I flat need a laptop now, which is depressing. Actually, I flat need a computing platform of some sort, a laptop would be pretty nice... a good sub-laptop would be stellar. So, I'm saving up my tin cans and pennies for this sexy beast. It runs SUSE 10, has a 1.2GHz processor with a GB of RAM (which, on SUSE, should be plenty), 120GB SATA HDD, 802.11a/b/g internal, and an actual VGA monitor out in addition to its USB/Mic/headphone/rj45 ports and built-in camera.

Oh, and it is 10"x6.5"x1" and weighs in at 3lbs. Of course, it also weighs in at $550 + shipping/tax, so all said and done, I need to scrape together $620. If I sell... carry the one... 3 months of plasma... this little beauty is mine!

I really like that, I think I'm going to start calculating things in terms of months of plasma, it makes them seem cheaper. :)

For what I do, a GB of RAM does me fine for XP... and SUSE 10 is lighter in footprint than XP (and most of the programs are lighter yet).

openoffice tends to be a bit memory heavy. ram is cheap these days though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145172

Holy crap, that *IS* cheap. OpenOffice is a bit heavier than many of the other apps, but it runs efficiently enough from my flash drive on our 1G XP machines at work; but down the road I have no doubt I'll want to bump the RAM, and at those prices, it won't be hard to do at all (although it is minorly depressing that 2GB is the max RAM it can support).

Hey, that's pretty slick! I've been kicking around the idea of picking up one of these, or maybe one of these for a while, but your little HP guy has a bunch more storage while not being much larger. Let me know what you think of it, eh?

VIA C7-M ULV processor (1.2 GHz, 128 KB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)

I don't know if you've looked closely into the VIA cpu, but the performance blows. Just something to consider.

Happy hunting. :)

That's really the trade-off for a subnotebook, though, isn't it? Slightly worse performance than you'd expect from a 1.2GHz... but in exchange, lower draw, lower heat, quieter. Still, I'm hoping by the time I get enough money to buy such a thing the Isaiah is out and about... or one of the other such processor options.

This is by no means the perfect system, but it was the necessary trade-off. The biggest screen of the sub-notebooks (at 8.9") and an almost full-sized keyboard for my sausage fingers (95%) were big selling features. 120G of storage and Linux OS were also big selling points. If you're buying a sub-notebook for high-end performance, you might be buying wrong. :)

The rest of the machine is certainly impressive from a price/feature standpoint. I'm used to these though. http://tinyurl.com/387q7b Much higher price, but man do they perform.

Wow, that's a LOT of plasma though! Hehe. I batted the idea of a full lappy around, but when I had one I never carried it because it was just too big and I hate having a bag with me... I'm hoping this'll be small enough that I'll actually carry it.

Depends on yer size, but I pull $50 a week ($30 then $20), and when they're in need it goes up to $60 ($30 and $30)

Indeed. Of course, several months of this resulted in collapsed veins and I still have semi-permanent scarring on the inside of my right elbow.

And of course, where do you sell the plasma?

At the moment, about 270lbs (+/- about 20 pounds on any given month)... and I go to the place in Oak Park whose name I'll have to look up later.

Plasma sales economics

(Link)

I make that place to be 18 miles from your place, and 20 miles from mine. Was hoping for something closer, like Dearborn.

If the pay is linear with the donor's mass, then I'd get about $100 a month or $25 a week. It's effectively a two-gallon run for me, which would cost me $8 or so. It might have still been worth it, except that there are other not so visible expenses in running a car, the bulk of them being the purchase price over a finite lifetime in miles. For commuting purposes I used to cost out transportation at 20 cents a mile, in the 1990s. If I'm lucky, I might get away with 30 cents/mile total, effectively converting vehicle miles-life into cash. This makes the cost of a single trip around $12, eating up almost half of what I would get based on my own mass.

For you of course the economics work out much better, on the face of it. But the website says that you can donate up to twice a week. Assuming that you're doing so, you're making two trips to get that $50, which imposes the same percent-cost as I just described for myself, give or take a bit - I don't know the cost of operating that Jeep of yours, but I suspect the total cost per mile is not far from that of my minivan. Better plan on twice the time for getting that laptop, and save some of that cash for eventually getting a replacement vehicle.* And of course, having to make two trips to get my $25 would make the idea almost completely infeasible for me.

* Of course you can bike there, adding an extra 3 hours a week (1.5 hr per trip over and above what it would take to drive there) to the time spent in this exercise.

Well, it did look useful to me, for a while.

Haha, one of my instructors used to say that if you have to guess at more than one fact, stop guessing because you're wrong. This is a beautiful example... More than 50% of your conjecture is inaccurate to varying degrees...your assumption of a linear pricing model, vehicle costs, travel distances, and the math that summarized the whole thing. But you were close-ish: in a vacuum, I'd have to add a week to my estimate.
