In just two short weeks, MPCon are throwing a massive LAN party at the EMU student center in Ypsilanti. I'll be attending, and so should you.
Why?
To participate in Trackmania Nations, Counterstrike Source, Guitar Hero 3, Call of Duty 4, and Warsow tournaments?
To play those games, plus Audiosurf, Quake III Gridiron, Team Fortress II, Plasma Pong, and dozens of other games with a group of trash talking, caffeine swilling fellow gamers?
How about to visit Penguicon's tabletop gaming table featuring games from Mayfair, Steve Jackson Games, Looney Labs and more?
And if that's all not enough, just do it to visit me.
In all seriousness, the LAN party is amazingly well put together, and never fails to be a fantastic time. It is July 25-27, and for $25 you get full access to the LAN and the tabletop area, typically pizza on Saturday night, and a chance to win a ton of really awesome prizes. The last full-sized event I attended, the guys gave out thousands of dollars in tournament prizes, then thousands more as "door prizes" and "raffle" prizes.
Go to their website for more information, or feel free to ask me! |

| LAN Party Tournaments |
[Apr. 5th, 2008|09:13 am] |
As most of you are aware, the guys at MPCon are bringing their LAN party expertise to Penguicon. Well, they've just released a list of some of the tournaments and games...Tournaments will include: - Trackmania Nations(available free here) - Never in my life have I enjoyed sucking at a game as much as Trackmania. It is an amazingly well done game, and lends itself brilliantly to LAN party play.
- Quake 3 Gridiron (available free on the LAN) - Imagine sitting in a room with around 20 fellow players talking trash while playing football with guns. That's Quake 3 Gridiron, in a nutshell. It is the game that started me coming to LAN parties, and it is still my favorite part of any LAN. If you haven't tried it, you are truly missing out.
- Warsow (available free here) - A free, open source, first person shooter with a cool cell-shaded look. I don't even play FPSs, but I still fire this up on occasion from my flash drive(!?) and play around.
- Plasma Pong (available free here) - Okay, I get it, we can't say Pong anymore or Atari will whack us in the peepee... but this game is insanely addictive. It's like that tennis-clone Atari game, only with the added mechanic of being able to fire a stream of plasma to divert the path of the ball... oh, and the mild PCP trip going on in the background.
- AudioSurf (free demo available here) - Until Tuesday, I'd never played this before. I've played it for HOURS since, and it has become the newest place to blow absurd loads of time. Queue up your favorite song from your music library and surf downhill in time with the music collecting glowy blocks. Then look up at the clock and realize it's time to go to work!
So, sign up now!

| LN2 Ice Cream at Gamers 4 Giving |
[Mar. 6th, 2008|10:23 am] |
As many of you know, Penguicon brought LN2 Ice Cream to Gamers 4 Giving last weekend... while we were there, DJ Rodimus took video of one of the batches (and a brief interview performed by the absurdly hot Kristin Reilly of PMS Clan) and posted a slightly sped up version of it on YouTube.
It was a huge hit!

| Calling All Computer Gamers (and Halo 3 XBoxxers) |
[Jan. 22nd, 2008|12:15 pm] |
As many of you are aware, MPCon is throwing a small (for them) version of their enormously successful LAN party at this year's Penguicon. Well, why wait until April when MPCon and the Gamers Outreach Foundation are teaming up to bring you Gamers for Giving, a massive merger of two very successful gamer parties.

Not only will there be a 250 seat bring-your-own-pc LAN party done as only MPCon knows how, full of tournaments with kickass prizes and free gifts; but there will be a 128 gamer Halo 3 tournament on XBox. Tournaments that I've been informed about include Halo 3, Team Fortress 2, and some quick-draw challenges, not to mention the ever present Trackmania Nations and Counter-Strike 1.6 and Source tourneys.
It is only $25 to attend either the LAN party or the Halo 3 tournament... or $40 gets you admission to both. I can't tell you what an awesome value this is; hell, at MPCon XVIII, I probably walked out of the doors with $50 worth of free stuff in return for my $25 admission, they run that nice a show.
But just to add value, Penguicon has agreed to come by and make some Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream for the hungry gaming masses. That's right, Commander Tux and a few ice cream making mad scientists will be there whipping up batches of LN2 frozen treats for all and sundry... and we'll be handing em out FREE to all of the gamers.
If that wasn't enough, the whole shebang is for a fantastic cause. All proceeds will be given to the local branch of the Autism Society of America.
What, gaming, gifts, prizes, ice cream, and charitable donations aren't enough? Fine, I also heard a rumor that MPCon's very own Nick and Dave will be going down on the first 100 registrants!
Okay, it's possible that I made the last bit up... but seriously, what more could you possibly want? Go here for more information then SIGN UP!
(And while you're at it, you might want to register for Penguicon and their LAN party there, before the limited slots are all filled.)

| MPCon LAN Party |
[Aug. 13th, 2007|11:46 am] |
As many of you are aware, MPCon is hosting a LAN Party at Penguicon 6.0. I personally attended their last one and had an absolute blast. Well, if you want to get a taste of how the good folks at MPCon do their thing, now's your chance.
MPCon XIX will take place August 24 - 26 at Eastern Michigan University's Student Center. This is particularly exciting because with this new location comes a ton more room, more power, and most importantly, a fully stocked food court! If memory serves, there's even a Taco Bell in there.
The cost is only $25 to play alongside 200 fellow gamers from Friday at noon until Sunday at 10AM. In addition to over 40 hours of gaming, you get dinner Saturday night (attendance permitting) and the chance to win a ludicrous amount of prizes... be it through competition or through various raffles.
For more information, or to sign up, check them out at mpcon.org or shoot me an email and I'll put you in contact with the right folks. I hope to see you guys out there! I will personally assure you that you will have a fantastic time.

| For the Q3 Gridiron Folks |
[Jun. 19th, 2007|02:48 pm] |
This will probably only be interesting to fans of FPSes and Q3 Gridiron, but I forgot to post it in my recap:
So I'm playing Q3 Gridiron with a large group of gamers. There are 16 of us, and among the group, I am literally the ONLY person who doesn't game at least occasionally, and most of the people are pretty solid on first-person shooters. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time getting blowed-up, missing, running around with the football in the wrong direction... fun stuff like that. I managed to get some nice kills and score a few touchdowns here and there as I improved, but my personal favorite moment was one in which I got blown all to hell.
Both teams had managed to kill themselves off until it was just Jeff against me. So he has the ball, and with just a few seconds left, he is trucking toward the end-zone. I am running behind him steadily missing him over and over. He's not even bothering to dodge, he's running in a perfectly straight line... mocking me! I had given up hope of ever catching him when he stopped, turned around, faced the ground, and rocket jumped through the uprights. On his way through, as he left the ground, he angled his rocket launcher up and deftly blew me to smithereens. The last thing I saw, as the "down" ended, was the screen from his point of view-- my exploded body visible in the distance as "You have killed Pedo Bear" appeared on the screen then dissolved away-- as he sailed between the uprights to not just score, but get the extra point as well.
Ouch. |

| Fear and Loathing in Dearborn |
[Jun. 18th, 2007|11:00 pm] |
Back to the grind after a weekend spent at MPCon. I promised some form of an update, and an update you will get, although let me get this out of the way up front. I am going to RUIN most of the names here, because I suck at names almost as bad as I suck at Quake. I'm just sayin'

| Everything in Moderation, Especially Sleep |
[Jun. 11th, 2007|11:09 pm] |
*Yawn* Just finished another round of Calc homework (well, as much as I'm willing to do tonight). An hour or two of studying today's lesson before I crash and I should manage to pull off my 4.5 hours of sleep that I try to keep as my minimum, just in time to start all over again tomorrow at 5:30am. I just have to make it through 2 more weeks, and I'll be all set. Two more weeks.
This class will be, I am nearly 100% certain, the end of my 4.0. I'm bummed, but, it's the cost of taking Calc in the Spring I suppose. I'll still pull an easy high-to-mid B... but it's not an A... *shrug* I guess.
I bitch about it, but it's kinda nice to really push myself for a bit. I guess I'm an imbecile that way.
A series of random thoughts:- The new Penguicon website is up and running, thanks to Ron and Matt for making this happen. There's still much in the way of content that needs to be added, but it's infinitely more useful than the old one.
- MPCon is this weekend. I'll be there helping out and losing my ass off at some Trackmania and Quake Gridiron, so come on out.
- Ger is going to NY with me at the end of this month for the weekend. Girlfriend meeting the parents. Always a good time. With luck, my father will refrain from moo-ing or making reference to a non-existent hunchback over dinner to this one. :)
- I'm probably going to have to dump my Summer Telecom class, since it looks like its going to fail to have enough people to actually happen. I hate having to take filler classes to maintain my full-time status. The only downside to this school, in my opinion, is that the classes SUCK to schedule sometimes, especially the higher level ones.
- I have read many of your responses, both in comments and emails, to my last couple of posts. I assure you that I will respond to those that require response, I'm sure I'll have time soon. Sorry I'm so pokey on correspondence lately.
Peace and goodnight. |
