Оказывается, федеральное правительство США не имеет никакого отношения к сети federal highways - их всегда строили и поддерживали штаты.
The numbers and locations are coordinated by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The only federal involvement in the AASHTO is a non-voting seat for the United States Department of Transportation.

Sir, I find it intensely humiliating to be asked by airport security staff if I have packed my own bag. This forces one to admit, usually within earshot of others, that I no longer have a manservant to do the chore for me. Gentlemen should be able to answer such questions with a disdainful: "Of course not! Do I look like that sort of person?"

We thought cash for clunkers was the ultimate waste of taxpayer money, but as usual we were too optimistic. Thanks to the federal tax credit to buy high-mileage cars that was part of President Obama's stimulus plan, Uncle Sam is now paying Americans to buy that great necessity of modern life, the golf cart.

HATS off to Paolo Bellomo, a reader from Brooklyn, for this tip on the background to quantitative easing. He points out that the principles of current monetary policy were made clear in the rules of Monopoly. And, indeed, checking the Hasbro website, I found the statement that "The Bank never goes broke. If the Bank runs out of money, the Banker may issue as much more as may be needed by writing on any ordinary paper." Nowadays, the paper is a computer entry but the idea is still the same.
Of course, in Monopoly, the game keeps going until all the players except one are bankrupt or in jail and that can't happen in the real economy.....

Eighty of them flew into Clark County, checked into hotels under assumed names, gave false reasons for their visit, and around 6 P.M. on that Friday, walked in and assumed control of the bank. By all accounts -- including those of the employees at the Bank of Clark County -- the FDIC was almost startlingly competent, professional, and sophisticated. Even the workers who were seeing their labor dismantled and their jobs destroyed sound impressed by the cool efficiency of the Feds.

Российский союз промышленников и предпринимателей (РСПП) сегодня официально представит Минздраву предложение в связи с кризисом аннулировать в Трудовом кодексе обязательство работодателя выплачивать увольняемому по сокращению штатов и не нашедшему новой работы сотруднику зарплату в течение двух месяцев, ограничившись увольнительным пособием — около одной месячной зарплаты. При увольнении 1% экономически активного населения работодатели сэкономят на этом около 25-30 млрд руб. Профсоюзы и Госдума заранее против.

Центральная избирательная комиссия (ЦИК) РФ отказала в регистрации кандидатом на пост президента РФ Михаилу Касьянову. Соответствующее постановление было принято сегодня на заседании комиссии. Как говорится в документе, 16 января 2008г. М.Касьянов представил в Центризбирком 2 млн 063 тыс. 666 подписей избирателей. Из них в соответствии со ст.30 закона "О выборах Президента РФ" было проверено 600 тыс. подписей.
