Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
read the previous entry first so that this will make sense.

now, check this out. my friend sheila is in texas and she has been volunteering at the astrodome. she is willing to have cds, cassettes, walkmen, portable cd players, boomboxes, and headphones sent to her house. she will organize a team of kids in her area to distribute these things to teenage survivors of the hurricane who have been relocated to the astrodome and transferred to schools down there.

so please, go through your music collections and your closets and find things that are collecting dust. so many of us have upgraded our music players and lost interest in things we used to listen to. i think it would be okay to donate burned cds and mixtapes too. ask your friends to donate stuff. ask local stores to donate stuff. maybe you don't have a cd player but maybe you could spare $10 to send a gift card. ask bands you know to donate some of their albums. ask record labels to make donations.

i can't imagine being a teenager and going through tough times without my music.

and i am just imagining having my cat die without listening to sting. or being too shy to talk to ed without being able to listen to debbie gibson. or being pissed off about having to clean my room without having a suicidal tendencies cd to throw stuff around to. or driving around aimlessly without the violent femmes. or ending a fight with my brother without blasting metallica.

imagine losing your home, all of your possessions, and members of your family, some of your friends...and just sitting in a strange place. being told you can't go back AT LEAST for 2 months, but maybe FOREVER.

it might help a little to put on some headphones and escape.

so please help in any way you can. feel free to donate money too. this way if sheila and her friends meet anyone with a request for an album they are desperate to own again they can go get them a copy.

you can send your donations to:

Sheila Jozami
11423 Birchwood
Humble, Texas 77338

her live journal is:
http://www.livejournal.com/~itarisk

her myspace is:
http://www.myspace.com/vas_defens

if you can help us make a website with an information page and a message board let me know.

awesome. thanks everyone.

im from germany, i wont send any cds because its too expensive to send... but i think its a really good idea. i know a guy who lives ... lived in new orleans. well hes alright i guess. he lost his home but hes fine.
i dont know what to say. it just feels so unreal. i watched tv the whole day and there were these programs about all those people and all that water and about what was made wrong and all the dead people and... i just couldnt believe it. i mean, its new orleans. it seems its just one of these movies.

I live just north of houston in one of the richest communities in the state (ugh, i hate it here, though!). The good part about it is that we know that we can all give a lot to the families in the area, especially the ones in hotels along I-45. My mom is planning to adopt a family and bring them into our home to help them out, but my father is rather iffy about it.

Today, I cleaned out my entire room - closet, desk, drawers, attic, shoeboxes, craft supplies. Everything. Anything that I don't want or need that is reusable is going to the survivors in the hotels and in the Astrodome. I am giving away books, old school supplies, clothing, paper, and other entertainment like board games I never play.

I'm agnostic, but my parents' church is setting up a computer lab for the families, a basketball court, and playground. They are also providing free daycare on certain days of the week and are shipping bags of donated toiletries to the Astrodome Tuesday. Even though I hated sitting through a sermon today, I think it's amazing that so many people are taking a part in providing for these needy families in our area.

Sheila is a doll. I haven't heard from her in a while and I'm leaving Houston again tomorrow morning...but she should totally contact me if she reads this. Get my phone number from Jill or JD and see if there's anything I can do via the University or at least the San Marcos community. I'd love to help any way I possibly could.

i can do a website quickly, email me if you still need that - it will have to be an extension of my own domain (i.e. emotionlotion.org/donations) until a domain is set up, if that's okay. email me at april(AT)hornbuckle.org letting me know what you want on it.

I contacted you on myspace about the hurricane benefit show in Louisville. I know you can't play, but really.. if you know ANYONE that can play or could help out, I'd really appreciate it. Woven Hand (David from from 16 Horsepower) is already in.

i've got a lot of people here in bartlesville interested. i'm thinking about passing out information and having people contact me and send it straight to her and send it to me, and i'll come up with the postage money and send it.
this is such a great idea, and i'm so glad that so many people i know are interested and willing. thank you for thinking of this. i mean, i wouldn't be alive if i hadn't had my music. there have been times when i was ready to overdose on whatever i could find when i just laid my head next to my stereo blasting music and crying until i felt like i could go on. those kids will need music now more than ever, and i'm so glad you thought of it and have gone to the trouble to organize it. thanks.

that 2 months is probiably going to be longer. i heard on the news that it will take at least 2 months to pump out the water, and that there are 2 more hurricanes that are expected to heppen this year. they may not go through that area, or be as powerfull, but they could sure put a damper on pumping out that water.
this idea is really really cool. i could make the next couple shows on vashon mixtape drives.
awesome Kimya, really awesome

Man, this is good. I think that gift cards would be best, as I know that many of the residents in the Astrodome are from low income deep black south, and I can kind of guarantee that due to cultural differences, they won't be into my brit pop, metal and indie rock. I'd hope they can find the music that speaks to them and reminds them of home.

I'm not sure if I'm writing this to the original author, or someone who is passing the message along. If it is the latter, I would appreciate your help in getting it back to the original person.

My name is Aaron Rubens. I am a Tulane University Junior who goes to school in New Orleans. Obviously, I feel very close to this whole situation. Please check out the project that my friends and I have created, because its focus is on student involvement across the country.

It is called the NOLA Hurricane Fund.

I really like your idea of music donations, and I think it could go along great with our "Phase 2: relief" efforts. Take a look at the website, and then tell me what you think (arubens2000@yahoo.com)
