It was eleven o’clock on a Tuesday morning, and the maid had forgotten to bring Marnie Greene her martini. She frowned and tapped her foot impatiently. She really should fire this maid. This was the second time in three years that her pre-lunch drink had been forgotten: unacceptable. Marnie was almost desperate enough to cross the room and pour the drink herself when the maid rushed in and screamed, “Madam! Your husband has been shot!” “Haven’t you forgotten something?” Marnie asked, pointing towards her empty glass. “Your husband has been shot, ma’am,” the maid repeated. “There’s blood all over the living room!” Marnie flinched at the thought of her white carpeting soaked in Alexander’s blood. She quickly pushed the image out of her mind. After all, she could always put in new carpeting later. “I’m going to call the police,” the maid said, deciding that her mistress was in shock over her the attack on her husband. “The police,” Marnie mumbled, memories flooding over her. Jeff, the only man she had ever really loved, was a policeman now. He would be coming here. Jeff would be coming to her house. A glimmer of excitement passed through her, and it felt like electricity in her veins. “Yes!” she cried. “Call the police!” ….
Jack Greene was on the perfect date with his perfect girlfriend, Lily Moss. Sadly, he didn’t feel as perfect as this perfect day would normally warrant. He looked at Lily. She was lovely in a little purple sweater and white skirt. She was slim and had long blonde hair that she was currently twirling between her fingers. Oh Lily, Jack thought. How I wish I could know what you’re thinking right now. Little did he know that Lily was contemplating getting highlights to make her lovely blonde hair even more lovely. A shrill noise interrupted the lovers’ date; it was Jack’s cell phone. “Hello?” Jack asked, obviously irritated at the interruption. “Jack? It’s your sister, Kayla. Jack… Dad’s been shot!” Jack quickly hung up the phone. He furrowed his brow. “Jack… Jack, darling, what’s wrong?” Lily asked. “Why would Kayla say, ‘It’s your sister, Kayla’? I only have one sister. Why couldn’t she just say ‘It’s Kayla’ or ‘It’s your sister’?” “Jack, you’re not making sense,” Lily said carefully. “My dad has been shot,” Jack informed her. “Oh Jack!” Lily cried, throwing her arms around him in comfort. She started to sniffle. Even though Alexander Greene had always seemed like a cold, manipulative, murderous, cutthroat businessman, Lily had always hoped to one day be his daughter-in-law. He being dead would certainly put a damper on that particular dream.

Life had been tough for seventeen-year old Veronica Jones, mainly because life had been so easy for her twin sister, seventeen-year old Claire Jones. Though they were identical in almost every way, it was well known throughout the town of Autumn Falls that Claire was the prettier twin. She was also a wonderful figure skater, an A-student, and happened to be dating Sean O’Connell. Veronica hated skating and thought school was a bore, but Sean O’Connell was a different story. She wanted him, needed him, and had made it her goal in life to get him. She had no idea that Sean called her the Evil Twin behind her back, nor did she know that Claire always stood up for her. She hated Claire. “Hey Beautiful,” came a male voice behind her. For a moment she expected to see Sean standing there. “Oh. It’s you,” she said, seeing that it was only Ryan Rojo. “Make me the happiest guy in school, and come to the prom with me,” he said. “I’d rather die,” she replied flatly. “You’re adorable.” “I hate you.” “I’ll ask you again tomorrow,” Ryan said confidently and walked away. She sighed. Why did he keep asking? It seemed that he’d been asking her out every day for the past four years, which was actually the case. It was pathetic. “He really likes you,” Claire said, appearing out of nowhere. “Ahh! Don’t scare me like that,” Veronica screamed. “He’s cute,” Claire said. “Then why don’t you date him?” Veronica snapped. “I have Sean, silly,” Claire reminded her. “Maybe not for long,” Veronica said with a wicked smile. Luckily Claire did not hear her. “See you later, sis,” Claire said, giving Veronica’s shoulder a little squeeze. Veronica pulled away from her immediately.

Kayla Greene stood in the hospital emergency room, waiting for more news about her father. She had not been surprised to find out that he had been shot. He had many, many enemies. She had been surprised to learn that her mother had spoken to the police, no, had begged to speak to Detective Jeff Jones. The old woman hadn’t even seemed to be under the influence at the time. “Ms. Greene?” Kayla looked up to see a young nurse. “Yes?” “Ms. Greene, your father is going to be fine,” the nurse said. “He wants to speak with you.” “Tell him I just left,” Kayla said, turning to go. “You—You don’t want to speak to him?” The nurse was clearly puzzled. “Make some excuse,” Kayla said, waving her away. “Weird family,” the nurse muttered under her breath. Kayla just smiled.
