These aren't related; not even a little bit. But to me, they feel related. They're both funny, but in completely different ways. I don't know why, but to me they feel rather bound together. This video is courtesy of kobold of Something Positive fame. I am now in love with this girl.
And this was shared by calamityjon. I don't know who Matthew Harding is, but I love his dance.

Oh, and huge props for the "cultural safeguards". :) Thanks to Feministing for the story. |

Isabella Rossellini (yum) shows us how different little critters reproduce. All of them are interesting, although its interesting exactly how much "sex" in nature amounts to rape... and is it wrong that Snail and Fly both kinda turned me on?
See for yourself
I am seriously considering showing this to the kids as it is pretty damned informative.... but for some reason, that just seems... I don't know... wrong? |

| | Obama Speech: 'A More Perfect Union' | ] |
A transcript of the speech.
It's been passed around the web with memetic speed, so I wasn't going to post it. Why bother, it's been covered. But I've watched it again this morning, which makes nearly a dozen times. I've read it probably half-again that number. It still gives me goosebumps, it still brings a tear to my eye at the appropriate moment. When was the last time I was able to say that about a political or campaign speech.
The answer is... well, never.
Barack is no great orator. He has a thin, almost nasal voice. That just doesn't seem to matter when he exhibits the courage, the bravery of purpose, to deliver this speech--no, not a speech--a monologue, a lecture, an essay. Rather than continue the modern political method of using soundbite-laden, empty, self congratulatory, rhetorical masturbation--Obama chose to speak with substance. To directly answer questions. To respond, in unequivocal terms, to the very sensitive topic of race. It is reminiscent of Roosevelt's Fireside Chats, of Jefferson's Second Inaugural Speech,or the Monroe Doctrine. Honesty, delivered without fluff... but with compassion. You never see that anymore. Like so many things, you don't really notice the void until someone comes and fills it again.
I've been on the fence for a bit now. I felt like there really wasn't an option that I spoke with my voice; no candidate was *right*. There is no one person running that feels the way I do. Well, there's still not; but I am no longer ambivalent. I might not agree with every stance Barack Obama supports, but god help me, I trust the man. I trust that he will do what is in the best interests of a country he loves. I have faith that he will address issues head on; without evasion, artifice, or prevarication. How refreshing might that be?
Just think about it. |

| LN2 Ice Cream at Gamers 4 Giving |
[Mar. 6th, 2008|10:23 am] |
As many of you know, Penguicon brought LN2 Ice Cream to Gamers 4 Giving last weekend... while we were there, DJ Rodimus took video of one of the batches (and a brief interview performed by the absurdly hot Kristin Reilly of PMS Clan) and posted a slightly sped up version of it on YouTube.
It was a huge hit!

| Well Who Isn't Fucking Ben Affleck? |
[Feb. 26th, 2008|07:25 am] |
I'm sure that most of you have already seen Sarah Silverman's very funny message to boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel I'm Fucking Matt Damon, which has done a lot to remind me why I love Matt Damon so much.
Well, Jimmy Kimmel has responded, apparently he's Fucking Ben Affleck... you have to give props to a guy who can get Ben Affleck, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams, Don Cheadle, Josh Groban--and was that Perry Farrell, Joan Jett, Huey Lewis, and Macy Gray?--together for a spoof song. (Oh, and watch for Robin Williams' simulated money shot and Cameron Diaz's illustrative gesture... priceless)
That damned song will be stuck in my head all day now, no doubt. |

Every day I collect more and more random links that are interesting, funny, scary, or otherwise notable. (A piece of trivia: the vast majority of these are sent to me by one man... Nick) The problem is, as a rule, most of them don't stand up on their own. I'd have a series of very abbreviated posts featuring just a link to something I found entertaining. This blournal would become a Twitter account. I would be a sad panda.
So, periodically, I try to post these link dumps with a series of things that are interesting... or at least interesting to me. I fail at doing those as often as not. So my new plan is to try to do one every weekend. My goal is to dump it Friday morning, however, I'll allow myself until Sunday night.
Here is this weekend's:
- Ten Principles of Economics, Translated - as sent to me by the aforementioned Nick, this guy spends a few minutes mocking those basic tenets of economics we were forced to memorized in our college required courses. (And yes, we had to use Mankiw's book for our class)
- So, there's this guy. He lives in DC. And he looks out his window in time to see two crackheads smoking crack and having sex. You know, for crack. Hilarity, in fact, ensues. (From TMBO)
- I don't particularly care for Cracked.com as a rule, but I LOVE their lists. This list of terrifyingly inspirational 80's songs is no exception. Thanks to
cmpriest (the blog of author Cherie Priest, who will be attending Penguicon 6.0 [shameless plug])
- Thanks to
blastedbill and matt_arnold, I now know where I can go to play Smeghead (called Karma Shithead here), Settler of Catan, and Carcassonne (called Xplorers and Toulouse here) online. That means that I can now lose pitifully both in real life and in the relative anonymity of teh intarwebs.
- Jessica Hagy makes me laugh by putting Venn diagrams on index cards. How simple minded am I?
- One of my guilty, time-passing pleasures is perusing the Best of Craigslist. It's like watching Springer... but entertaining.
- I don't enjoy the bible. I even less enjoy the Lolcat Bible. But it does make me laugh. Here's my favorite entry, to date. Job 1. (thanks again, Nick)
- Sweet Jesus Fucking Christ (thank you TMBO)
- No matter what side of DRM and music appropriation you fall on, this screed is a must read (rhyme unintentional). While not all profoundly logical, it's certainly something to think about. At some point I'd love to set aside the time to do a more in depth review of it... but I know I won't... so go read it yourself and let me know *your* thoughts. It's easier that way. :)
Happy weekend folks. |

| Daily Show Archives |
[Oct. 19th, 2007|03:21 pm] |
I'm sure you've all heard, but The Daily Show has now posted all of the episodes since John Stewart started. This means I can see all of my favorite episodes of Even Stephven: Alas, the rest of my favorites aren't up, because they predate John Stewart:- Weather, Good or Bad
- Islam vs. Christianity
- Medicinal Marijuana
- The Iraq War Retrospective
Hopefully, those will be posted soon.
While I'm link dumping, I laughed my ass off! (Totally not work safe) |

| Fourth of July Video |
[Jul. 3rd, 2007|09:22 am] |
Each year, my father puts on a pretty amazing fireworks display. I have posted some video of this years, to include yet another fireworks misfire. No forest fires, huge fireballs, exploding cars, or chain reactions... but pretty fun stuff, nonetheless. The quality is pretty terrible, since it was taken on my camera-phone... but hopefully I'll be able to get a good digital rip of my mother's quality copy, at which point I'll post the whole thing. |

| Youmacon |
[Nov. 7th, 2006|04:35 pm] |
Okay, I will certainly have better updates at some point soon, but until then, here's what ya get :P
Youmacon was fun, but wore me the hell out. About 5 hours of sleep from Friday at 6AM to Sunday at 6PM was a bit punishing. I'm just beginning to get my sleep schedule somewhere near on track. I got a chance to see how a ConSuite is run (and I certainly would like to be involved in helping staff the ConSuite at some other local conventions now that I've seen how it is done to some degree), work with Open Cola, meet John Guest (who is exactly as amiable in person as he seems to be), and in general have a great time.
Some YouTube fun:
John Guest and matt_arnold making Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
Some random Youmacon footage that includes some ConSuite footage (and thatguychuck and Andrew at about the 2 minute mark.)
Oh, and Liquid Nitrogen tanks are frickin' heavy. |
