4:58 am - Monthly Flowetry
|
*I used to write a period poem every month, but haven't written one in a long time. This one just came to me yesterday on the way home from the park.
Monthly Flowetry- A haiku in 3 parts
Crampy and bleeding Totally overheated Needing to cool down
Dropping pants to sit Bare assed on the muddy beach Would feel great right now
I would do it if I wasn't surrounded by Other people's kids

It took more than 10 years to finish reading the big book (AA) and less than 10 hours to have something magical happen after I was done.
I played a free show in a park in Barcelona yesterday and a dirty drunk old man got on stage. The park was full of people. The stage was surrounded on all sides. I could feel security get tense and prepare to remove the man. The man started chanting "MUSICA MUSICA!" I could tell he was just very excited so I told him to dance. It was the last song of my set. "Happy Home" about making sure life is exciting. He did one of the finest interpretive dances ever, without understanding english. Everyone was laughing and cheering for him. When the song was over he said "Embrasos!" and there was a huge gasp from the crowd! Would I give this old drunk the traditional kiss on each cheek? At first I pulled away and then I thought fuck it and kissed him. His face totally lit up and everyone cheered! Then I sang "The Greatest Love of All" and sang the last verse to him "if by chance that special place that you've been dreaming of, leads you to a lonely place find your strength in love" and when i said the last word i took his hand. he stood up and bowed with me. everyone clapped for him. he had such a huge smile on his face.
i think if i hadn't finished the big book that morning i would have felt a little more frustrated and judgemental when he got onstage, but instead i was feeling compassion understanding and self reflective.
i am a big time struggler.
big time.
who am i to judge anyone?
love helps EVERYONE.

8:19 am - Herbal Pandemic Preparedness
|
(This was passed on by my beautiful Farmacy friends in Providence. I think it is good information for health and healing all the time. xoxo kimya)
Whether the swine flu is a real concern, or an attempt by the pharmaceutical companies to make more money on vaccines, this might be helpful information.
Forward this or post where-ever you like
Herbal Pandemic Preparedness Sources: Farmacy Herbs, Karlo Berger, American Red Cross.
Step One Prevention: If the flu hits your area the best practice is prevention
Tea: Sage, Skullcap, Oregano, Thyme, Elder Flower, Holy Basil, Nettle. 2-3 cups daily
Tincture: Echinacea 2x daily; 2 dropperful (One week on, one week off) Astragulus Tea (3 cups) or Tincture( 2 dropperful 3x daily)
Food; Miso, raw garlic, veggie broths, Cayenne pepper, Turmeric, organic veggies, meats and grains. Stay away from processed foods, food coloring and sugar and alcohol (sugars in the body feed bacteria and viruses) and coffee (coffee dehydrates the body and depletes you of vitamins and minerals that will help fight off pathogens).
Anti-Viral/ Anti-biotic Hand Wash: 10 drops grapefruit seed extract/ 10 drops tea tree essential oil extract in 1 gallon water
Antiseptic Spray for surfaces: Vodka, Water, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Essential oil. Disinfect door knobs switches , handles, toys and other surfaces that are commonly touched.
Air Sanitizer: Simmer water on low heat in a pot with 5 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil or 5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil or Lavender Essential Oil
If you do come down with the flu, then focus on immunity!
Continue tea: Sage, Skullcap, Oregano, Thyme, Elder Flower, Holy Basil, Nettle. (1 quart daily.)
add these tinctures 2 droperfull 3x daily Meadowsweet, Japanese Knotweed, Turmeric (keep up the echinacea and the astragulus)
Colloidal Silver: 2 squirts three times daily
Vitamin C 20000 mg daily
Grapefruit seed Extract: 1/4 teaspoon once daily.
Sleep Aids/ Pain Relief: Valerian, Chammomile, White Willow Bark, Lemon Balm, St. Johns Wort Take 1-2 squirts of tincture as needed or 1-2 cups of tea as needed
Stay home and avoid sharing items with household members (pens, papers, computers, remote control. sheets, towels eating utensils, food.)
Wear a surgical mask when around others.
Clean sheets, bedding and clothes every day.
Take baths with 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops rosemary essential oil and sea salt. If your fever is high, use lukewarm water, if your fever is not high, hot baths are okay. (Remember fevers are our bodies way of heating up to kill pathogens. Very high fevers are dangerous, but a low fever is actually good)
Drink veggie and chicken broths with miso and raw garlic (tons of it!) and a pinch of Cayenne Pepper.
If you have an appetite eat only organic brown rice and greens/ steamed veggies ( the simpler the better with food, if you put food that is hard to digest in your body, your energy goes to digesting, rather than fighting pathogens)
Air sanitizer: Water steam with Eucalyptus Essential Oil or Tea Tree Essential Oil or Lavender Oil (do this in the room every 5 hours)
Caregivers should wear disposable gloves and wearing a mask when giving care.

6:15 pm - HOLY SHIT!!!
|
The REM Tribute at Carnegie Hall with Underthrust and Matt Tobey....
This song has been my mantra since the first time I popped the album Green into the tape player of my mom's old minivan. This is the song I screamed along to driving fast on windy dirt roads at night. This is the song I shouted to the heavens from the top of the dam. This is the song that pounds against the inside of my skull when I feel out of control- reminding me that I am not. This is my singing in the shower song.
I have been singing this song in the privacy of my aloneness for 20 years.
It is crazy to watch myself sing it out loud in a room full of people. It is crazy to hear what it sounds like from the outside of myself.
And then Michael Stipe hugged me.
Around and around we go.
Rule your own world.

7:24 am - The Case FOR Breastfeeding
|
I don't know if any of you read The Atlantic. A few weeks ago an article was published by a woman named Hanna Rosin called The Case Against Breastfeeding. Basically this woman claimed that if a woman felt that breastfeeding her baby wasn't easy and enjoyable for her she may as well give up and formula feed. She claimed that there wasn't scientific evidence saying that breastfeeding was better. She wrote the article as fact in a way that would let shitloads of mothers maybe having a bit of a hard time nursing their babies, it is HARD sometimes, feel that they were off the hook. She slams La Leche League all over the place, as if this nursing support group is a bunch of loony extremists with it's own weird agenda. She bases all of her crap on her and her privileged friends experiences dealing with holier than thou type moms, and claims that there is more pressure to breastfeed than to formula feed (which is bullshit).
Her and her friends even went so far as to make a podcast where they sit around on couches and bad mouth La Leche League, and laugh about how annoying it is to be a nursing mom, and how they wish they had had someone tell them then what Hanna is telling them now- it's not important, you can stop if you want. Bottles of formula are just as good, they say. Pumping is a pointless hassle. (Bullshit)
I could barely get through the podcast. These woman made me sick.
And they had the balls to use my song Tire Swing as the intro, outro, and between segment music.
Without permission.
So I found Hanna Rosin on Facebook, and wrote to her, and told her that I wanted nothing to do with her message and if my song wasn't off the podcast by the next day I was calling a lawyer. She wrote back and said okay. The next day the song was still there and she had posted a blog called "Flamed By Kimya Dawson". A snarky post about how she saw that she had a message from me and was excited, she's a fan, blah blah, lo and behold.
So I wrote back to her leveling with her about how I felt about her message. Not based on medical fact. Undermining feminism and lactivism. Playing queen bee social politic games. Claiming her limited experience as "the norm". And so on and so forth.
She wrote back telling me I didn't know what I was talking about and she did because SHE'S A JOURNALIST.
A journalist telling a musician - "Trust me, I got the facts, I am a journalist!" is comical. For the past 10 years I have watched journalists skew words, mix up facts, and edit interviews for the benefit of their own agenda. There are some solid ones out there, but I am not the type to generalize and assume that (because you have a pencil, a notepad, internet access, and someone to put your story on their site) you know what you are talking about JUST because you are a journalist.
But Hanna Rosin was not going to budge because of what I was saying and I had all these other wars to fight (i.e. Comcast), so I just said- "Fine, I am done". The song was down by this point and I didn't have the energy to keep butting heads. I knew she was wrong and our head-to-head on the FB was going nowhere.
Sigh.
I know that some women have medical issues and can't nurse their babies. Some babies have medical issues and can't latch on. Some women suffer from mental illness or post partum depression. Some women are on medication that isn't compatible with nursing. Some women have to work and can't pump enough. I understand. Not EVERYONE can breastfeed their baby.
But people need to understand that, as far as health and bonding is concerned, it is the best option. And it is worth the struggle. And there is support. Online and off. You have to really look for it sometimes. But it's out there.
It is important to work toward becoming a society that supports breastfeeding, rather than giving up because it's inconvenient. Why write off the people doing this important work? Does it help some people who just don't want to nurse get over the guilt of that choice by declaring the rest of us "boob nazis"?!
I will whip out a boob anywhere, most of you have probably seen at least a peek of my giant milk bags. And it's not because I think public nursing is cool or because I am trying to be extreme. It is because, like pooping and periods, BREASTFEEDING IS NORMAL. WE ARE ANIMALS. THIS IS HOW ANIMALS FEED THEIR BABIES. I am not ashamed. I will nurse in the store, at the park, in the privacy of my own home, and at the merch table. Nursing is the best option. Bottle feeding pumped or expressed breast milk is the next best option. Even if those aren't the most convenient options.
Being a parent isn't easy. It isn't supposed to be easy. And disagreeing with stubborn, snarky journalists isn't easy either but I am not alone. The United States Breastfeeding Committee doesn't agree with her either.
CHECK OUT THEIR RESPONSE LETTER!!!
In your face Hanna Rosin.
In your face.
Oh and, here is what Panda has to say about it...

9:16 am - Tomorrow in Portland
|
I am playing a show tomorrow afternoon at The Village Free School (8660 SE Foster Road Portland, OR). The get together starts at 1pm and is to show support and love for Connor and Tavvi, who you can learn about HERE.
We will be making cards and a video to send to the kids. I will play music and Jake Escher and Sev will also play music.
I feel like I will never fully understand the whole story, but I know that Connor and Tavvi need support as do their friends and families. This will be a show, but also an open forum for people to talk about what is happening. There is a lot of anger and confusion and fear, and it is important for people to have someplace to hug, and to vent, and to lose themselves in art and music.
This is open to the public, but please be respectful. Feel free to bring snacks for sharing and craft supplies for card making.
For more info about the kids:

2:12 am - The Bundles
|
Some of you may know that 8 years ago a band called The Bundles came to be. It's me, Jeffrey Lewis, Jack Lewis, and Anders Griffen. We played a bunch of shows, mostly overseas, but never properly recorded our songs. We have welcomed Karl Blau into the fold and spent the last 2 days at Dub Narcotic Studio recording a 10 song album. Tomorrow we put on the finishing touches.
Really soooo exciting.
Sooooo sooooo exciting.

If you aren't into your kids hearing that don't bring them. If you don't mind they are welcome at the shows. Just be forewarned. You are their parent, not I. You can watch the Grammy's pre-telecast here.
Go 19 minutes into the video to see why I am pooping my pants a little.
I wouldn't have cared if I was never nominated.
I wouldn't have cared if we didn't win.
But winning feels awesomer than I ever could have imagined it would.
What a weird plot twist.

"If you're going to kill yourself remember that I love you. Call me up before you're dead, we can make some plans instead."
This is not an open invitation for people to seek out my phone number and call my house. It is my way of saying that if you feel like your only option is to die, PLEASE let's talk and figure out another way.
I have been known to call fans who were in the midst of a serious crisis. And if someone is seriously feeling hopeless and they call me it isn't going to piss me off.
But if you find my phone number and call me laughing saying "I know this might seem creepy, but..." I will consider it a tremendous violation of me and my family's privacy and don't be surprised if I tell you that you're actions, although "well intentioned", are fucked up.
I am EXTREMELY accessible online. Do not call me just to chat or tell me you like my songs. I appreciate the compliment by email. Over the phone...totally not okay.
I mean unless I actually know you.

Soooo, my Facebook is mostly for people I really know and family and folks I grew up with. Myspace is for everyone. I can't keep my Myspace even remotely organized and I can never find the people I know if I need to get in touch with someone. But let it be known...if I don't friend you on the FB that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to have you kick my ass at Wordscraper.
Bring it on, spirit fingers, bring that shit izzon.
