paid for choreographing? [25 Aug 2008|10:32pm]

ballerinas

[lissie_pissie]
I grew up dancing studio and then when I went to high school, I joined their jazz/funk line. I graduated two years ago and haven't danced since. I got a call out of the blue (I found later that someone recommended/referred her to me), asking if I'd like to teach at a studio this year, and I said yes. When I went in to interview, the owner made it seem that I'd be around to help her - an assistant of sorts, she made it seem like we'd both have equal part and responsibility with all of our classes. I also told her that I'd prefer not to have her completely rely on me to choreograph, since I'm also currently a full-time student and I'm not all that confident in my choreography abilities either. She assured me that I'd never have my own group, that she'd co-teach all of them with me and it wouldn't be a problem. Now she's emailing me telling me to make up quick combinations for all of these classes, and even to make one up for another instructor ("and be sure to bring her a set of notes, too"). She's also having me find music and dance ideas for our competitive lines. I don't mind so much finding music, I just worry I'll end up having to choreograph all of her stuff for her, because since I've been hired, she's been mentioning little things about how she "wants to step back a bit this year", or how "she'll just sort of be there to throw her two cents in", etc.

I never signed up for this. My question is, do I have a right to charge her for the time I spend choreographing and/or looking for music? I get $12/hour and I have about 6 hours a week, is it reasonable to expect to be paid for the time I spend outside of her studio? Since I haven't been on the studio circuit in about 6 years, I don't know the rules on this. I'd like to charge her, I'm completely miserable and I want to quit but I already feel it's too late for her to find a replacement - we start classes on the 15th.

I would really appreciate some direction because I honestly don't know. I didn't assume I'd have to be constantly making up combinations and routines, I just thought I'd be there to demo them, make warm ups, give them critiques, help with costumes & makeup, etc.
