216 - The Whole Truth (A Sun Episode)

Mini Cap: Sun has an internal conflict with herself when she finds out new information—she’s pregnant. She wrestles with telling Jin about it, and, after the pushing of Jack, she tells him. He is overjoyed and they reconcile their problems to share in the joy of having a new baby. Meanwhile, Locke gets Ana to have a chat with Henry to try and find out new information. She convinces him to draw a map to his balloon and she, Charlie, and Sayid head off to find out if he’s telling the truth. They end up in the clearing Henry sent them to, with no smiley-face balloon in sight. Sayid insists he’s lying, but Ana convinces him to search the whole clearing to make sure. In the hatch, Henry accidentally lets slip about his map to Locke and Jack. When he sees their shocked faces, he says that, if he was one of Them—the people they seem to think are their enemies—there wouldn’t be a balloon. He’d lead them to a really secluded place for an ambush by his people. Then They’d use Ana and crew to trade for him. And Locke and Jack share frightful glances when Henry smiles.
This week’s flashbacks center on Sun. She and Jin were trying to conceive for a year or so—and nothing was working. They went to a fertility doctor, who told them that Sun could not have children. Jin became furious at her. Sun then went to Jae’s hotel room, but not for the obvious reason—he was the one who taught her English so she could move to America. Later, the doctor found Sun and told her that she wasn’t the one couldn’t have children—Jin was.
---
Sun looks herself over in the bathroom mirror. Jin asks her if she's coming to bed. She'll be right there. She comes into the hall in a sexy nightie. He tells her she looks great. She smiles. Oh, come on. Turn around. Honey—come one. Please? She does a little spin for him and goes to the bed, where they kiss. Did she take her temperature? She sighs. Isn't that romantic. He's sorry. It's just—they've been trying for a year. He thinks they should see a doctor. A doctor? A fertility doctor. Why does he care so much about a baby he wouldn't even see? Don't blame his work, Sun. He works so they can—work? When a man comes home with blood on his hands, that isn't work. And why does she think he comes home with blood on his hands? He has blood on his hands because of her father. Because of what he makes him do! Sun turns on her side on the bed and begins to cry. Jin gets out of bed and goes to the window. He didn't mean to—he's really sorry. He turns and gets in bed next to her. Maybe if they had a baby her father might change his mind. Maybe if they gave him a grandchild he'd give him a safer job. A baby will change everything. A baby will make it better.
On the island, Sun works in her garden. She hears rustling in the bushes and becomes frightened, then sighs when Jin comes out. He scared her, she tells him. Des she know how long he's been looking for her? What is she doing out there? What does he mean? She's working in her garden. Come with him, they're going back. What? No. They're going, now. He grabs her by the arm and pulls her up to make her come. She jerks away. What?! The Others attacked her there. They talked about this! Now. He grabs her and pulls again, and once more she pulls away. She doesn't need him to protect her. She's just working in her garden. What? Her garden? He starts uprooting the plants and she yells at him to stop. Now she has no reason to be out there, he says. Shall they go back now? Without a word, Sun pushes past him and goes back towards the beach.
Ana runs toward the cluster of tents on the beach to find Locke sitting under a tree, eating a banana. She was running like the devil was chasing her, he tells her. Maybe he is, she replies. Good for her, keeping in shape. What does he want? He looks hurt. What does he want? She's been there over a week—he's never said two words to her. And now he's sitting outside her tent? They've got a man locked up down in the hatch, he tells her. There's a possibility he's one of Them—the Others. Who's 'they'? Locke and Jack. He's keeping watch right now. How long's he been down there? Three days. He'd like her to talk with him. She's had experience with the Others. She was a cop. Seems to him she's the most qualified to figure out if he's telling the truth? Does Jack know he's coming to her with this? They're got a serious problem—all of them. He's taking the necessary steps to solve it. He doesn't need Jack's permission to talk with her because now, there's a man sitting in his hatch and he wants him out.
Sun walks toward the beach from the jungle. She comes across a tree and stops in pain as Rose and Bernard argue a little ways away. They spot Sun and Rose asks her if she's okay. Yeah, she just thinks she's a little lightheaded. She looks as pale as sheet. Well, give her some water. Yes, ma'am. Rose tells Sun not to pay Bernard any mind. He's just mad at the world because he forgot her birthday. He didn't forget! He doesn't even know what day of the week it is. It's Saturday, Bernard. She asks Sun if she can walk. Really, she's fine. Maybe they should go get Jin? No, Sun says immediately. She was just out in the sun too long. Well, she spent a lot of time around the baby—maybe she caught something. At least talk to Jack. Really, she's okay. Thanks. She heads off.
FLASHBACK. Sun stealthily enters a hotel room, putting the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door. She turns around and smiles at Jae. He asks her if there was traffic. Just the usual, she tells him, taking off her coat. Does he know she's there? No. He thought she was going to tell him. She couldn't. She drops her coat and their eyes meet as they both bend down to pick it up. She's glad he was able to get away, she tells him. Just one of te perks of being the general manager and the hotel owner's only son—flexible hours. The room's not too shabby, either. Can he get her a drink? Just some iced-tea, please. In English, he tells her sternly. With some difficulty, Sun tells him she would like iced-tea, please. Very good. Thank you. Back in Korean, he asks her if she's alright. She's fine. Does she want to talk about it? Not really. Well, if she changes her mind—not that he's the one to come to for relationship advice—but he thinks Jin would proud that she can speak English. And what does she tell him when he asks how she learned? Or who she learned from? If she's uncomfortable with the arrangement, they can stop. Is that what he wants? No. He smiles. It's good practice for him, too.
Jack hops out of the shower in the hatch and Locke tells him good morning. Confused and surprised, Jack finds him shaving. He couldn't wait until he was done? The steam opens up his pores. A man's got no shaving cream, he's go to improvise. He also thought it might be a good time to talk about their problem. Their problem? Their Henry problem. They've had him locked up for three days now, and he can't help but get the sense that he's just not motivated to cooperate with them. And how are they going to motivate him? He doesn't think there's anything they can do. He thinks they need to bring in some new blood. Obviously, he has someone in mind. What does he think about Ana-Lucia? Why her? She's the one he went to to start an army to fight the Others—why not her? Unless he's worried about whayt she'll do to him. He'll talk to her. He already did. Locke finishes shaving and looks at Jack. She's in there with him now.
Henry asks Ana if she was on the plane, too. She was in the tail section. They crashed on the other side of the island. She walked all the way there? That must have been fun. It had its moments. So, is he going to tell her his story? Why bother, he's already told it to everyone—Jack, Locke, the big black guy who cut off his bear in front of him. Oh, yeah, and his buddy, Sayid. She can see how much he liked his story. So how about he tries her. He doesn't mean to be ungrateful, but why is she going to help him get out of there? On the other side of the island there was this guy with them. She was 100 percent convinced that he wasn't on the plane. So she dug a hole and threw him in it. And what happened? She was wrong. And now he's dead. But good news for Henry—she doesn't make the same mistake twice. So about he tells her his story?
Sun approaches Sawyer as he reads a book using his new glasses. What can he do for her? How's his book? Predictable—not nearly enough sex. She smiles. She heard that he has all the medical supplies. She heard correct, he tells her, closing the book and sitting up. May she look through them? He chuckles. No she may not. But if she tells him what she's looking for—forget it. She turns around and starts to leave., but he goes after her. Hold on. Now he's intrigued. Tell her what, tell him what she's looking for and it's hers, gratis. Can't she just look herself? It's not a drugstore, Sunshine. She checks the surrounding area to make sure no one's too close. She needs a pregnancy test.
Locke is listening to music while Jack stands at the armory door. He can't hear anything, he says. Ana's only been in there about thirty minutes. How does he know he hasn't snapped her neck, John? How does he know she hasn't snapped his?
In the armory, Henry has just finished telling Ana his story. So let her get this straight—him and his wife travel around the world and crash there in a smiley-face balloon? Then she dies, he gets captured by a French chick who brings him there, and then they lock him up. It sounds kind of silly when she says it like that, he remarks. Why doesn't he have a beard? Because he shaved—because he needed something normal. Okay, so why doesn't he draw a map to his balloon? They'll go out there, they'll find it, and everybody will believe him. That's what they all keep wanting him to do—draw a map. And if he messes up they'll crucify him. He flew around the world in a balloon and he doesn't think he can draw up a good map? Air travel—it's a different animal. It's about wind currents and—does he or does he not know where it is? Yeah, he knows where it is. He went back there to bury his wife. Why'd he do that? Because their balloon was the closest thing they had to a home. They've been looking for someone to punish for everything that's happened to them—someone to blame—and now they've got him. It doesn't matter what he does, he's already dead. Ana gets in his face. He draws that map and she'll find his balloon. But if he doesn't, things are going to play out just like he said.
Sun stealthily walks through the jungle. She stops and pulls out the pregnancy test. Suddenly Hurley comes out of the trees holding a partially eaten Apollo bar. Sun quickly hides the test behind her back and Hurley gets panicky. Hey, look what he found in the middle of the jungle! It's not even melted or nothing. Crazy, huh? She want to split it? No. No, thanks. She, uh, she was just heading to the beach. Okay, well, um., later. He runs off.
FLASHBACK. Jin and Sun are sitting in a doctor's office. The doctors enters and apologizes for the wait. He asks Sun how her father is. Well, thanks. Please give him his regards. Of course. And thanks for seeing them so fast. Jin interrupts, asking the doctor if he has the results. He's afraid the news is not good. The ultrasound showed advanced endometriosis—scar tissue—blocking the fallopian tubes. He's afraid that, even with surgery, the chances of conceiving are... impossible. Both Jin and Sun's faces fall. Can't he fic it? There must be something he can do, Jin says. He's afraid not. He's sorry. Jin suddenly turns to Sun. Did she know about that before they got married? What? She must have had some idea. Why would he keep something like that from him? Oh, yes, she was trying to trap the son of a fisherman! Jin looses his temper and pushes a stack of papers off of the doctor's desk and onto the floor before storming out. Sun gives the man an apologetic look.
Ana bangs on the armory door to get out. Jack opens the door for her. He told her the same story he told them, she says. Locke asks if she believes him. He doesn't know yet. He needs more time with him. He's all hers. Tomorrow. She wants to give him some time to think. She turns to Jack. If that's okay with him. He didn't tell anyone, Ana. No worries, man.
Sayid and Charlie are building something out of bamboo on the beach. A bit large for a dining room table, isn't it? If they cut them in two, it will suit the purpose, Sayid tells him. Ana enters and asks Sayid if she can talk to him. Of course. Alone? Whatever she needs to say she can say it there. It's about the hatch. Charlie speaks up. She mean the guy locked in the closet there? What about him? Ana pulls a map out of her pocket and hands it to Sayid. It's to his balloon. How did he get him to do it? She asked nicely. Do Jack and Locke know about it? Jack and Locke are a little too busy worrying about Locke and Jack. All she wants to know is if he's telling the truth. Why come to him? Judging from what he did to his face, that's what he wants, too. He looks over the map. This is at least a day's walk. Then they should get going.
Ana, Sayid, and Charlie are walking across a stream. Charlie stumbles and Ana reaches to help. He okay? He's alright. Thanks. They continue walking and see a cliff in the distance. Sayid points. That cliff appears to be this—he points to a spot on the map. Score one for Henry, Ana says. Pointing out geographical touchstone does not mean he's leading them to a balloon. Maybe not, but at least they're on the right island. Sayid walks off. Humor's not his strong suit, Charlie tells Ana. She stares at him. And he's saying this to her... They continue walking and Charlie looks around to find Ana staring at him. She looking at his bum? No, she's looking at his gun. His what? Maybe he should give the gun to somebody who knows how to use it. Maybe he will. As he recalls, the last time she had a gun, she murdered someone. Sayid stops them and tells them that's enough. Charlie takes the gun out and starts to hand it to Ana, but just before she grabs it, he gives it to Sayid with a smile at her. Sayid tells them they'll go as far as the base of the cliff and camp there.
Sun and Kate are sitting on the beach. Kate holds the instructions to the pregnancy test*. How long is it supposed to take? Uh, up to two minutes. She's sorry—she just... She knows. Where did Sawyer find one of those, anyway? Who flies with a pregnancy test, right? Has she ever taken one? Kate looks at the sand. Yeah. Thanks for waiting with her and not asking why she's there and not Jin. She's welcome. It's time. Sun closes her eyes and flips the test over in her hand. It's got two pink lines. She's pregnant. Is it 100 percent sure? There's only one way to find out.
Jack looks over the pregnancy test. They're pretty accurate. A false negative in the first maybe, but a positive is a positive. But it's impossible, Sun says. Oh, it's possible. She feeling queasy, lightheaded? Please, Jack. It's private, no one can know. She's not going to tell Jin? In time she will, it's just—it's complicated. As complicated as Jin being the last one on the island to find out she spoke English? Sun, his advice—and it's just that because he's the last person to ask about this, but—she should tell him. And when she does she should tell him everything—the whole truth. He's going to get back to the hatch. Congratulations, Sun. Kate points out that he's been down at the hatch a lot. Everything okay? Yeah, everything's fine. He leaves and Kate turns to Sun. She okay?
FLASHBACK. Sun is once again with Jae. They are speaking English. He asks her if she's alright. Yes, she's fine. She was distracted for their entire lesson. She's not fine. They—Jin and her went to see a doctor. He said she cannot have children. He's very sorry, Sun. She was glad. In Korean, Jae asks Sun why they're there. Because he's teaching her English. She's been practically fluent for a month now. Why is she learning English? Because she's moving to America. Jin. She's going to leave him. He ran away to America for a woman because he thought he was in love. But she can't run away from her life. And Jin? Is he her life? She should stay because—Jae cuts her off and gets close to her. He's not saying she should stay for Jin.
Sayid sits at a campfire while Charlie sleeps. Ana comes up to him. He mind? She sits down. She should sleep while she can. Yeah, she can't sleep. People don't like her, she confesses. She tried to get them to most of her life. Guess she just gave up a while back. She is what she is. But him—he's got a good reason to hate her. She's sorry. She's sorry for what she did. She was trying to protect her people, Sayid says. It wasn't her that killed Shannon. It was Them. And once they find out he is one of Them, then something will have to be done.
Ana wakes up to find Sayid staring at her. She nearly jumps out of her skin. What? Nothing. It's going to rain, she points out. They should get moving. Charlie enters the camp carrying some fruit. Morning! Who wants breakfast? He has papayas and papayas. Sayid and Ana stand up and walk past him. Right, why eat? The rain starts and they come to a large clearing. This balloon would be rather large, right? Sayid hits the paper in his hand. Why is he not surprised? They need to look some more, Ana says. That's where he said it would be. If she's going to back his play on this, they need to be sure. Fine. He'll divide the area into three grids, so search as thoroughly as she pleases.
Jin's fishing at the shore and Bernard is short ways away, struggling with his own net. Oh, for the love of—Jin puts down his net and says something to Bernard in Korean. Oh, no, no, no, it's not for fish. He says something else in Korean. No, no, no, oysters. He makes a gesture indicating a shell opening and picking something out. Pearl, for Rose. Ahhh. Pearl. Jin shakes his head. No oyster. No oyster there. Ah, of course not. Why would there be? Sawyer enters and greets Jin by calling him Daddio. Jin has no idea what he's talking about, as usual. Way to go, Papa-san. He didn't waste much time. Sawyer tells Bernard he'd give him a cigar, but he's fresh out. Sun's pregnant? Keep it down, Suzie. He doesn't think Jin Sr. knows yet. They continue talking, but all Jin hears is gibberish.**
Sun goes back to her garden to find Jin replanting the flowers. She asks him what he's doing. He's fixing a mistake, he tells her. He doesn't have to. Yes, he does. He needs her. What? He hates being like that. Fighting. And he can't—he can't talk to anyone. He can't understand them. He needs her. Jin, she—it's okay. He's sorry. It was wrong of him to—she's pregnant. What? She's—she's pregnant, Jin. He grins and joyfully hugs Sun, lifting her off the ground. She tells him to listen to her. What is it? There's something—there's something she needs to tell him.
FLASHBACK. Sun is walking her dog when a car pulls up beside her. Dr. Kim, the doctor she and Jin saw, calls her name from inside. He asks her if she will get in the car. What? Why? Please, he needs to speak with her. She's a bit freaked by him and starts walking off. He gets out of his car and stops her. Please! He's done something terrible. It's not her that can't have children. What? It's him. It's her husband. But why would he—he couldn't. He's so sorry. Her husband, he works for her father. If he told a man like him he couldn't—he would burn his practice to the ground! Why is he telling her this now? Because she deserves to know the truth.
Back in the garden, Jin looks stunned. He sits down in the dirt. Why didn't she tell him? How could she? If he can't—how can there be a baby? She swear to him that she has never been with another man. That is the truth. Jin takes a long pause. Then it's a miracle.
The two parents-to-be work in the garden together. If it's a boy, Jin says, he would like to use a character from his father's name. And perhaps one from her mother's, Sun adds. Can they tell people? Well, Jack and Kate already know. And Sawyer probably knows. Jin nods. Daddio. And Bernard knows, too. They'll be lucky if there's anyone left to tell. Is she ready for lunch? Shall they go back? She'd like to stay another twenty minutes or so—by herself. If that's alright with him. He sounds disappointed, but tells her that's fine. He'll see her back at the beach. She tells him she loves him. He stops in his tracks and kisses her. In English, he tells her he loves her. He leaves. Sun puts her hands on her belly and smiles.
Henry's reading the armory. Jack opens the door and asks him how his book is. He reads from it: 'Men reject their prophets and slay them, but they love their martyrs and honor those whom they have slain.' So what's the difference between a martyr and a prophet? Either way, Jack says, it sounds like you end up dead. That's the spirit. In the mood for some breakfast? Locke's getting out bowls and cereal when Jack leads Henry out of the armory. Locke looks surprised. Henry sees the computer room. What's the computer for? Nothing. Cereal? Wow, where'd they get cereal? It was down there all along. The pantry's full of food. How old is it? Neither responds. They don't know much, huh? He'd be asking all kinds of questions about all the stuff down there. They don't even seem that curious. Does he want the cereal or doesn’t he? He nods and Locke pouts him a bowl. This must be a reward for his good behavior, huh? Guess he earned himself some good will for finally drawing that map for Ana. What map? To his balloon. Jack rounds on Locke. Did he—no. Wow, they have some real trust issues, don't they? Guess it makes sense she didn't tell them, with the way they fight all the time. Of course, if he was one of Them—the people they seem to think are their enemies—what would he do? Well, there'd be no balloon, so he'd draw a map to a real secluded place like a cave or some underbrush—good place for a trap—an ambush. And when their friends got there a bunch of his people would be waiting for them. Then they'd use them to trade for him. Guess it's a good thing he's not one of Them, huh? He takes a bite of the cereal. Got any milk?
* Don't know what relevance this has at the moment, but the pregnancy test Sun used was manufactured by Widmore Inc, which is also the 'important building' featured in Fire + Water.
** The writers used Sawyer and Bernard's dialogue backwards to make it the 'gibberish' Jin hears. I don't have access to what they said exactly at the moment, but it was just them talking about Sun's pregnancy, nothing important. Just goes to show that writers recycle ideas for us.
The Whole Truth was written by Elizabeth Sarnoff and Christina M. Kim.
