So we (me and Mr. Angelo Spencer and little Miss Panda) just got home the other night from our whirlwind 2 month United States tour! It was incredible! We got to play shows, do stuff, and hang out with Jeffrey Lewis, Jack Lewis, Herman Dune, Tiny Masters of Today, Schwervon, Karl Blau, Patsy Grace, Paul Baribeau, Paleface, Midtown Dickens, Spoonboy, Erin Tobey, Matty Pop Chart, Underthrust, Good Luck, El Olio Woloff, Metal, and Mecca Normal (and probably others I am forgetting). You should look all of these people up. They are all amazing. It was a dream come true. And in SF I got to play all the songs from Alphabutt with the kids from the album!!!! Sophia, Macalaster, Amani, Jason, Ange, and Panda all onstage with me!!! AND for a bunch of the tour I had one of bestest ever friends Matt Tobey as my band. Holy Smokes. I am a lucky girl.

And it may seem like I forgot, but this band needs a paragraph all to themselves. The second month of the trip was with our dear, sweet friends L'Orchidee D'Hawai. Holy shit. They blew my mind every night and were wonderful travel companions every day. And an awesome backing band on a couple of my songs. Panda misses her four funny uncles already. (They have a REALLY good photo slide show from the trip on their profile).

I took a lot of pictures too, mostly of all the good playgrounds we hit. I will do a photo post another time. And, oh man, we got to see so many good friends, and so much family along the way. I will post one picture of Panda and her cousins in Colorado. So good! Those boys are big. Some of you might remember when the twins were brand new and little Emerson was sooooo sick and we all thought good thoughts for him! Look at him now!!!!

So, yeah, here is the info for the upcoming stuff. I am sorry there is not much stuff in Europe. We have a lot of family and friend visiting to do in the time over there. When it looks like off time on the tour schedule we will be busy with Papi and Mimi and Great Granny and Baby Zoe. Sweet baby Zoe!!!

Lately we have been finding hotels/motels near the venues. We get to the show place. And I either take a walk to a park or go get food with Panda while the boys unload the van and sound check. Then during their sets I can take her to the hotel to hang out until it is time for me to play. We figured out that this works nicely on days when she is a little tired or the show is crowded or the requirement of a safe baby friendly backstage isn't entirely met.

Last night she and I tried to go to the playground but it was too dark when we got there so we went to the hotel and cuddled. We got back to the venue just as Paul was finishing up and I took Panda backstage so I could make my setlist and make sure she had had enough milk. The local opener who had played before Angelo and Paul was backstage with two girls all having some beers. I figured they were friends of his and sat on the couch. But he left and the girls stayed. They didn't say one word to me. One of them took a camera out and was trying to sneak pictures of me and Panda.

I asked them who they were and why were they backstage. They told me their names and said the other guy invited them back there. (Note: If someone invites you to hang out with them backstage and they leave...you leave too...UNLESS you ask the other people there if they don't mind if you hang out)

So I told them calmly that it made me uncomfortable that they were IN MY PRIVATE SPACE trying to take pictures OF MY BABY, WITHOUT ASKING. and i asked them if they understood why that was weird. One of the girls just freaked out. She was yelling at me hat she is a huge fan and that I must not care about my fans, because I made her upset by telling her she was being disrespectful. And I just repeated (louder) that if you like and care about someone you need to show them respect. All I initially did was tell them they should have introduced themselves and asked me BEFORE they tried to take pictures (while I was whipping out my boobs). Then I probably would have let them take a picture BEFORE I asked them to give us some space.

She burst into tears and kept just screaming at me that I didn't care about her and that I didn't care about my fans. And telling me that she was mad at me and she wasn't going to watch the show. When all I was doing was doing all I could to be able to create a safe environment for my family so that I can go out and tour and play shows and meet people. I let people take pictures all the time, WHEN THEY ASK, unless I am running from one place to the next or in the middle of something.

We, as humans, need to be mutually decent to each other, and recognize that all people are still real live thinking feeling people regardless of how you know of them, what they do, or the connection you have to them through what they do. Just because you like me and see our pictures on the internet doesn't mean you can totally dehumanize me and my child, and expect me to not have an emotional and protective response.

And so I yelled back "FINE! GET OUT OF HERE! YOU ARE BEING CRAZY!" And by that point the sound guy had come to see what was going on and she was screaming at him that I had upset her. And I told him what happened and he told her that it was clear that she was in MY space and SHE upset ME and he walked them out.

The whole time her friend (the one with camera) was gesturing that she was sorry and she got was I was getting at but her buddy just couldn't even hear what I was saying.

Maybe she was drunk. I don't know.

I hope she and her friend sit down and talk about it at some point. And I do hope she is okay. Maybe she had some serious shit going on and my music helps and she wanted to talk to me but she was awkward and didn't know how. I just wish that, when I asked them who they were, we could have had a civil exchange. Instead the whole interaction was just shitty and unproductive.

I hate it when someone pushes me to the point that I freak out and get mad like that, especially around my baby. I rarely get THAT mad. It sucks when it happens. I can't stop thinking about it.

Besides this incident the tour has been amazing. I could write something good about every show, because for the most part everyone (audiences, promoters, staffs, volunteers, etc.) has been REALLY REALLY nice and fun and good and understanding. The shows have been ending around 11 so I have been sneaking off a lot to get Panda to sleep instead of hanging out all night hugging everyone. It is different for me. It's a trade off, but I love that little girl more than anything. Most people see that and let me go. Some have a harder time than others, and I feel bad too, but they let me go.

So yeah, heads up. I love you all (I hate the word "fan" by the way), but if I say I need space with Panda please just give me that and understand that soon all this Juno hubbub will die down and the shows will get smaller and it will be easier to hang out and meet everyone again, just how I like it. I am very accessible, but this tour is crazy and we need chill time.

You'll meet me someday.

And when you do, please don't scream in my face.

P.S. In case you didn't notice there was in early show added on April 4th at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. It will be just me and Matty Pop Chart. Be careful on your way there. I hear the streets in New Jersey are extra slippery when wet, and I would hate for any of you to go down in a blaze of glory on the way to my show. Get there safe and I'll be there for you...these five words I swear to you.

yesterday we drove all the way from roseburg to berkeley. we had planned on getting to berkeley today but we made it last night, even with a really nice long lunch/playground/shopping at the co-op break in ashland. ashland is fricken beautiful. and all the mom's at the park were just swinging their boobs around. the most nursing friendly park i have ever been to. so nice.

olympia, washington to roseburg, oregon 291 miles

we left around 1 yesterday and got to roseburg last night. on the way we took a long break somewhere about 30 miles south of portland, and found a playground, and a bookstore, a place to get panda some pants that fit, and place to sit down and have a decent meal.

aside from some treacherous rain, it was a pretty painless first day of tour.

On Sunday we went and had a show at Rhino Records in Claremont. I wasn't feeling well but for the most part it was still fun. It was just frustrating because during my set I explained that me and Panda had been sick and I didn't want for me or her to get sicker so I wouldn't be doing any hugging after my set and I just needed some space. Some people were really pushy though. It was frustrating. It's not like I don't want to hug people and take pictures. It's just that sometimes I have to be germ conscious. And sometimes I am tired and stressed out and just want to chill with Panda after I play. I hate having to be the asshole when someone keeps coming back, like 3 or 4 times, after I play a free show, and have kindly explained the situation. There were some kids who just didn't get it and when I finally kind of snapped and said "Please, give me space!" (I was with Panda) They were like "Do you know how many of your albums I own?" Jeez Louise. Some people. Give em an inch they want a mile.

I am not a dick. I was super tired and sick. Ugh.

I feel like to survive this next tour there is going to be a whole lot more chilling with Panda after I play. I bet some people are going to get mad and call me a sellout because of that too. It will be the first huge tour where I do all the driving. Ange drove in Europe last summer so I sat with Panda and could nurse her in the car. He doesn't have a US license though, so I will be driving many hours a day this time. By the time the shows are over at night I am just going to hang out with my baby. And I really hope we don't get sick. Oh man.

I would rather play and rest. Play and rest and make it through the trip. Than play and hug people for 2 hours and be exhausted and get sick and cancel shows. We'll see how it goes. If I have ease off the multihour post show hangouts for the sake of my wellness and my family I hope people can be understanding and respectful.

Blah.

After the Rhino show we were invited to an official Fox Searchlight Oscars viewing party, but opted to hang out at the home of our dear friends the Callacis instead.

They had DVRd the Spirit Awards so we watched that first. Then we watched the DVRd Oscars. We fast forwarded through a lot of it. Like all the montages and commercials. But during all of the songs from Enchantment it was a crazy sing along dance party, where new dances were invented such as the "Poop on Rael" dance, the "Step Over Rael" dance, the "Poop on Paul" dance, and the "How do you know?" dance.

I typically don't give a shit about these who is he best kinds of events, but I got busted getting weepy over Diablo's sweet speech.

Then we watched Barbara Walters. We replayed the clip of Vanessa Williams singing like 50 times so we could do the "Listen to the world, listen to the sky" dance.

Then we watched Barbara interview Ellen Page. The talked about The Moldy Peaches and how Barbara doesn't get it.

What's not to get?

We replayed some of her choicest nauseated facial expressions multiple times. We also filmed me and her face having a hum off.

And we replayed the end bit a bunch where she was dangerously close to showing snatch, in her high-slit gown, while she talked about how she wanted to sit upon the face of Harrison Ford.

Silly Babs. What's not to love?

So we danced more and sang a song and dance called "Don't Pinch My Balls".

It was the most fun I have had in a long time.

Now we are home for 6 days before this crazy ass tour....

I never thought that ever I would be mid-hug with someone as they whisper in my ear "Hi, I love your work. I'm Dustin Hoffman."

And I said the only thing you can say back to that "Oh really? I love your work too."

Holy Cow. Dustin Hoffman.

And Dennis Quaid played my guitar.

I met Lisa Kudrow and Josh Hartnett and David Allen Grier and a bunch of other people.

I met Ricki Lake and talked to her about birth!

I got hugged by Steve Buscemi, John Waters, and Jason Bateman (again). My interaction with Bateman was a little less awkward than last time. Thankfully.

I guess it is better to meet in the schwag room than at the after party.

When me, Matty, and Paul sat down to play I looked up and saw Brad and Angelina sitting there and closed my eyes and didn't open them until we were leaving the stage.

I knew The Rock was there. If I had looked into the crowd and saw his big beautiful smile watching me play I would have collapsed off of my chair. So I couldn't even look.

As we walked off the stage Matt Mutherfucking Dillon was standing backstage and we exchanged uncomfortable glances and I choked and just shot him an uncomfortable smile. Matt Dillon.

Over The Edge, The Outsiders, Drugstore Cowboy, Rumble Fish, LITTLE DARLINGS, MY BODYGUARD.

I couldn't even say HI.

Oh man. Zoinks.

Alright, so here is my verdict. Actors and Actresses are mostly just like most musicians. People who do what they do and sometimes them doing it makes them have a really recognizable face.

But mostly they just want to do what they love. And mostly they are nice.

But of course there are going to be some jerks just like there are always SOME jerks in every category of animal. There are some nice teacher and some jerky teachers, some nice people working at the post office and some jerky ones, some nice gorillas...and so on.

And in real life they all seem a lot more real and a lot more human than in fake life...like in the magazines and on the screens. And they aren't all midgets. I was surprised.

As much as I am freaked out by the biz, I think everyone who knows me knows I am a big fan of teevee (shows not commercials and the mega-networks) and movies. So to be around and meet all these awesome weirdos who have impressed me over the years was really cool and fun.

One thing that was fucking stupid crazy was the aforementioned schwag room.

I had heard the rumor that, while poor people don't even get health care and food and shelter, famous people get tons of free shit.

And holy crud it is true.

And it is mind boggling.

Me and Matty and Paul aren't "famous" but we were VIP yesterday, and we got to play the game.

We got chocolate, and foot cream, and body wash, and body spray, cell phones, and sunglasses, and espresso makers, and i-pod docks, and rhinestone flip flops, and free netflix accounts, and free acupuncture gift certificates, and 2 free nights at some fancy bed and breakfast, and free movie passes, and the boys got some swimming trunks, and I got an oversized lady bag. We turned down the perfume, the beer dispenser, and the python purses. It was so weird. I don't really understand it. I guess these companies hope someone will leave their product out on the table while Cribs is being filmed at their house or something. And everyone will be like..."OOOH, Marissa Tomei has a desktop beer machine- I want a desktop beer machine". My dad is gonna love his new coffee maker and the 1 year supply of free decaf. But I wish the free shit was being given to people who need shit, rather than people who have tons of shit already.

What a strange world.

So backwards.

But it was a fun experience to add to my already long list of fun experiences.

After we hauled our loads out to the minivan Ange and Panda met us in the parking lot, and the boys went to the after party.

Me and Panda climbed into the minivan and I changed my clothes. Out of my gown (made by Paperdoll Fashion) and back into the clothes I wear everyday. It felt so good to just cuddle and nurse my baby and look out the window at the beach.

Today, at 3, we are playing at the Rhino Records shop in Claremont. That should be fun. We get to hang out with the famous Callaci Bros. And Matty and Paul are going to play too this time. Not just with me, but some of their songs too.

Amoeba was fricken psycho the other night. Wow. Thanks everyone who got in and everyone who tried to get in. There were so many nice kids there. And one thing I love about LA is that it is so colorful. There are always more brown skinned purple haired punks in this town than anywhere else. I love everyone, but it always feels good when the crowds are super diverse.

And my cousins Christopher and Nia were there and they never met each other before. So that was cool. And Zack Wolk brought us food AGAIN (amazingly kind soul). And my old friend Myste (who I wrote I Will Never Forget for) was there. And my old friend Andy Milonakis was there. I have known him longer than I have known anyone else who lives in California. Bedford Hills represent. I sure like that kid. Always have.

Now, I am in the hotel. And I can't sleep. We all have pretty bad colds. Stupid airplanes always make us sick.

I am glad the next trip we are driving everywhere. In our own car.

I am starting to worry that our perpetual illness probably has something to do with me hugging hundreds of people everyday too. If you feel even remotely sick please don't hug me. It's going to be a long tour...we need to be strong...

It's not the first time I have asked for well wishes to be sent to our sinuses.

And it won't be the last.

I should go back to bed. I don't even know what this post is about.

Okay. Today is an exciting day. I am playing with Brad and Emmalee from Rosa tonight at The Gilman. They are going to play Rosa songs. It will be weird without Kirke and Benjamin, but good to hear those songs. I sure like those songs.

Today is also exciting because today we will finish recording Alphabutt!!! And it will be out on K records in August!!! I decided to just release it as a cd, because then it will be out much faster. I am going to make a book for kids another time. It will take forever to get a book completed but the cd is so close to being done. It is a crazy album! I am really excited about it. ...tomorrow we fly to LA and meet up with Paul Baribeau and Matt(y Pop Chart) Tobey. They are flying out to accompany me at the Amoeba show tomorrow night and at The Spirit Awards on Saturday. You can see the 3 of us on the teevee feeling awkward and poorly groomed. I am glad I am not doing it alone. We are playing Tire Swing, and it's nice because they are both in the song. I am always glad when Paul is around to sing his part.

On Sunday we are celebrating the Oscars by playing Wii bowling over a sweet brunch at the Callaci house and then playing a show at the Rhino Records Store in Claremont at 3pm.

We found out that the Australian label is willing to pay for us to bring Hukee along to help with Panda. We are all super excited!

It is almost all figured out and it's gonna be a doozy. Keep in mind that we are touring with Panda. We will not drive 7 hours out of our way or play 4 shows in one day!

today is the instore in seattle. it is scheduled to start at 3 but i am going to stall so people have to time to get there after they finish up at the caucus. if you skip your caucus for the show i will be sad. i will stall and i will play a long set. so go caucus it up and then come to the show. got it? good. oh, yeah, and i was told that there may be a way you can go and fill out all your stuff on a piece of paper and leave without staying for the whole thing. i am not sure though. either way, go caucus.

Sunday February 24th is The Oscars. Juno is nominated for 4 things. I bet people are going to wear corsets and push-up bras and prosthetic bigger packages and lip plumping glosses and super painful shoes. I don't know if I am even invited. If I am invited it will be so weird. I don't do fancy well, and I wouldn't want to be quirky and ultra conspicuous Bjork style. I think I would need to drink a big tall piping hot mug of invisibiliTEA and try to find a seat in the back, big enough for my gigantic ass, from where I can amaze at how miniature the people of Movieville are. I might not even fit in those teeny tiny chairs. Good thing everyone I have met so far has been so freaking nice or I might hate them for being so little and cute.

Just kidding. I don't hate. anyone. ever. except...well...like...the president. That fucker.

But yeah, The Oscars are actually happening because the strike is over. And I have been meaning to mention, because I feel like a sucker and a fool, that even though I was PROMISED that The View was not a show affected by the strike it really was. The View has writers and they were on strike. I was told they didn't and I defended my decision to be on there and I was wrong. I should've Googled that shit myself. But I trusted people, who trusted people. The whole aftermath was very fucked up and emotional and I cried a lot about it. I never would have gone on there (even for Whoopi) if I had known the truth. But in a world of people who care about number ones and selling shit and having guests and VIEWers, I need to remember to do my own research. THE BIZ is fucking sketchy. lesson learned.

Then what is next?

We fly home from sunny Calimafornia. Hang out for like a week. And then we drive to Austin, in our minivan, for SXSW.

Sat March 15th I am playing the showcase for Ground Control Touring.

Yes, you heard me right. I got a booking agent for the first time in YEARS and I am actually happy about it. It isn't as horrifyingly scary as I thought it would be based on past nightmarish experiences. This booker is named Eric. He books Bright Eyes too. He is totally prepared to book only all ages, non-smoking, non-ClearChannel/LiveNation shows, in spaces with a kid friendly spot for Panda to chill in. And he is totally okay with me sometimes saying "hey, i have this house show on this day". And he is totally fine with shows in anarchist community spaces and old churches and shows in parks. He and I are working together, so I have less work to do. Which is good because, well, I am fucking overwhelmed sometimes.

So yeah, from Austin we head out on THE BIG TOUR. So far we have confirmed.

Then we are trying to get something in Miami and then up the coast. We will definitely hit Athens and Durham, but the rest is still being worked out.

On April 4th we pick up our friends L'Orchidee D'Hawai for the rest of the trip.

Philly is confirmed for the main room of the Unitarian Church, like sitting in the pews, on April 5th with Angelo Spencer and L'Orchidee D'Hawai. It will be an all ages matinee.

That night there will be a show at Haverford that will be free for students $5 for non students.

April 6th will be New York City.

Then maybe north of there and then west from there. Then the midwest and over to Colorado, across to SLC, to SF, and back up to the NW.

There will be more details soon about all that.

On Friday May 9th I am confirmed to play Ladyfest London. And on May 23rd I am confirmed to play the Main Room at Paradiso in Amsterdam. There will be more shows in the UK and Europe added. And I will tell you when I know where and when they will be.

I know I keep teasing you Australia and New Zealand but we are shooting for 2 weeks in June. Maybe after June 13th though because that is when Uncle Hukee graduates from the college and that is a REALLY big deal.

On July 5th and 6th I am playing with Ghost Mice in Tacoma and Olympia.

July 18th, 19th, 20th is What-the-Heck fest in Anacortes, WA. I missed it last year and I was sad. I will not miss it this year.

I can't make it today for the show at Music Millenium. Ange got REALLY sick yesterday and today he hasn't been able to get out of bed. Then in the middle of the night Panda woke up crying with a fever. She has been fussy and clingy and sleeping or nursing on and off since. It is too cold and crappy too take them out of the house. And it is too far away to go without them. Sick little baby needs the boobs all the time.

I am working on rescheduling. I will tell you asap when it will be, and I will try to plan more than one show for that day.

I will come down there and play a show sooooooooooon.

When I was small I had an 8 track of Buffy Sainte-Marie. I just found these videos. I love her so much. So so so much.

I can only dream of being as mighty and beautiful as her. A goddess. She breaks my heart.

The way she has such wide eyes when she sings kills me as I hide behind my eyelids.

I had to share.

In the past couple days I have had two big money offers from Walmart. Fuck you Walmart.
