220 - Two for the Road (An Ana-Lucia Episode)

Major Plotpoints

-- Kate and Jack bring Michael back to the hatch. After regaining consciousness, Michael tells them that the Others are weak and barely armed and that, once he gets his strength back, they can go and get Walt back from Them.
-- Before the crash, Ana and her mother had a falling out. When Jason Adler showed up dead, Teresa knew Ana did it and tried to help her daughter, but Ana refused to let her do so. She quit her job at the police station and became an airport security guard. One day, she met Christian, who hired her as a bodyguard for his trip to Australia. They went under the aliases of Sarah and Tom. For several days in Australia, Christian did nothing but drink. Finally, one night, he got into a yelling match with a woman named Lindsey about seeing his daughter. Ana tried to get him to go home with her, but he told her he couldn’t apologize to his son, so he stayed behind. Just before boarding Flight 815, Ana called her mother and they reconciled. Teresa told her she’d be there when she landed.
-- Ana tries to get Henry to talk, but it backfires when he tries to kill her. Locke saves her and Ana vows revenge.
-- Henry tells Locke that when Danielle caught him in her net, he was on his way to their camp to get Locke.
-- Sayid tells Hurley about the beach he and Shannon had a meal on and Hurley decides to take Libby there for a surprise date. However, while he’s packing for it, Libby finds him and figures it out. He tries to keep the beach a surprise, but ends up not being able to find it. Libby then realizes that he forgot drinks and blankets, so she tells him to get some wine from Rose and Bernard and she’ll get some blankets from the hatch.
-- Ana and Sawyer sleep together, although Ana merely does so to get Sawyer’s gun to kill Henry.
-- Locke, Jack, and Kate leave the hatch to get the guns back from Sawyer. Ana stays behind to watch after Michael. When they reach Sawyer, he realizes that Ana stole his gun. Locke realizes that she took it to kill Henry and they all run to the hatch to stop her.
-- Ana tries to kill Henry, but she can’t do it. Michael comes to her and she relates her story to him. He tells her that he’ll take the gun and kill Henry for her. She hands it to him and he instead shoots her in the chest. She dies. At the same time, Libby comes down to get the blankets and sees what happened, so Michael shoots her twice in the stomach. He then opens the armory door, turns the gun on himself, and pulls the trigger.

---

Kate is kneeling beside Michael. She asks Jack what’s wrong with him. He says nothing, so she looks up to find him walking towards the direction Michael came from. Where is he going? Maybe They just let him go, Jack says. Let him go? He’s alone. They didn’t just push him out into the jungle, Jack. He’s alone! Okay, time to go. He lifts Michael up over his shoulder and carries him back to camp.

Ana slices some fruit up in the hatch. She glances over at Locke, who’s snoring on the bunk bed. FLASHBACK. Ana and her partner pull into the police station. Her partner tells her goodbye and leaves her. Her mother comes up to her and asks her where she was last night. Home. All night? Yeah, cooked herself some dinner, watched some TV. What’d she watch? Ana says nothing. Why don’t they go for a drive? They end up at the morgue—looking at the body of Jason Adler. Remember him? Found him in a parking lot just after three in the morning. Dead an hour before anyone saw him. Crime scene pulled a gun from the dumpster—registration was filed off, no prints, no witnesses. He was executed. Any idea who did it? Yeah, says Captain Cortez. Ana did. He confesses to shooting her in cold blood and she refuses to ID him, so they had to cut him loose. A week later he shows up with five bullets in his chest because she shot him in cold blood. Guess she should get a lawyer, Ana says. Look, they both know this is going to be a dead-end investigation, Teresa says. But Ana... If she did this, she has to let her help her. Yeah, thanks, Mom; she doesn’t need her help. She doesn’t want her help, she’s going to have to get it from somewhere else. She’s a police officer. If she doesn’t respect Teresa, at least respect that. Ana pulls her badge off of her uniform and hands it to her mom. Then she quits.

Ana enters the armory. She picks up a bowl of uneaten food and swaps it with a new one. How long is he going to keep up this hunger strike? He says nothing. She ever tell him she was a cop? She’s been around a lot of killers in her life. Know what surprises her most about them? How much they love to talk. But he’s different. Hmm? Quiet. Henry whispers something unintelligible and Ana asks him what he said. He repeats it a couple more times. Ana gets in his face. If he’s going to say something, he’s going to have to speak up. Henry suddenly stands and knocks Ana back. He grabs her and starts to strangle her. She killed two of Them, he says—good people who were leaving her alone. She’s the killer. They struggle, but he pins her. It’s nearly the end for Ana, but Locke suddenly comes up from behind and hits Henry in the back of the head with his crutch, knocking him out. Ana falls onto the ‘bed’ and regains her breath. Locke looks at her. Guess Henry decided to start talking, huh?

FLASHBACK. Ana’s working at a security check-point at an airport. Later, she heads to the airport bar and asks for a tequila-tonic. Beside her, Christian Shepard starts to talk to her. Long day, huh? She says nothing. Good to see her again, he says. She wanded him at security, he explains. He asks the bartender for another drink. So, how does on get into wanding? One stops being a cop. What a coincidence, he just stopped being a doctor. Why’d he quit? He didn’t. His son ratted him out for drinking on the job. Lost his license. Ana chuckles. Yeah, he knows, it’s hilarious. No, no, it’s just that she doesn’t think parents and their kids should work together—too many issues. He’ll drink to that. So, where’s he headed? Sydney. Sydney, Australia. She want to come? He’s serious. Why would she go to Sydney with him? Maybe fate has just thrown the two of them together. Two drinks in an airport bar—why would fate do that? Same reason fate does anything—so that they can help each other out. She does need help, right? Unless she doesn’t. What she’s doing down there could be a little dangerous and he needs someone to protect him—a bodyguard. It’s perfect for someone who stopped being a cop. Ana is silent for a minute, then chuckles. She doesn’t even know his name. How about they don’t use real names? Tell her what—why doesn’t she pick a name for him and then he’ll pink one for her. He looks like a Tom, she says. Tom, what an excellent name. And she should be a—Sarah. He raises his glass. Australia.

Ana tends to a wound on her forehead. Libby finds her and asks what happened. She cut herself shaving, Ana says. Libby doesn’t reply. The guy in the hatch tried to kill her, she explains. She okay? She’s fine; but he won’t be. Hey, Ana? What? Don’t do anything stupid.

Locke examines the blast door in the ceiling of the hatch. Then he unlocks the armory door. If he’s come to apologize, Henry says, he forgives him for hitting him with his crutch. He’s so glad his head didn’t break it. Why? Now that’s a broad question, Henry points out. Why’d he try to hurt Ana-Lucia, but not him? He’s not sure what he’s getting at. He was trapped under that blast door, Locke says, helpless. He could’ve crushed his skull, but he didn’t do a thing. Why didn’t he? Because he’s one of the good ones. What? Good what? None of this matters, says Henry. He’s dead anyway. The doctor’s gone to make a trade and they both know he’ll come back empty-handed and then he’s lost his value. So either Jack comes back here and kills him or his people find out where he’s being held and They do it. Why would his own people want to kill him? Because the man in charge—he’s a great man, John, a brilliant man—but he’s not a forgiving man. He’ll kill Henry because he failed, John. He failed his mission. What mission? When that woman caught him in his tarp, he was on his way there. He was coming for Locke. Locke, shocked, stares at Henry. Suddenly, Kate’s and Jack’s voices call out for him from somewhere else inside the hatch. Locke leaves the armory and locks Henry back inside.

Sawyer’s climbing trees, using a stick to get mangos from them. Ana enters and picks some up. Hey, he says, he’s been knocking those things down for twenty minutes. Get her hands off of his damn mangos. She didn’t figure him for the fruit picking type. What does she want? She needs a gun. Well, here’s an idea—why not go to her buddy, Jack? He’s got himself a gun. Oh, that’s right; he’s still traipsing around the jungle with Kate. If he’s got a problem because Jack’s making time with his girlfriend, don’t take it out on her. How about he just gives her a gun? Here’s another idea—scram.

FLASHBACK. Ana gets out of a bed in Sydney. She grabs a drink before there’s a knock on the door. She opens it to find Christian—“Tom.” Sarah, he says. It’s time—protection duty. Come on. After four days of drinking and doing nothing, she says, now in the middle of the night, he’s ready to go? That’s exactly right. It’s time, come on. Fate’s calling, Sarah. They get in a car and drive in the pouring rain. Christian tells her to pull over in front of a house. This is what he needed protection for—the suburbs? Stay in the car, he says. Should she keep the meter running? Christian goes to the house and knocks on the door while Ana watches from the car. The door opens and a Patsy Cline song comes out from the house. Christian says he just wants to see his daughter. She’s his daughter and he has every right to see her. Lindsey, the woman at the door, tells him he doesn’t have a right. Now get out. She tries to close the door, but Christian tries to push it open and get inside. Ana runs over. He pays mortgage on this house—he wants to see his daughter. Ana pulls him back. What the hell is wrong with him? Lindsey tells him not to ever come back. Ana pulls him into the car. He was just having a conversation with the lady, he says. From the house, Lindsey yells out. He needs help!

Hurley approaches Sayid, who’s digging near the tents. Nice hole, he says. What is it, Hurley? Hey, man, remember that radio they made? He’s thinking maybe he could get it to play some music. For Libby. Well, it worked only once and then just for a minute. He’s tried several times since and only gotten static. Here’s the thing—even that would be good—because then Libby would be like, “It’s the thought that counts”—and he’ll score major points. Especially when she sees him holding it over his head. And why would he hold a static generating radio over his head? They didn’t have “Say Anything” in Baghdad? It’s awesome. This dude, like, gets him boombox and he holds it over his head outside this chick’s window and he plays some Peter Gabriel song for her and bam, the girl’s, like, his. After her dad goes to jail, that is. But then he gets her. Sayid smiles. He thinks he gets the idea. Hurley tells him he should really check it out sometime—if they ever get off the island, of course. If he really wants to do something nice for Libby, Sayid says, there’s a beautiful beach three kilometers from there. He could take her there. He think she’d like that? Sayid smiles and stares past Hurley. He took Shannon there once.

Jack examines a still unconscious Michael in the hatch. Locke enters. So, it worked? What is he talking about? His deal—the trade. If They gave them Michael—They didn’t give them anything. So, it was just a coincidence that he came wandering out? He was shouting—he heard his voice. What, They just let Michael go, hoping they would keep up their end of the bargain? He think they’re on the honor system? Locke says nothing.

Sawyer’s walking through the jungle. He hears rustling and stops. Come out, come out, whoever you are. He knows they’re there. He draws his gun. Don’t make him come in after them. Ana clears her throat. Well, well, well, what has he got there? Was little red riding hood going to follow the big bad wolf back to his big old stash-o-guns? Why doesn’t he give her that one, right there? He ain’t going to give her nothing. She approaches in a threatening manner. They’ve been through this, Lucy. She takes a swing and he blocks her, laughing. She takes him down and he gets on top of her. What’s she gonna go now? After a moment of nothing, Ana kisses him and they eagerly start ripping off each other’s clothes. Sawyer throws his shirt off to the side, the gun resting neatly on top.

FLASHBACK. Ana and Christian are in the car. Christian reaches for the radio. They need some damn music in there. Who is she? Who is who? That woman. She is a very long story, Sarah. It’s Ana-Lucia. Well, he’s still Tom. He’s pathetic, that’s what he is, she says. Bet her sweet ass he is. Ana stops the car. Why is he there? He’s there because he can’t apologize to his son. He tries to help him, so he thanked him by cutting him off. He thanked him by hating him. She came here for the same reason he did, kiddo. She ran away. Christian notices a bar in the background. Look what fate has delivered up this time. Come on. They should go have a drink or ten and be pathetic together. What does she say? No. No. It’s her call. He opens his car door and slams into a passing Sawyer. Hey, he’s walking there! Wait, Ana says. Don’t. Just get the hell out of Sydney. Just go. Go back. He can’t ever go back, he tells her. See ya, kiddo.

Ana puts her shirt on as Sawyer watches. What? Doesn’t she want his phone number? He tells anyone about this and she’ll kill him, she says. She leaves. Sawyer looks after her. Guess that takes cuddling off the table.

Hurley puts some food from the beach pantry into his pack. Libby appears and asks him how it’s going. This isn’t what it looks like, he says immediately. And, what does it look like? It looks like something that it’s not. Aw, man. He’s so busted. Hurley, she’s not there to tell him how to act around food. Naw, he’s not busted for that. He’s busted for something else. He was packing a picnic because he was kind of hoping that she’s want to go with him. But it was a surprise. Really? That’s very sweet. So, she want to go? Where to? Can that part still be a surprise? Libby smiles.

Jack cleans some scissors. Locke’s reading in the background. Ana enters. Hey, he’s back, she says. Hey. So, the Others—They didn’t show up? No. Michael’s back, though. He notices the cut on Ana’s forehead. What happened? His fault, Locke says. He left the tap on in the bathroom sink and Ana wiped out and hit her head on the bathroom counter. And he’s sorry, again. Yeah, don’t worry about it, she says. Kate calls out to Jack. She thinks Michael’s waking up. They all head to Michael’s bed. He stirs. Jack? Hey, man. Wait a minute—how did he get...? Wait, try to take it easy, okay. He’s back in the hatch. They found him out in the jungle last night. Oh, his head. Welcome back, Locke says. Hey, John. He found Them. After he left he hiked north back to where they were. He looks at Ana. He hiked to the beach—followed the shoreline. A day later he saw one. What did he looks like? Dirty, worn clothing, no shoes, simple. Just like the rest of Them. The rest of Them? Yeah, his people—the Others. He followed him back to his camp. They live in tents—canvas tents and teepees. They eat dried fish. They’re worse off than they are. How many of Them were there? He counted 22. And the boat? He didn’t see it. Did he see Walt? No, but he knows he’s there. What about everyone else they took? Cindy? Did he see any other kids? No, no, no kids, no. But he thinks They were in the same place as his boy. They have a hatch. How does he know that They—there’s a set of metal doors leading underground. What else could it be? And he thinks that’s where They’re keeping the kids? They keep it guarded 24/7. Two guards, two guns. And two guns is all he saw. They’re barely armed. Most of Them are old and half of Them are women. He wanted—he couldn’t save him. So he came back to tell them—tell them that they can take Them. As soon as he gets his strength back, he’ll take them back there. And they are going to get his boy back.

Locke’s writing in the computer room. Jack enters and tells him he was right. Right about what? About Henry—what he and Sayid did to him when they first found him. He was right. He doesn’t like how he did it, but he shouldn’t have gotten in his way. Well, he did what he thought was right at the time he thought it. He just hopes that next time he decides to do something, he includes Locke. And something tells him that’s going to be soon. He heard Michael, Jack says. They can take Them. Their friend with the beard told them not to cross the line. These people are liars, John. Why should They take there word on anything? He couldn’t agree more. So, now what? Jack and Locke enter the living area and start getting a pack together. Where are they going? To get their guns back from Sawyer, Locke tells Kate. They’re going to need her to help convince him. Who’s going to take care of Michael? Ana tells them she’ll stay. She sure? Give Sawyer her best. Alright, they’ll be back soon.

Hurley and Libby are walking through the jungle. Hurley tells her to watch her head. Almost there, he says. He ever watch the Flintstones? Sure, he used to watch it all the time when he was in the hospital—when he broke his hip. Well, did he ever notice how Fred would run by the same thing over and over again? She stops and points. Third time past this tree. Uh, that’s a different tree, Hurley says. It’s okay if he’s lost, she tells him. He’s not lost. Will she trust him? He starts walking again. They’re right about to walk on the most excellent secret beach on the island, and—surprise! Uh, Hurley? This is their beach. There’s Jin. Hurley’s face falls. Tell him what—why not have the picnic there? Come on, give her the blankets. Blankets? He doesn’t have any blankets? How about drinks? Hurley doesn’t say anything. Okay, tell him what—she’ll handle the blankets. He can track down Rose and Bernard. She saw them pull wine from the pallet, okay? Oh, wine. Groovy. Hey, maybe if he gets drunk enough he’ll remember where he knows her from. Yeah, okay. She leaves. Jin stops fishing for a minute and gives Hurley a thumbs-up.

Sawyer’s outside his tent, reading the Bad Twin manuscript. Jack, Locke, and Kate find him. Jack tells him to put the book down. It’s not a book, it’s a manuscript. He’s about to be the first and only guy to find out who done it. He thinks he’s got it figured out. Cool his damn jets and walk around the coconut trees. He’s got, like, ten pages left. Jack grabs the manuscript and drops the end into the fire near Sawyer. Hey! He want to figure it out? Sawyer pulls the manuscript out of the fire. What is his problem? It’s time to give them the guns back. He burns the ending of his book and now he wants—where are they, James? Sawyer stares at Locke. Him too? Just take them there, Sawyer, alright? Quit playing around. What, they bring her along for a sympathy vote? She’s not in his head. Why don’t they just go play in the jungle, huh? Jack draws hi gun. Take them to the guns, now. Sawyer reaches behind to draw his own gun and realizes it’s missing. That bitch, he says. She stole his damn gun—Ana-Lucia. Why would she need a gun? Son of a bitch! In the hatch, Ana pulls the gun out of her boot. Back on the beach, Locke’s eyes get wide and he looks at Jack. He needs to tell him something.

Ana opens the armory door. She slides the Swiss army knife to Henry. Pick it up, she says. Cut himself loose. What? Just do it. Why? He knows why. Henry cuts himself free. He kept saying she was misunderstood, he says. What is he talking about? Goodwin. Yes, he told Them all about her—how he thought she was worthy, and that he could change her. But he was wrong. And it cost him his life. He was going to kill her, Ana says. Was he? Is he done? Yes, Ana, he’s done. Ana draws her gun and points it at his head. So, this is, huh? Yes, Henry. This is it.

FLASHBACK. Jack’s at the airport in Sydney, arguing with the agent about his father’s body. Ana watches him from the line, not knowing his dead father is the reason she’s there. She dials a number on her cell phone. That was an airplane, she says a bit later into the phone. No, she’s not at work. She’s in Sydney. That’s right, Australia. She—she doesn’t know—she, she made a mistake. Mom. She knew, so she got as far away from her as she could. But now—she wants to come home, Mom. So come home, Teresa says. Ana starts to cry a little. She’s on Oceanic flight 815. She’ll be there when she lands, mija.

Ana plays with the gun while sitting on the sofa in the hatch. Michael enters and asks where everybody is. What he said got them worked up, she says. They went to get all the guns back from Sawyer. Sawyer? Sawyer has all the guns? Long story. At least he didn’t get that one, he says. Yeah. Too bad she can’t use it. Use it on what? They caught one of Them—the Others. He’s locked up in the armory. How long has he—over a week. And they’re, what—taking care of him? He tried to kill her today, she reveals. So she wanted him dead. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t even kill him. He looked at him and he—she can’t do it anymore. Michael remains silent for a moment. Then let him do it. They’re animals. He’s seen these people and They’re animals. They took his son—right out of his hands—They took his son and—he’ll do it. Give him the gun. He’ll kill him. Because that’s what They do. Ana hands him the gun. What’s the combination? 18 right, 1 left, 31 right, she says. Michael holds the gun in his hands and stares at it for a very long time. Then he says he’s sorry. For what? He turns and shoots Ana in the chest. She looks down at the wound and at Michael, shocked. Then her hands fall limply by her sides and she dies. Michael?! Michael, surprised, turns and sees Libby standing there, holding the blankets. He shoots her twice in the stomach and she falls over. He then goes to the armory door and stares at Henry for a long moment. Then he raises the gun, points it at himself, and pulls the trigger.

Two for the Road was written by Elizabeth Sarnoff and Christina M. Kim.
