It looks like I'm not going to work today. I have my midwife appointment at 9.30, then I have an emergency doctor appointment at 1.30, so by the time I got to work I'd have to leave again for the next appointment. I've been having a slight problem with my right eye lately; it's been watering a lot and the tear duct gets sore. It's usually fine if I give it a squeeze, but I woke up at 5am this morning and the pain was worse and wouldn't go away. I've given it a soak in chamomile tea but I think it's probably a good idea to get it seen to as it's quite uncomfortable.
At least it means I can get lots of stuff done today which is always good. I have things to post and I want to get on with my knitting. As always it's also tempting to start a new knitting project. Now that I can knit in the round I can make so many more things, so it's all quite exciting. And if my order of preserving bottles arrive, I might go and pick rosehips for rosehip syrup.
For now I'd better go for my first appointment. |

| | A mental mishmash of Daltrey and Bowie | ] | Well, that was a good weekend in Manchester last week for the annual lads' beer and sport meet.
This year's event, to my great pleasure was the Super League Grand Final, and my dearest team Leeds made it there and for the second year running beat the odds-on favourites St Helen's to become effective northern hemisphere champions. Next on the agenda will be the NRL champions Manly.
It was of course good to see the lads, to let them beat me at poker, and to walk back into Manchester in the pouring rain in my Batley Bulldogs shirt along the inside lane carriageway, much to the chagrin of numerous drivers.
As for the weekend just gone, it was notable for the return of dee_ from Sydney, and also for the beginning of the korfball season, where one win out of two wasn't a bad return for a heavily remodelled team. I'm not sure we'll finish higher than last season, but it's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.
Finally for now, a couple of excellent weddings. I was in Manchester three weeks ago as well (never escape from Lancashire at the moment it seems) for the wedding of Ali to Nally, and that was excellent for the wedding itself, and for seeing lots of excellent people that I don't see often enough. Around the same time, my old mate Kellie also got hitched, proving Facebook is useful for something (my knowledge, not their marriage as far as I know...)
And finally finally, the travel reporter on the radio has just inadvertantly reported hold-ups outside the Dick Turpin pub... |

We finally had a successful foraging session today! Barry, Pricey and I went for a walk along the old railway armed with tupperware boxes in hope of brambles. We left with 720g of brambles which isn't bad, enough for a crumble anyway! Despite many a stray thorn and nettle stings (I managed to get a nettle sting on my upper thigh), we had a most enjoyable forage and the weather was very nice for it. I even have two foraging converts which is always a good thing! So either today or tomorrow I'llbe making bramble crumble, although I need to find somewhere I can pick a few cooking apples. Failing that I'm sure I could use a few normal ones.
Oh, and I'm also excited because I finally learned to knit in the round using double pointed needles. I've been meaning to teach myself for ages and finally got round to it on Friday. So I'm currently knitting a pair of wrist warmers since I lost my old pair. After that I'll move onto socks. But It's good to be knitting again, and I want to learn more crochet stitches as well so I can crochet more than just soft toys.
For now I'm going to go and make a cup of tea. My hips and legs are in much pain and I think a nice cup of tea will help. |

| Happy Thanksgiving! |
[Oct. 11th, 2008|03:26 pm] |
I should have posted this a few weeks ago, but I forgot and given that it's Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, the time seemed right.
For any fellow Canadian ex-pats who didn't know, SPAR is now selling Tim Hortons donuts. And coffee. And hot chocolate.
(At least, the one on Lindsay Road in Leith is selling them.)
The maple dip tastes almost exactly right. |

| Hot stone massage, and the Edinburgh Floatarium |
[Oct. 10th, 2008|08:12 pm] |
Can anyone recommend a nice place in or near the City Centre to get a hot stone massage? I want to get my boyfriend a treatment voucher for his birthday but don't know where would be good to send him!
Along the same lines, has anyone here ever been to the Edinburgh Floatarium in Stockbridge for a treatment? They seem to have a good range of therapies on offer but the shop front puts me off - it seems like a tacky 'new age' shop and doesn't appear very professional. Has anyone got any experiences to share? |

I'm doing a clearout of a huge pile of old vinyl that I never play any more, so if anyone is interested in buying large (or indeed small) amounts of late 90s/early 2000s British & European clanky techno (Cluster, Hydraulix, Glenn Wilson, Adam Beyer, Cari Lekebusch etc), jump-up Drum & Bass or hardhouse, drop me a line at phil@mrzero.co.uk to arrange a rummage. |

Edinburgh Winter Festival Magazine are looking for quotes/stories from Edinburgh residents on the official Hogmanay/Winter Wonderland/German Fair extravaganza, and I wanted to ask if any of the Burgers had a good one.
For example, we have one lady who met her true love at the German market and they're now married; another makes sure to eat the amazing fried potato+pickle+sourcream omg yum thing as much as possible, another takes his whole family down to the ice rink and yet another arrived in Edinburgh for the first time, caught the bus from the airport, fell asleep and opened his eyes just as he was driven past the sparkly sight. Not bad, eh?
So do any of you have a good memory or 'I love the Winter Festival because...' quote they would like to contribute? The hard bit is that I need a head and shoulders shot of you outside, during daylight, but am planning on hitting the streets again tomorrow, and am happy to nip here, there and everywhere and go 'click' - and then your smiling face appears on hundreds of thousands of brochures :) (I also wander round with a basket of muffins as an incentive/thank you!)
Thanks in advance, xx |

| Laptop Repairs |
[Oct. 9th, 2008|08:18 pm] |
My laptop is dead. The power and disc lights are lit, the fan is spinning but there is no video, either on the screen or via the VGA.
Ideas anyone?
Anyone know where I might get a repair on reasonable terms?

| Glasses while I wait? |
[Oct. 9th, 2008|06:14 pm] |
Hello good people of Edinburgh,
Is there anywhere in town that can repair the glasses I have terminally chipped while I wait? The last time I was without specs I walked into a lamppost (Yes, I am that blind) and don't want to repeat the experience.
The chip in my glasses is too big not to fix and I really don't want to have to go and buy a new pair. Sadly, I don't have a spare pair I can use while these are being fixed.
Any ideas?
Thanks! |
