Breaking Dawn.... something missing...

First I would like to say that about a month ago, I picked up Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse to scan them for my 11 year old cousin to see how appropriate they actually were. I was surprised to find that I fell in love with the books and SM's quality of writing. I quickly devoured all three books, returned to the bookstore and promptly bought and read The Host as well. All 4 books were read cover to cover within 2 days. Since then I have read them all a few times over again.

So naturally I lined up for the new book and devoured it the night it came out. I didn't dislike the book. I know there are a lot of readers that disliked the "message" of the book and the story in general but I wasn't one of them. I was entertained but the book lacked the haunting quality that the first 3 books have. I felt disassociated from all of the characters that I previously had loved.

Add to that confusion in parts of this book due to lack of consistency in the story. Rosalie is suddenly her best friend and the child's most avid protector because of her own selfishness yes... but why does Bella continue to shun Edward and welcome Rose around her? The same rose to whom she is nothing but antagonistic towards in all 3 of the previous books. I think this would have been alleviated if this portion of the book had been written from Bella's point of view, instead of Jacob's.

I actually really liked that she added some of the story from Jacob's point of view, I just wish it hadn't been this part of the story. I feel like I lost the largest part of the story when SM switches perspective just as Bella learns she is pregnant and returns home.

I just felt something was missing. In the end, I no longer related to Bella, Edward,Jacob and never with Nessie. My overall review would be that the book was a good entertaining read but lacked that special haunting quality the first three parts of the story contained.

That being said, I can't wait for Midnight Sun, I hope SM sticks to the format of the first chapter she has available on her website for preview...

Kess

Comfort Food for the Soul..

Lately I have been toying with the idea of music as comfort food. I am sure most if not all of us, use music to associate with different times, people and places.

For me there are some songs that just make me feel safe, take me back to a place or a time when I had no worries and everything was right with the world.

The songs don't even have to be "old" songs although the majority of them are from that time or specific place..

Some examples of my music comfort foods are:
* Anything by John Cougar Mellancamp (reminds me of the summer trips from WA to CA)
* Eurythmics: WA when I was little
* Bob Seger: reminds me of my mom in her 30's
* Eagles: reminds me of my aunts and uncles in CA and the summers while I was there

some newer ones are surprisingly by Kid Rock. Most of his music is not to my taste or not something I would call my favourite, but every once in a while he comes out with one or two or even produces one or two that just have that same feeling I get from listening to some of the songs by the artists I listed above.

most recently I can think of:
Kid Rock: All Summer Long
Kid Rock(Feat. Sheryl Crow): Picture
Uncle Kracker(Produced by KR): Drift Away ( to be fair this is a remake)

There are others... but I have to run to a meeting soon so enough of my ramblings for now.

<3 Kess

in search of a good book.... That I haven't read before...

So I have been tearing through reading material like it was water lately and I have literally gone through about 8 of my favourite series (that I had read before.. over and over)

Over the weekend I picked up
The Innocent Mage
The Awakened Mage
By Karen Miller: http://www.karenmiller.net/

Recommended to me by a few sci-fi fantasy geeks much like myself, but I was sorely disappointed.
The overall plot of the story was good... likable even. The problem was with her writing skills. 75 Pages about a funeral which was not a major plot point. Enough is enough already. I mean, you know it is bad when you find yourself speed reading through books you are reading for leisure rather than homework. So I would recommend them for reading but I also highly recommend glossing over anything that starts to get long winded after about 5 pages. The plot was good, the characters well defined and like/hate-able.

One more that I have been going through very slowly but also recommend is:
Confessions of a Part Time Sorceress
http://www.amazon.com/Confessions-Part-time-Sorceress-Dungeons-Dragons/dp/0786947268/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1216845179&sr=1-4

Now don't be discouraged into thinking the book is bad because I am reading it slowly. That is more because it is not exactly my genere of book and after a bit of reading from the first person that is not a character but a narrator I tend to get bored and want to immerse myself into the wonderful world that is the fantasy my mind creates.

The book is about a girly girl that learns to play and still plays Dungeons and Dragons. It is pretty hilarious, down to the part about her past relationships; where in one story she breaks up with a boyfriend because he leaves her stranded with a flat tire on the freeway so he can finish his raid in WoW to more immersed stories of learning to play and having the DM throw his hands up in surrender after trying to describe a outdoor market their group wanders into and being asked 101 questions about why it isn't an outdoor mall.

Anyways, I will write more about this one once I have finished it.

I grabbed about 15 books this last weekend at the book store so we will see if any of them pan out for me. If you guys have a good suggestions of sci-fi fantasy authors that you like, please share them. Be aware that I read a lot and might come back with a ... already read that one.

Kess

R.I.P Uncle Larry

As some of you know, I just returned home a few days ago after flying to California for my uncle's funeral.

It was definitely something that I will never forget. It sucks when people show their true colours. I felt really bad for my cousin Sheanna, it seemed like everyone showed up with their hands out and wanted something of her Dad's. There was no will either so it is all going through probate which means that immediate family will get equal shares of his belongings and any money he had in the bank. I have a feeling that most of them are going to be greedy ass bastards about all of it.

To top it all off, when she got there, the house had been broken into and a lot of her dad's things had been stolen. Now to put this into perspective, the town I come from in California is no more than 500 people. I believe the consensus says 512 but I am not sure how current the information I have is... so it was most likely someone that knew both my cousin and her dad.. People are just really LAME sometimes.

Anyways, I arrived in CA in time for both the wake and the funeral. It was sad to see my uncle Larry like that, closure is good, but he had already left.

Anyways... I love you Uncle Larry, I wish you were still with us.

J

So randomly I picked up the "young adult" series by Stephenie Meyers: Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse....

Much to my chagrin, I really liked them and now find myself in a holding pattern waiting for the 4th book that comes out on August 2nd. Not that long you say... cept I tear through books reading them faster than most people I know. I read all three books in 2 days (each over 300 pages long).

I also found out that they will be making a movie(have made) of Twilight:

http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810010670/trailer
they seem to be different than the book, but since the author had a hand in making the movie, hopefully it wont ruin the story for me. I am a sap and it is a love story mixed with the supernatural...

After liking this series so much I also picked up her book (adult sci-fi fantasy) called: the Host

Which I liked just as much as the previous series except that it ended entirely too fast for my tastes. I hope she writes sequels to it as well.

As I said... soo many books and soo little time.
I am also still awaiting: A Dance with Dragons from George R.R. Martin - - whom I am convinced is never going to finish the damn series. I have been waiting 2years now. And Damn you Fere for not telling me the series was not finished when I consumed the first 5 books of that series!!!

http://www.georgerrmartin.com/if-update.html

Another author that I really like is quite new (a little more or less than 2 years in publication that I know of) is Brandon Sanderson. I fell in love with his Mistborn series and have been awaiting the 3rd installment since burning man of last year... so quite a while.
http://www.brandonsanderson.com/book/Mistborn-3

It is supposed to be out in October though..... so I can only hope...
These are just a few... I need to find some new series that I have never read ..... where there are a lot of them to keep me occupied until these all come out.

anyways, that was a bunch of boring ramblings
...

<3 Kess

The http://www.uptownplayers.org/nowplaying.htm were pretty good and besides a few songs being shortened I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the thespian playing Claude had a particularly good voice. If you are in Dallas and have a chance to see it, I would recommend it.

Weeeeee Alan found out where they perform the RHPS here in the DFW area.
Every time I have gone upstairs(5th floor at work)for meetings or to visit my cube this week... I get off the elevators or open the door from the stairs and I am hit by a smell. Not a bad smell mind you, but every time have I visited the fifth floor, I was constantly reminded of Burning Man. Now I know that it is getting closer and closer and with a few recent purchases it HAS been on my mind, but this was a bit odd even for me.

Today I finally figured out what it was. The 5th floor smells like people and baby wipes... two smells that together remind me of Burning man :} and if you have ever been... you will know exactly what I am talking about^^

Scent of the weak hmm Dre? hehehe
~Kess
