LJ and I thought it might be interesting.
The results are a little surprising though. ;-)

You scored as Albus Dumbledore. Strong and powerful you admirably defend your world and your charges against those who would seek to harm them. However sometimes you can fail to do what you must because you care too much to cause suffering.

Albus Dumbledore

<font face="Arial"
Thoughts on Chapter 1

I'm currently rereading HBP, much slower this time and with more attention to detail.

It's starts with the Muggle Prime Minister sitting in his office after
a difficult week. A portray coughs, the sign that the Minister of Magic
is going to visit. We hear about the history of Prime Minister and 'The
Other Minister". Fudge comes, he is no longer MoM, Rufus
Scrimgeour is. He used to be the head of the Auror division. He
is the man that "looked rather like an old lion", about whom the fandom
speculated for months. All three talk before Fudge an Scrimgeour leave
with "The trouble is, the other side can be magic too, Prime Minister".

I liked this chapter, it was a good introduction, light and humorous on
the surface, but rather dark in it's content. We see that the war has
reached the Muggle world, there are murders and catastrophes.
The chapter provides the setting, it describes the new world in which
Voldemort is no longer afraid to use his power. But to me this chapter
was not more than an introduction, as it is not closely tied to the
rest of the book. Many things mentioned in this chapter are not
mentioned again, things that I would have regared as important, the
giants, the breeding dementors, the catastrophes. This chapter is a bit
unrelated to the rest of book six, but I suppose it could be quite
important for book seven.

I'll continue later. Uni calls
Ready to kill
I am ready to kill my flatmate!

We never got along too well. I always thought of her as an immature
little brat, moody, lazy, selfish and always ready to point out
faults in others, while overlooking these sames faults in herself. She
thinks that I am a stuckup Dursley-type or person. It escalated
this morning, when the dog she got herself last week against all
agreements kept me awake all night. She was away, the dog was
howling her small room and I was quite angry after only
three hours of disturbed sleep.

That would not be a reason to kill her, no, I'm moving out anyway (sick
of weeks of uncleaned bathrooms and mouldy food in the kitchen), so I
can very much ignore her name-calling door-banging.

But now she did the unforgiveable deed: The post came and with it my
copy of HBP and she refused to accept it! So the postman went away with
my (my!) HBP. I hope I can get it later today at the post office. I was
there and they told me that they did not know if it would be possible
to pick it up today. Now I'm sitting here, all giddy and very very very
very annoyed.

If you hear of a very cruel murder in connection with HBP than that
might have been me killing her if I do not get my copy tonight.
Grrrrhhh! At least in prison I would have enough time to read it!

Maryx

It's three in the afternoon now and I still don't have HBP!

It's almost three o'clock now. Night-time and I'm still far away from sleep.

Thankfully tomorrow is the odd Monday I do not have course in the morning. ;)

I was just reading a wonderful conversation about cats and their antics on kennahijja's journal: Open Letter to the Furry

I found it quite interesting although I'm anything but a cat person.

I might finally be sleepy enough to go to bed.

Maryx

I'm going to be printed!

I thought I'd never add any post after the initial one, but I just had
to share this news: I just got any eMail from an old boss who told me
that someone wanted to print something I wrote some years back.
Nope, I do not have any fiction in the drawer that I did not want to share with you, it's a research paper.
About 30 pages of historic research that I wrote when I was still in
school. I spend several weeks (full-time!) studying sources in the
local archives, digging through old newspapers and 19th century
records. The paper turned out well and I was really proud of it.
And after
several years at university and a lot of written papers I can say that
the research paper I wrote for school is still my best academic work. ;)

So this guy found a copy of it in the local archives and really liked
it. He asked my former boss where he could find the author of this
text and contacted me this afternoon. He wants to print it as part of an anthology
on social history. It's not going to be anything fancy, but I get paid
and I can have it at my terms. Sure, they are going to edit it
and I know that there are some things that I have to rework (I was 18
when I wrote it), but I am going to decide on the final version. (Which
basically means that I can keep all the footnotes that I deem necessary
;)

Yeah!

I finally decided to open a new journal. (I somehow lost the password of my old one.) Here I am.

As I am not much of a poster, this will probably be the only entry I ever make.
