Veronica didn’t know why she hadn’t thought of it sooner. She and Claire were identical twins. Sean loved Claire. All she had to do was send Claire out on some wild goose chase and convince Sean that she was Claire. She knew her sister wasn’t putting out, but Veronica was no fool. She would tell Sean she was finally ready, and surely he would love her after they had sex. He might be mad for a minute or so, but he’d get over it in no time. Yes, she thought, this is foolproof.

…

Angela couldn’t stop crying.
“Please just tell me what’s going on,” her sister Marie pleaded. “You said an old gypsy woman cursed you and said your life would be ruined when you turned eighteen. You’re now twenty-four and felt compelled to tell your only sister just now.”
“Don’t we have another sister?” Angela asked with a sniffle.
“No, sweetheart, we have a brother,” Marie said in what she hoped was a concerned tone.
“Oh,” Marie said.
“Anyway, the curse?”
“Oh, yes. It’s ruining my life! It makes me fall instantly in love with people or things for random ten-minute intervals! It can strike at any time with anyone. I was once engaged to our ficus tree for seven minutes.”
“Why seven minutes?”
“It took three minutes to propose,” she said, her mind already drifting back to that fateful day.
“Angela, that’s crazy. I don’t believe it,” Marie said. She stood up and marched across the room.
“You have to believe me,” Angela cried. “Today I had sex with Alexander Greene, the richest man in town because I believed I was in love with him. He had a gunshot wound, and I could have lost my job.”
“You’re the worst nurse ever,” her sister pointed out.
“I’m never going to find real love,” Angela wailed. Marie rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, striking a put-upon pose.

…

Jack was haunted by her face. Angela. Angela. Angela. Angela. Was there ever such a perfect name in all of history?
“You seem distracted,” Lily announced.
“What’s that, my darling?” Jack asked, proving her point.
“Let’s talk about our future,” Lily suggested. She just adored talking about their future.
“The future’s so uncertain,” Jack said. “It’s best not to, uh, not to jinx it.”
“Well, if we’re going to have children, I’d like to start right away,” Lily said. “I want to be one of those young, attractive mothers.”
“Those women end up in prison,” Jack joked, but Lily was horrified.
“You’re right!” she exclaimed. “I’m too pretty to be a mother.”
“Sure.”
“I’d make a lovely bride though, wouldn’t I Jack?” She batted her eyelashes seductively.
“I guess so,” he said, turning away from her.
Neither noticed the figure in the back of the room, listening in.

…

Colin Greene couldn’t believe how stupid his brother was being. Lily was talking marriage, and Jack seemed to be doodling something on a sketchpad.
“Let’s go get some lunch,” he heard Lily say. “You’ve had a terrible day, your father being shot and cheating on your mother all at once.”
“Father cheated on Mother?” Colin asked aloud to himself.
He watched as Lily led Jack out of the study. God, she was just Heaven. He caught his reflection in a large mirror. He had good features, didn’t he? What was so wrong with him?
“Nothing’s wrong with your appearance, brother,” Kayla said. As usual, he hasn’t heard her come in.
“It’s your mind that’s the problem,” she said. “You’re cold and cruel and suspiciously like Father.”
“Jack barely pays attention to Lily anymore,” Colin announced. “They’re breaking up, I think.”
“Well, in case they’re not, I have a proposition for you,” she said, and he got the distinct impression that she had something riding on this. “Drew, my sexy yet clueless beau, has a spinster sister named Samantha. You’re going on a date with her tonight.”
“I will not!” Colin cried. “I love Lily.”
“Be that as it may, dear brother, you will take Samantha out tonight.”
“And if I refuse?”
“You won’t,” Kayla said, assuming an air of confidence she didn’t really feel. She flounced off, leaving Colin alone and fuming with impotent rage.

(After a hiatus) Episode 4

Colin Greene had been very much in love since the age of twelve. As he often did, his mind sauntered off into the day that love had entered his life. His mother, the cold and beautiful Marnie Greene, had invited several wealthy families to the estate for a garden party. One such family was Herbert and Ginny Moss and their ten-year old daughter Lily. Colin was instantly attracted to her. She was innocent, sweet, and blonde. Shy, reclusive Colin watched her from across the garden.
“Just go talk to her,” his little sister Kayla said, sneaking up behind him. “It’s quite obvious that you are attracted to her, though she seems dull and dimwitted.”
“She’s heavenly,” Colin replied. He had made up his mind to talk to her when, much to his horror, his brother Jack beat him to it.
“I’m Jack,” the double-crossing sibling said.
“My name’s Lily. I can do a cartwheel,” she proclaimed with a giggle.
Jack and Lily had been together from that very moment.
Back in the reality of his study, Colin poured himself another drink. He still loved her. She was blonder and sweeter than ever, and damn, what he’d give to see her do a cartwheel. What did she see in handsome, popular, outgoing Jack?
“Thinking about Lily?” his sister Kayla asked, sneaking up on him.
“Why are you always sneaking up on me?” he asked.
“Why are you always so lost in thought?” she countered.
“None of your business, you witch,” he said bitterly.
“God, Colin, we need to work on your comebacks,” she said, sauntering out of the room.

...

“Marnie, Marnie, wake up!”
“Jeff?” Marnie asked, her vision blurry. “Jeff, don’t leave me!”
“Jeez, you gave me a scare,” he said. “I hadn’t seen you in twenty years, and you just fainted on me.”
“I did?” she whispered.
“Yes, I just told you that I was married with two children, and you fainted.”
“Now I remember,” she said. “Though I wish I didn’t! Oh, Jeff! You’re married! With two kids! We’ll never be together now.”
“No, I don’t suppose we will,” he said, but he didn’t seem too broken up about it.
“It’s not fair,” she said with a pout. “Today has been just dreadful. First the maid forgot to bring me my drink. Then my husband was shot. Now you’re married. What next?”
“Madam!” A maid burst into the room.
“Yes?” Marnie noted that she still had not brought the martini.
“Madam, the hospital called. Your husband will be just fine!”
“Why, God, why?” Marnie howled, clutching Jeff against her. “Why do bad things happen to good people? Why?”

...

Angela Rojo had a terrible burden to carry. Her deep, awful secret was ruining her life. Today at the hospital was just another example of how bad things were for her. She needed to talk to someone. She took off work early and went to find her sister Marie. Luckily, Marie was home.
“Angela, what’s wrong?’ she asked, seeing her sister’s tear-streaked face.
“Marie, I need to tell you something that I have never told anyone.”
“Okay,” Marie said, preparing herself for the worst.
“When I was thirteen, I was… I was cursed.”
“Cursed?” Marie asked incredulously.
“Yes, cursed. An old gypsy woman put a curse on my head.”
“What kind of curse?”
“She said that as soon as I turned eighteen my life would be ruined.”
“You’re twenty-four.”
“Yes, well, my life has gotten progressively worse over the past five years!”
“Six,” Marie automatically corrected.
“Huh?” Angela asked, sniffling and crying.
“Six years,” Marie clarified.
“Oh,” Angela said, crying and sniffling.
“I still don’t get it. What exactly has this curse done to you?” Marie asked.
“Oh, Marie, it’s made me do terrible, terrible things.”

...

“Jack, are you listening to me?” Lily asked as they drove home from visiting his father.
“Huh?”
“You seem a million miles away,” she said with a pout. “Don’t you love me anymore?”
“Of course I love you, Angela.”
“What?”
“What?”
“Did you just call me Angela?”
“Of course not,” Jack said. “Why would I do that?”
“I could have sworn that you said, ‘Of course I love you, Angela.’”
“Why would I say that?” Jack asked nervously, mentally kicking himself for the slip.
“Jack, I want you to know that I love you more than anything in the world,” Lily said seriously. “I have since the day we met at your mother’s garden party when we were both ten. I could never, ever love anyone else. No one. No one at all. You’re the only one for me, and if I lose you I will never love again.”
“You never have to worry about that,” Jack said. “I promise.”
His fingers were crossed behind his back.

...

It was becoming quite clear to Veronica that she would have to kill her own sister if she ever wanted Sean. Though she was known to be mean, sarcastic, moody, and shrew-like, she was not known to be a murderess.
“How can I kill her without killing her?” Veronica pondered aloud. “Send her to jail? Convince her to join the army? Move to Alaska? Keep her prisoner in the basement?”
And then… inspiration struck. She smiled evilly. Yes, this was it. Soon Sean would be hers, and Claire would never know what hit her.

Veronica found herself immersed in a daydream. Sean O’Connell was making love to her, and it was unbelievably wonderful.
“Oh Veronica,” he said. “I love you so much. I can’t believe I wasted all that time with Claire.”
“Don’t worry, Sean,” she said. “What matters is that we’re together now.”
At that moment, Claire walked in.
“Oh my God! What’s going on?” She was immediately overcome with sadness.
“I don’t love you anymore,” Sean told her. “I’ve realized how boring and lame you are. It’s Veronica that I love. She’s exciting and sexy.”
Veronica smiled in deep satisfaction as her sister ran off in tears… Now if only it were real!
“It will be reality soon enough,” she said to no one in particular. “Sean will be mine.”

...

“Father?” Jack entered the hospital room slowly. “Oh… my God.”
His eyes widened, and his lips formed a perfect O of shock. Thank God that Lily had decided to go to the hospital gift shop.
“Oh my God!” Angela Rojo shrieked. She quickly tumbled off the man underneath her.
“How—How are you… You were shot! And now you’re having sex!” Jack stammered and stuttered, sure that he was scarred for life by the image of his father and this woman having sex in the hospital bed.
“I’m so sorry,” Angela said. “I don’t know what I was doing. I’ve never done this before, I swear.”
“Jack, son, you really need to learn to knock,” Alexander Greene said calmly.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Dad. I just didn’t expect to find you cheating on Mom with some slutty nurse.”
“I am not slutty,” Angela countered.
“You were sleeping with a married man!” Jack screamed. “You’re supposed to be a nurse, and you were having sex with a gunshot wound victim!”
“Okay, slow down,” Angela said. “First of all, I didn’t know he was married. Second, I didn’t know about the gunshot wound. Your father told me he was here for a routine checkup.”
“How’s our patient?” Lily asked as she walked in with a dozen balloons and a bouquet of flowers.
“Oh, he’s very healthy,” Jack said with obvious scorn.
“Don’t be bitter, Jack. It doesn’t suit you,” Alexander said.
“I’m going to go,” Angela announced. “I’m really very, very sorry.”
It was only then that Jack really looked at her. Her large brown eyes were filled with remorse. Her dark, curly hair was beautifully mussed from sleeping with his father. Jack fell instantly in love with Angela Rojo. She was the most wonderful woman he had ever met. Lily paled in comparison! His heart sunk when she left the room.
“Did I miss something?” Lily asked.

...

“Colin, did you shoot Dad?”
“What?” Colin Greene turned around in surprise. He had not heard Kayla enter the room.
“Did you shoot him?”
“Of course not,” Colin said, straightening his tie.
“Neither did I,” Kayla said. “I’m pretty sure that Jack didn’t either. Mom’s still talking to a detective, which she wouldn’t do if she had shot Dad, so who did it?”
“You’re no fan of Father’s, Kayla. Why do you care?”
“Curious, I guess. Plus I’m bored. I just made love with Drew for two hours, and I feel like challenging my brain a little.”
“Charming,” Colin said. “And how is Mr. O’Connell?”
“Still middle-class. Still incredibly good-looking.”
“Still thinks you’re an angel?”
“Naturally,” she said. “He’s never going to find out otherwise. Who would tell him?”
”Maybe I would,” he said, shrugging.
“Oh, right. Like he would believe you. You’re not exactly the most credible person on the planet.”
“We’ll see,” he told her dismissively. He went back to business: the only thing he loved.

...

“I love you so much,” Sean said.
“I love you too,” Claire answered.
“You’re my soul mate,” Sean whispered.
“You’re my soul mate too,” Claire said.
“I’m so glad my brother let me borrow his car,” Sean told her. “Being in the backseat with you like this is Heaven.”
“One day we’ll go all the way,” Claire said earnestly.
“I’d wait for you forever,” Sean said immediately, secretly hoping that “forever” meant “sometime in the next two months.”
“Oh, Sean,” she said. “I know you would.”

...

Samantha O’Connell, middle sister of Drew and Sean, sat on her sofa. Alone again. It seemed as though her life never had a storyline. Drew was dating Kayla. Sean was dating Claire. Her parents had one another. She wanted someone to love.
“Hi Sam,” Drew said, yawning as he entered the room.
“Drew, do you have any single friends for me to date?” Samantha blurted out.
“None good enough for my little sister,” he joked.
“I’m desperate here,” she begged. “I’ll take anyone!”
“Well, uh, what about Kayla’s older brother?”
“Colin Greene? Isn’t he completely obsessed with the family business?”
“Maybe he’s just waiting for the right girl,” Drew said, smiling at the idea. “Kayla’s family loves me. They’ll totally love you too.”
Samantha had to admit that Colin was incredibly hot. He was several years older and had a reputation for being a reptilian, soulless man, but maybe Drew was right. Maybe she was the girl who would melt Colin Greene’s heart.

Detective Jeff Jones had not been inside the Greene mansion in over twenty years. As he examined the blood-soaked white carpeting, he couldn’t help but remember the last time he had been there. It was on the eve or Marnie and Alexander’s wedding. He had tried to talk her out of marrying that evil, corrupt, greedy, dirty, rich mama’s boy. Needless to say, he had failed in his attempts. Marnie was the first woman he ever really loved, and part of him would never recover from the way she hurt him.
“I’ve never loved you,” she’d said that night. “I love Alexander. Alexander, the man with the gun! The man I’m being blackmailed into marrying!”
She was crying at the time, and Jeff had the strangest sensation that she was being held at gunpoint, but still her words were very convincing. He knew that she was deeply in love with Alexander, and it shattered him.
“Jeff?” Marnie lacked confidence for the first time in years. Would he remember her?
“Mrs. Greene,” he said coldly. Remembering how she broke his heart was making him angry.
“Oh, Jeff,” she continued. “I thought I’d never see you again.”
“It seems that someone broke into your home by throwing a rock through this window, and when your husband came to investigate, the perp shot him,” Jeff said, trying to be professional.
“Jeff, I don’t care about that,” Marnie said. “How have you been? What have you been doing the past twenty years? Are you still single? I may be a widow soon.”
“I’m married with two children,” he said.
Marnie fainted on the spot.

...

When Jack and Lily arrived at the emergency room, they expected to see the entire Greene family rallied around their patriarch. No one was there.
“Excuse me, nurse,” Jack said, pulling aside a young nurse. “Have you seen my sister Kayla? Kayla Greene?”
“She left,” the nurse said. “She had a … family emergency.”
“She left this family emergency for another family emergency?” Jack asked, perplexed.
“Uh, sure,” the nurse said. These people were nuts.
“Where’s my father?” Jack demanded.
“We moved him to Room 300,” the nurse stated.
“Should we buy flowers or something?” Lily asked. She had learned such things in finishing school.
“No time,” Jack said. Lily almost reminded him that there was always time for good manners, but he was already racing towards the elevator.

…

Wendy Jones was baking cookies for her darling children and her loving husband. As she sliced the cookies onto a pan, she thought about her wonderful life. Her husband, Jeff, was crazy about her. She had his complete, undivided love and attention. Her twin daughters, Claire and Veronica, were wonderfully talented, sweet girls. They were also best friends. She sighed in satisfaction. Thank God that everything was so perfect and nothing could possibly tear it apart. It was at this moment that the twins arrived home from school.
“Hi Mom,” Claire said, cheerfully. “Guess what happened at school today?”
“Don’t tell her,” Veronica begged.
“Ryan Rojo asked Veronica to the prom in front of the whole school,” Claire announced. “He did it in the middle of the big pep rally!”
“What the hell did I just say?” Veronica yelled in despair.
“Oh, honey, that’s great,” Wendy said. “Ryan’s such a nice boy.”
“I’m not going with that loser,” Veronica said, taking a beer from the refrigerator. She deserved one after the day from hell she just had.
“He’s the President of the class, as well as the captain of the soccer team,” Claire said. “Everyone thinks he’ll get a scholarship to an Ivy League school, too. He’ll be a wonderful prom date, Veronica.”
“I’d rather go with your boyfriend,” Veronica mumbled. Claire didn’t hear her.
“Who wants cookies?” Wendy chirped, pulling the cookies from the oven. Veronica stomped upstairs in a fit of rage, but Wendy made sure to save some cookies for when she was feeling a little less grumpy.

…

Kayla Greene loved being Drew O’Connell’s girlfriend. It made her parents so angry to see their only daughter with someone so middle-class. Plus he was incredibly good-looking.
“Oh, Drew,” she whispered. “I was so scared when they told me Daddy had been shot.”
“Shh,” Drew said, stroking her hair. “You’re okay now.”
The one catch with dating Drew was that Kayla had to pretend to be an innocent little girl. Drew didn’t seem to question why a twenty-one year old woman behaved in this manner. In fact, it was why he loved her.
“They wouldn’t even let me visit him,” she said with a little sniff.
“You poor darling,” Drew said, holding her closer. The mood was ruined when Drew’s younger brother Sean busted into the room.
“Hey Drew, can I borrow your car?”
Kayla sighed. At least Sean’s annoying little girlfriend wasn’t with him this time. What was her name? Clara? Something stupid.
”No problem, kiddo,” Drew said. “The keys are on the kitchen table.”
Kayla tried to arrange her face in a more pleasing expression. Look sweet. Look sweet.
“You’re so sweet,” Drew said, and they went back to cuddling.

…

“Father?” Jack entered the hospital room slowly. “Oh… my God.”
His eyes widened, and his lips formed a perfect O of shock. Thank God that Lily had decided to go to the hospital gift shop for flowers and balloons. Jack would have hated to have her witness… this.

It was eleven o’clock on a Tuesday morning, and the maid had forgotten to bring Marnie Greene her martini. She frowned and tapped her foot impatiently. She really should fire this maid. This was the second time in three years that her pre-lunch drink had been forgotten: unacceptable. Marnie was almost desperate enough to cross the room and pour the drink herself when the maid rushed in and screamed, “Madam! Your husband has been shot!”
“Haven’t you forgotten something?” Marnie asked, pointing towards her empty glass.
“Your husband has been shot, ma’am,” the maid repeated. “There’s blood all over the living room!”
Marnie flinched at the thought of her white carpeting soaked in Alexander’s blood. She quickly pushed the image out of her mind. After all, she could always put in new carpeting later.
“I’m going to call the police,” the maid said, deciding that her mistress was in shock over her the attack on her husband.
“The police,” Marnie mumbled, memories flooding over her. Jeff, the only man she had ever really loved, was a policeman now. He would be coming here. Jeff would be coming to her house. A glimmer of excitement passed through her, and it felt like electricity in her veins.
“Yes!” she cried. “Call the police!”
….

Jack Greene was on the perfect date with his perfect girlfriend, Lily Moss. Sadly, he didn’t feel as perfect as this perfect day would normally warrant. He looked at Lily. She was lovely in a little purple sweater and white skirt. She was slim and had long blonde hair that she was currently twirling between her fingers.
Oh Lily, Jack thought. How I wish I could know what you’re thinking right now.
Little did he know that Lily was contemplating getting highlights to make her lovely blonde hair even more lovely. A shrill noise interrupted the lovers’ date; it was Jack’s cell phone.
“Hello?” Jack asked, obviously irritated at the interruption.
“Jack? It’s your sister, Kayla. Jack… Dad’s been shot!”
Jack quickly hung up the phone. He furrowed his brow.
“Jack… Jack, darling, what’s wrong?” Lily asked.
“Why would Kayla say, ‘It’s your sister, Kayla’? I only have one sister. Why couldn’t she just say ‘It’s Kayla’ or ‘It’s your sister’?”
“Jack, you’re not making sense,” Lily said carefully.
“My dad has been shot,” Jack informed her.
“Oh Jack!” Lily cried, throwing her arms around him in comfort. She started to sniffle. Even though Alexander Greene had always seemed like a cold, manipulative, murderous, cutthroat businessman, Lily had always hoped to one day be his daughter-in-law. He being dead would certainly put a damper on that particular dream.

….

Life had been tough for seventeen-year old Veronica Jones, mainly because life had been so easy for her twin sister, seventeen-year old Claire Jones. Though they were identical in almost every way, it was well known throughout the town of Autumn Falls that Claire was the prettier twin. She was also a wonderful figure skater, an A-student, and happened to be dating Sean O’Connell. Veronica hated skating and thought school was a bore, but Sean O’Connell was a different story. She wanted him, needed him, and had made it her goal in life to get him. She had no idea that Sean called her the Evil Twin behind her back, nor did she know that Claire always stood up for her. She hated Claire.
“Hey Beautiful,” came a male voice behind her. For a moment she expected to see Sean standing there.
“Oh. It’s you,” she said, seeing that it was only Ryan Rojo.
“Make me the happiest guy in school, and come to the prom with me,” he said.
“I’d rather die,” she replied flatly.
“You’re adorable.”
“I hate you.”
“I’ll ask you again tomorrow,” Ryan said confidently and walked away. She sighed. Why did he keep asking? It seemed that he’d been asking her out every day for the past four years, which was actually the case. It was pathetic.
“He really likes you,” Claire said, appearing out of nowhere.
“Ahh! Don’t scare me like that,” Veronica screamed.
“He’s cute,” Claire said.
“Then why don’t you date him?” Veronica snapped.
“I have Sean, silly,” Claire reminded her.
“Maybe not for long,” Veronica said with a wicked smile. Luckily Claire did not hear her.
“See you later, sis,” Claire said, giving Veronica’s shoulder a little squeeze. Veronica pulled away from her immediately.

….

Kayla Greene stood in the hospital emergency room, waiting for more news about her father. She had not been surprised to find out that he had been shot. He had many, many enemies. She had been surprised to learn that her mother had spoken to the police, no, had begged to speak to Detective Jeff Jones. The old woman hadn’t even seemed to be under the influence at the time.
“Ms. Greene?” Kayla looked up to see a young nurse.
“Yes?”
“Ms. Greene, your father is going to be fine,” the nurse said. “He wants to speak with you.”
“Tell him I just left,” Kayla said, turning to go.
“You—You don’t want to speak to him?” The nurse was clearly puzzled.
“Make some excuse,” Kayla said, waving her away.
“Weird family,” the nurse muttered under her breath. Kayla just smiled.
