Arabic Grammar - Help [Oct. 13th, 2008|09:50 pm]

zachcole
So, I'm looking to buy this t-shirt that says "Who are you to judge?" in Arabic - but I don't understand the reason it is saying what it is saying. Can anyone help break down this grammar for me? It'd be much appreciated!

من انت لى القاضي

here is the website, maybe i'm just reading it wrong - i'm not super seasoned in reading various arabic scripts

Grammar. [Oct. 6th, 2008|08:24 pm]

tulokaslaji
Hello,

I've been learning Finnish for about 3 or 4 years now. To me, it's now gotten frustrating that I seem to have made so little progress (although my native friends would disagree with me).

I would really love to be able to type in Finnish as smoothly as I do in English, yet that's not happening as I'm struggling with grammar. Not basic grammar, mind you, I'm fine with that, the much more complex areas of cases, sound changes etc as Finnish is an inflectional language.

Long post short, has anyone any idea of a good site for advanced Finnish grammar, that explains it simply and straight to the point? Google has either failed me, or only given me sites for beginners, and I really have my mind set on becoming near fluent within the next year or so.

Much appreciated.

 Hello everyone,
I would need your help.

I am tutoring those kids and helping them with their homework, everything is going fine...the only problem is french homework.
I never studied French in my life.
Until now I could give some help because since they are at the really beginning many things sound a bit like italian, but now I have to learn French myself so I can teach and help those kids.
Do you know any good site where I could learn very basic french?
Thanks

An other question.
The exam I am reading for my university is mostly written in english, and sadly I don't know many words in there (it's very complicated and high lever language). I was thinking if you could suggest me some good online dictionary English -> Italian also.
Very long ago I used babylon, but I cannot remember if it was good or not. What you think?
Anyway if there is any online dictionary I would prefer, because my pc is already bit slow to run an other program.

Thanks very much.
Sunnie.

Indonesian Dialect [Sep. 12th, 2008|01:56 pm]

Hey everyone! I'm not sure if anyone here can help, but it's worth a shot. I have a child that I sponsor through Compassion for God in Indonesia. The letters go through a translator, but I would still like to learn some the language for when we are writing back and forth; however, I'm not sure that I have the right dialect.

Some of the phrases he wrote are 'terima kasi',  'dengan mama dan papa di ruma', 'Papa saya Bernama markos sendangban mama saya bernama deibi'. I figured out that 'bernama' means name.  I think it's Malay, or Bahasa. Is that correct? Thanks for the help.

Spanish, French, Chinese, Cambodian (Khmer), and Vietnamese? [Sep. 11th, 2008|09:01 am]

snowmoon3
Hi folks.  I work at a company that recently went tobacco free on its campus and they have put up signs everywhere to this effect.  The problem is that the signs are mostly in English and the signs that are in Spanish are incomplete (they only give the first part of the message).  We also have clients who speak French, Chinese, Cambodian (Khmer), and Vietnamese (that I'm aware of) and probably other languages as well.  I'd like to make up some posters in these languages but I'll need some help as I haven't studied some of these languages ever and others in at least 5 years.  If you would be so kind as to translate the following for me, I'd really appreciate it (even in a language I didn't request as you never know when we might need it).  Thank you!

"Tobacco Free: Inside and Out!  Smoking is prohibited on [Community Healthlink] grounds."

Also, just because we often have to remind people, can someone help me out with how to do that in Spanish?

No fumar (or fumando?) aqui.  (right?)  but how do you say "You can smoke at that corner."?  (I can point them towards the corner that borders the campus.

Thank you for your help!

I'm trying to gather the essential materials for learning any given language. Here's what I have so far:

-a dictionary
-a book of fully conjugated verbs
-a complete grammar
-a book of idioms or figures of speech unique to the language in question
-an audio dictionary (where would I find such a thing though? Can I get one on CD?)

Any other suggestions?

Deutsch Heute [Sep. 9th, 2008|05:06 pm]

Help! Is there anyone out there who has taken an introductory German course with the workbook for Deutsch Heute (8th edition)??? I am missing vital pages!

Missing pages I've noted so far:
1-33
121-131

If you have them, and if it's possible, could you scan them and send them to me? Or if you have a pdf of the book or whatever, that'd be awesome, too.
Pass it along if you know someone who's got 'em... please?

I bought the book used, and now I know why I it was so cheap.

Job posting: Toronto German speakers needed! [Aug. 11th, 2008|03:05 pm]

Berlitz Canada is hiring Spanish and German instructors for our Mississauga location, with some off-site courses as needed. A vehicle would be an asset for this role.

Full paid training is provided in our unique Method.

This is a FLEXIBLE PART-TIME position. If you are looking for a full-time job, this is not the role for you. We cannot guarantee a certain amount of lessons as we book courses on a client-by-client basis.

Please forward a resume to the above email. Please DO NOT send a cover letter in Spanish or German as we do not currently have instructors in these languages, making them difficult to read! If selected, we will conduct a brief screening in the target language to ensure fluency.

Berlitz is a friendly, professional place to work and we encourage energetic, creative people to apply, as our lessons are fun and lively!

[Verb] Paradigms and Flash Cards [Jul. 31st, 2008|08:04 pm]

pgadey
[music |Lay Me Low - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds]

Hi there,

I was wondering about how to set up a flashcarding program for [verb] paradigms. I suppose what ever works for verbs could be extended to noun declension paradigms. Usually a verb will have hella' many different inflections, so I ask you, how would you make these into manageable flash cards?

Verb Avoir )

Since certain inflections will be used less than others, let's concentrate on the present indicative.

Perhaps making cards for each person / tense, with an example sentence, and translation? Something like:

Front side:
1st p. pres. ind.
(avoir) (un chat.)

Back side:
j'ai un chat
I have a cat.

The example sentence, simply adding more context, and solidifying verb.

[This is actually for a room mate of mine studying Ancient Greek, and Latin, where things slightly hairier!]

Increasing fluency? [Jul. 16th, 2008|06:49 pm]

Hi, I'm a 16 year old female from New Zealand - English is my native language.
I'm reaching what I feel is an intermediate level of Spanish (though I find it hard to tell what level I would be)
I really want to become much more fluent, and so I'm looking for ideas... How can I do this?
I'm taking Spanish lessons by correspondence and I try to listen to podcasts... read Spanish language websites etc.
I was considering getting some books and dvds that I've already read/watched in english, and reading/watching them in Spanish, is there anything else I can do?

I love languages and I want to learn as many as possible... I have learned a little French, a little Portuguese... But not really enough. I guess I don't really know where to start with a new language, so I'm trying to concentrate on Spanish.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help..

    Anki [Jul. 6th, 2008|09:21 pm]

    dan_lian
I have recently decided to download and use Anki going forward to help with some of my language-study needs: particularly, flashcards. In a nutshell, you can either create your own decks or use decks others have set up, and you acknowledge how well you recognize what's presented to you. Anki then sets it up to recur at some point in the future, depending on how well you recognized it--you don't need to see "easy" things as often as you do the ones you forgot entirely, and it cycles the "easy" ones in at longer intervals so you don't forget them either.

I'm currently working on setting up a deck for my Integrated Chinese book (traditional characters), and plan on setting one up for Korean in the autumn when that gets added to my courseload. The website is www.anki.com, it's a free download and product, and it's pretty intuitive and straightforward.

    Wanted to share. :)

Prayer Petition, English --> Arabic [Jul. 4th, 2008|12:10 pm]

    glitterboy4519
    Hello :)

My church is having a rather large celebration this Summer... In about a week, actually. And they want to incorporate foreign languages as part of the services. They know I've studied Arabic... But they also seem to think that 2 years of Arabic = fluent :(

Anyhow, they'd like me to translate this prayer petition into Arabic and read it during the service... Except I have to admit that, for the majority of the prayer, I could do no better than copying and pasting (and hoping) from a dictionary.

It's just one (run-on) sentence, but if anyone could help me translate this into Arabic (Standard, FusHa), or give tips on pronunciation, it would be unbelievably helpful!

(We pray) for Father Greg’s family and friends here present, and for those who are unable to be here today, in thankfulness for their devotion, support, and compassionate example.

    That's all :)

    Shukran!
