if you haven't heard the mayor of new orleans on the radio yet PLEASE go HERE and click on the link to the left and listen. listen all the way through to the very end.

after you listen to that look at this picture for a minute...

the girl on the left is my friend kaytee. i just got a message from her telling me that she found out today that her grandma's nursing home in new orleans was not evacuated and her grandma drowned. kaytee just started her first year of college and she is far away from all her friends and family. please go HERE and send her your love. be her friend. a lot of people are going to need a lot of love right now.

hug your friends. talk to strangers who look sad. hell, hug strangers too. ask people if they are okay. post your IM and tell people they can contact you if they need someone to talk to. (kimyamdawson)

we have to take care of each other.

oh and thanks for all the hugs last night.
last night was pretty special.

It's so sad to see hear and see what has been going on. I just sold my artwork so I could donate the money for relief efforts. This post was really sweet

kimya. i just listened to that radio link and i got really upset. its two in the morning and ive been freaked out for days. ive been really selfish-minded and then really aware of it and i managed to get a head cold. i should be sleeping but i just havent gotten there yet. there's no one to call tonight. i get scared and sad when i realized there is no one i can be sure will answer their phone that i dont feel weird calling in the middle of the night. it makes me feel lonely. i want to offer space for people because we have some to spare but my roomate is away and i have to ask her first.
i thought i felt nothing. i usually feel this deep detached nothing that has a lot in it, but i take this spiritual detachment that some might take as dark but it has a lot of light in it for me. sometimes. so i thought i felt nothing until they started crying at the end (of the radio link) and then i lost it. now i feel all disoriented because i dont cry like that often and it just shut off like a switch. i scare myself a little. sorry im rambling. my friends are all asleep, or out cause its friday night. how are my neighbors all stupid partying right now? i feel really powerless. i sometimes catch myself pretending i have superpowers and i think thats how i shut of my emotions. with delusion. thats scary too. if i dont stop writing ill have written too too much.
oh. the other day i realized (and im sure this observation has been made) that you talk about shit more than anyone i know, but ive never known you to shit-talk anyone.
thank you for being you.
im sad i didnt make it last night. whats worst is that it was cause im disorganized. i need a wipeboard calender around my neck. im gonna write or play my guitar now cause i can. i think i have to call in to work tommorow. crap.

it seems like no one is really concerned with the outcome of this crisis. i was up watching nightline far longer than i should have been last night, but i couldn't turn the tv off. i think that it's ridiculous that these people have to endure this hardship at all, let alone the days that they've been down there with nothing. i'm glad that more people are willing to speak about this, because we can't keep quiet. i've sent countless emails to my state's officials urging them to rally for the cause and send money and supplies down there. obviously they haven't responded, but i still feel compelled to do it. my local news station raised $257,000 just yesterday to be sent to new orleans and the surrounding areas. if utica ny can raise that much money in a day, i think that everyone should be able to do something. i think that a lot of people that i've talked to are getting cautious about sending money to the red cross and fima because we haven't heard any coverage that says that they've started to help people or have even reached the city yet. i just hope that conditions start to improve soon...
*i'm sorry that this post was so long, and i know that you're not going to read it anyway, but i appreciate having a space to get this out, and i love the fact that you're always motivated to speak about things like this and try to help people get through it. i'm going to hug everyone i see today, and i'll definitely try to speak to kaytee, because it sounds like she needs some love right now...* thanks for being you.

i'd have to say the same to you ;). you really are concerned with the state of the world around you, and that's something that i'd like to see more of in our generations :). *i don't mean to be a complete kiss-ass, but* it's really great that i can look up to someone who's talented and a great role model. you're inspiring. thanks for being you ;).

Sometimes the world is such a sad place, the government isn't equipped to save life's only take them. The whole idea seems to be lost to them, I'm sure its a hard situation to deal with but there doing so little. It makes me sick, I can't listen to the radio, or watch t.v without getting mad at the whole thing. People are hungry, sick, and dying and all they can talk about our "looters." I'm sure some are in it for personal gain, but if I'm hungry and thirsty and all thats in the way of me being full and quenched is a door, that doors coming down. I hope they the govenment steps up there efforts and save as many people as possibal. Oh I've been rude, I'm Adam Gale from Humbolt park chicgo it's nice to meet. Everyone be safe. Love, Me

it truly is the poor blacks of the area that are falling victim to this.
i saw on the news where there was a picture of a black man with a trashbag full of food and drinks that he had found in a grocery store, and the caption under it said "black man loots grocery store"
while a picture almost identical was found of two white people carrying bags of stuff they had taken from a grocery store, but with a caption that sounded more like "a young white couple after finding food and water"

it really is upsetting to watch the news. my sister and i have spent the last few days sitting infront of the tv crying and yelling about the whole thing.

SEND DONATIONS TO THE SALVATION ARMY OR NATIONAL UNITED WAY!
[info]mattiebooo

my aunt lives in mobile, AL, and is basically in charge of coordinating all the volunteers in alabama.
recently she was walking around in a beach town close to mobile, and said people were just wandering aimlessly, not knowing where to go or what to do. there was NO HELP TO BE FOUND. as she got closer to the beach, she finally found the Red Cross passing out water to people in their million dollar beach houses.
she took a picture and asked the volunteer why they weren't helping anyone the people that had nothing to begin with and have now lost it all. the volunteer simply said they were doing what they were told.

FEMA and Red Cross also were completely unaware that there were 10,000+ people that had been moved to a convention center. how do you displace 10,000 people?

we are trying to encourage everyone to send their donations to the SALVATION ARMY and NATIONAL UNITED WAY.

things are very chaotic right now. if the red cross and FEMA had not done the moving, it's not that surprisng that there was a period of time when they lost track of things. this situation is obviously out of the control of anyone really. the government has obviously dropped the ball on this situation, so i have nothing good to say about FEMA, but the red cross is a really good organization. i have done disaster relief for them before and while the red cross is not perfect, they are really hardworking and dedicated and it's almost all volunteer and they get nothing from the government, people donate their time because they care. the salvation army is a weird christian organization that has some weird programs in other countries that i'm not completley comfortable with.

i wasn't trying to ram the red cross. i know they are doing what they can, but i also know that they are going to get a lot of help already and i think its important to remember other groups (salvation army, national united way)
and the reason i like salvation army and feel more comfortable giving me money to them is that at all their stores, they people that work there are also the people that are getting help from the organization. i feel like the salvation army is more in touch with the poor community there. as for their foreign affairs, i don't know of anything that would make me not want to support them.

the salvation army is an evangelical group that does a lot of their works with the hope they are also converting people. in their work in other countries they seem to have little respect for native peoples cultures and religions.

"The children are easy to work with and very responsive - the adults are a little more difficult. At one day centre in the north-east of the country which is located in a primarily gypsy community, Romany adults will not attend luncheon clubs or Bible studies, but they make full use of the second-hand clothing facility."
http://www.salvationist.org/poverty.nsf/vw_features/8056517A1C220E5380256ABC0040C4E8?opendocument

the salvation army does a lot of good things and helps a lot of people, i'm uncomfortable with their desire to convert everyone to christianity in the process.

alright, then how about donating to Second Harvest?
red cross is about to pull out. their job is to get people stable, second harvest is in there for the long haul.

you don't like salvation army. i don't like red cross. thats all beside the point, as long as help gets to lousiana, mississippi, and alabama.

I don't have a myspace to send her love, but if she's into IMing random people who'll talk: taddi says.

When tragedies occur, people think a mass quantity of humans die but they never think a grandmother died, a brother was a lost, and a newlywed couple only spent a day or two together.
