[mobile]Fun and Games [Jul. 17th, 2008|06:49 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood |Ponderous]

I love fun. As far as declarations go, it isn't very catchy, novel, or even very exciting to say; it's a thought every kindergartener manages to realize long before they are able to reliably tell what fun even is, but there you go: I love fun.

I try to find it pretty much wherever I can. Really, EVERYTHING can be fun, it is more a state of mind than a series of circumstances. I mean, if I am in a great mood, every interaction with another human can be fun. Fun limited only by how much I'm willing to MAKE it fun.

As such, I spend much of each day creating and playing little games for my amusement. For example, there is a person on my list of GTalk contacts that puts a nice, inspirational quote up for her status each day. Every time I notice a new one, I delight in finding a quote about the same topic, but the opposite of inspirational (and if I can't find one, I make one) to set as my status. Additionally, on a day in which I am spending a great deal of time interacting with my friends via IM, I'll start a game in which I will respond to each person in only a specific way, so person A gets responses that are largely only in question format, person B gets responses in hyperbole, person C gets responses whose first character begins all with the same alphabetical letter, etc. There are millions of such games I play routinely.

The best part is, much like that old saw about the infectuous nature of a smile, merely entertaining yourself has a cascading effect. If nothing else, your elevated mood elevates the moods of those around you, but it rarely stops there. Often, your bit of self amusement might be funny to onlookers, or create a fun story for onlookers to tell at a party. There is no way of knowing where the effects of your fun little game might end. Equally importantly, you would be surprised at how much such little games will boost YOUR mood, making you much more relaxed, tolerant, and fun to be around.

So much like I discussed in a past post about finding the humor in life, I again challenge you...but this time, don't just amuse me--amuse the world. Find some way to make an interaction with someone else fun for YOU. Don't worry about whether or not others might find it funny, amuse yourself. Hang toilet paper from the back of your pants, and when people point it out to you, say "Thank god, it kept falling off earlier" then walk away. Wave to strangers until they wave back. Don't give up until they do. Whatever you do, have fun. That is your homework... make some fun for yourself and, if you feel so inclined, tell me about it.

Now go forth, have fun!

[mobile]On our way home... [Jun. 29th, 2008|03:02 pm]

[Current Mood |Tired]

Ger and I are sitting in an Italian joint in Mentor, OH waiting for a much needed meal before we finish the last few hours of our trip home.

The trip has largely gone well, despite brief torrential downpours during which visibility was barely a car length.

[mobile]Vacation [Jun. 24th, 2008|09:05 am]

[Current Mood |Lazy]

Today starts the first vacation I've taken in many, many years. While I've always had time off in the past, I typically have filled it with some form of work that was at least full-time in quantity, but not now! I have one class this semester and the only work I have is composed of side jobs that add up to part-time, at best and can be done whenever.

Time, for once, is on my side.

[mobile]Is the weekend over? [Jun. 10th, 2008|03:03 pm]

[Current Mood |Exhausted]

So tired.

The weekend was a lot of fun. Friday, Ger and I had a very entertaining dinner with [info]rbradakis, [info]sheryl67, [info]atdt1991, and [info]blue_lucy followed by a brief visit to the SMOS dinner (where we entirely failed to do a SMOScast).

Saturday, we lunched at Castle Bradaki before going to Aaron's birthday party. After much fun there, it was back to Sheryl and Randy's for some Boom Blocks (your mom likes Boom Blocks) and rainy evening fun.

Sunday was the Stilyagi pic-a-nic., Penguicon ConCom, and ConFusion ConCom. Despite Hurricane Screw-Your-Picnic, a great time was had and much got done.

I got some bad news on Thursday...due in no small part to the severe overstaffing of the contract folk for the summer semester, I'll have no contract for July and early August. Ouch. If you know anyone shopping for some work to be done, let me know. I'm pretty versatile. ;)

Well, my "camera person" punked out, so unless there is someone floating around with no work on Friday, a camera, and minimal self respect, I will be unable to meet the challenge.

I really need to buy a cam one of these days.

[mobile]MARCON, Saturday [May. 24th, 2008|03:27 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood |Tired]

Taking a break before I dive back into the con fun. We got down here around 7:30 or 8:00 after a slightly late start (later than I wanted, but but earlier than I expected), and the trip down was fun.

MARCON Friday night was utterly dead. There was rumor of one (1!) party, but nothing other than that. We all hung out at the bar for the evening then adjourned to the room for late-night, semi-asleep conversation until the wee hours.

I got a chance to sleep in a tiny bit, then back into it. At some point I want to hit a nap quickly, so I'm getting ready to donate some blood, pass out, then stay up late & party. More to come!

[mobile]Evaluate This! [May. 8th, 2008|07:06 pm]

[Current Mood |Sleepy]

There exists an element xP(x) where x is students and P(x) is a student about to pass out from a combination of boredom, exhaustion, and heat. The domain is this class.
The statement is true, because I am that student. It is not uniquely true, because I am not the only one whose head keeps drifting perilously close to the desk.

It doesn't help that the Swedish Chef is teaching this class... "Hurka burka hurka burka salad"

One more hour to go.

The hotel wrap meeting is over, and all is well. I'm utterly exhausted and not looking forward to reacclimating to real life tomorrow, but for now, I'm just going to concentrate on resting up and doing what I gotta do to get back into the swing.

Pure awesome.

Day negative 1 of the con has drawn to a close, and I am wiped. Quite a few hotel snafus managed to spring up, but all were very easily quashed. Tomorrow will, no doubt, be another story.

Lots of fun folks are out here, and so far it has been a blast. If you haven't made plans to be here... Well get here!

[mobile]Word We Shall Not Say [Mar. 17th, 2008|07:13 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood |frustrated]

It was annoying when the feminists stole 'shrill' from us as a "gender coded" word (meaning that it is, secretly, used to shame them as women...because all women are supposed to be shrill?). And both 'clean' and 'pure' (not to mention 'innocent') are all strictly verboten because...well...clearly you can't use metaphorical language to describe a female without it referring to the status of her vagina (hrmm, that generalization about men is probably NOT sexist, right?)

Well, add 'rant' to the list. That's right, rant is now a gender-coded term according to Katha Pollitt, author of Virginity or Death!. That's right...my use of the term rant apparently speaks volumes of my inherently sexist nature.

Feminists, could you please spend less time trying to cleanse the English language of offensive terms and more time actually trying to educate young men and women about the disparities that actually go on? Frankly, you suck at the former and could spend a bit more time with the latter.

[During a brief re-read, I note that I use the words 'cleanse'...clearly pointing out that women should be doing household chores...and 'suck'...an obvious wink and nod to the fact that women should be fellating me!! Oh Noes! Damn you, English language, with your metaphores and secret misogyny!)

The Engagement [Mar. 9th, 2008|10:45 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | tired]

As I mentioned all too briefly on Thursday, Geralyn and I are now engaged. What I didn't do was go into any degree of detail--something I hope to remedy now.

The specifics as to the proposal are sadly unexciting to anyone not present. I am quick to make a joke about most things, but not how important Ger is to me--and the kids as well--or how much I want her to be a part of my life...so I played it straight. No jokes, no tricks. We went to a restaurant that was the site of one of our first dates, I told her how I felt, took a knee, and asked.

We are looking at the fall of 09 for the date...although we've done no real planning. The ceremony will be in MI, although we haven't decided where yet.

In short, I am very happy. To steal a bit from what I told Ger on Thursday, following my first marriage, there was no question in my mind that I'd never again marry. It seemed a foolish risk to take without any real payoff. Without knowing Ger very long--only about two years--I can't imagine living without her. My life is not as enjoyable when she is not around. Marriage to her doesn't feel like a risk; it feels like a necessity.

Anyhoo... There will inevitably be more to come, but first... Sleep!!!
