Saint Buffy
When I was small I had an 8 track of Buffy Sainte-Marie. I just found these videos. I love her so much. So so so much.

I can only dream of being as mighty and beautiful as her. A goddess. She breaks my heart.

The way she has such wide eyes when she sings kills me as I hide behind my eyelids.

I had to share.

In the past couple days I have had two big money offers from Walmart. Fuck you Walmart.

I will never EVER write music for you.

Fuck you for destroying our communities. Fuck you for homogenizing our world with your shitty poorly made crap.

Fuck you for fucking your employees.

"Their poverty's profiting you".

Thank you Buffy. You gave me a strong start.

I am so glad Juno wasn't a bimbo. Too many female film characters are.

Please girls, don't pretend you are weak or dumb because you think that is how you have to be.

All the strong women, who helped make me who I am, are on my mind. Maybe because of all the messages I have gotten from those of you who have said that I have changed or empowered you. Let's keep it going.

Pass it on.

Kudos for being an inspiration, not a sellout.

I have just recently discovered her. It is a shame that so much was done to censor her music just because she is native.

Good on you for keeping it real in the midst of all this new attention.

So.

I think me and the family are going to move to Olymipia instead of Seattle. Do you like it (oly) more than Seattle? I know you made that move recently....

Kimya, thanks so much! Not just for saying no to those fuckers, but for talking openly about why it's important to say no, why it's important to stay true to your values--encouraging others to do the same! It seems really unfashionable to not take the easy route and make excuses for collaborating with the bad guys.

This was a great entry.
My Mom and I hate Walmart as well.
I heard they take money out of their employees paychecks (that are shit anyways) to pay for all of their advertising.
BULLSHIT!!!

Kimya, I can't tell you how much of an inspiration you are to me. I know you probably get this like 200 times a day but seriously. I talk about you like you are a personal friend of mine. There really are too few strong women represented around the world. Kick Walmart's ass. You should write a song about how Walmart sucks and doesn't promote their female employees or pay their female employees as much. Fuck that. I played you at work today and everyone loved it. Thank you for being you. Stay strong. xoxoxoxo

Your attitude inspires me on a daily basis. Thank you for being you, and not being afraid to be who you are. I only hope this is passed on to younger girls, who are now more than ever bombarded with inappropriate images and foul words regarding their gender, bodies, faces, minds, and souls. I can only follow in your footsteps and hope to make the impact you make with your every action.

Thanks, Kimya.

I loved Buffy too, and I VIVIDLY remember watching her on "Sesame Street". Though I'm not always thrilled to be as old as I am now, sometimes I'm so glad I was a child of the '70s to have had the influence of the early days of Sesame Street, which was so, SO empowering to kids...the messages about sharing, diversity, cooperation, compassion, were so gentle and yet cracklingly intelligent...there are clips from 'Street that still make me weepy now, they're so right-on and touching.

As are YOU, Kimya. :-)

At my school we have this little place called the Teahaus.

You might have seen it when you played here last year. I read about the show in your journal before it happened and kicked myself hard for not going.

Anywho, it's this little hobbit hut and my friend Tobi works there Friday afternoons. We were there with our friend Jacki. Tobi's iPod was hooked up to the sound system and you came on.

It sounded like you but I wasn't quite sure.

Then Jacki said "OH MY GOD THIS IS KIMYA. I WANT, LIKE, A PONY AND WE CAN RIDE OFF INTO PLUTO TOGETHER."

My friends are interesting.

But yes, we bonded in a torrential downpour rainstorm from hell over some rockin' sounds.

So thanks! And yay for strong women!

you have empowered me more than you know.
i probably wouldn't have gotten through the last few months without you singing in my ears,
and you with the moldy peaches gave me and my lover something to connect with even more. then, when he left, you helped me remember who i was before.
keep keeping!

My mom gave me her old Buffy Sainte Marie records when my roommate got a record player and now I really want to go listen to them.

Your music makes me feel better and has gotten me through some tough days, and it's high time I thanked you for that. So thank you!!
