I've been feeling so crappy that I've been entirely ignoring some really exciting stuff coming up...so allow me to rectify that (or begin to) by talking about the new summer "relaxacon", ConStruct.
The seeds for this brilliant idea began as Plaidicon in July of 2008, when a group of friends got together for a weekend of fun, crafts, and enjoying one-another's company. The problem we ran into was that of space. We simply did not have enough room for all of the people that wanted to join us for the fun. We got to kicking around the idea of throwing this summer shindig in a place that is more spacious.
At the same time, I was in my second year of batting around the notion of a low-impact, minimal planning convention. A convention where everyone could sort of plan "their" part of it and just relax. An idea not unlike that of a "relaxacon", but with some actual programming and activities.
Over the course of the next six-months, ConStruct was born: a summer "relaxacon", but one where you can, as we say, "invent your own fun" with an amazing amount of ease and freedom. The goal, of course, is for everyone to bring what they want to do, and see who else wants to join them. Scheduling and room spaces will be fluid, and all will revolve around a very simple schedule in the public space and a consuite where everyone can reconvene to refuel, recaffeinate, and regroup...and other words that start with re.
So we formed a small board of directors to take care of the financial and contractual stuff, and the entirety of the programming has been turned over to you. Yes you! We are taking care of the consuite (unless there happens to be someone out there who says "hey, I want to run a consuite") so that you will have the food and drink required to do some pretty amazing programming for each other...and boy have you guys already come through in a big way! Some of the awesome that is piling up:- Rock Band - Since Rock Band has been such a huge part of our social scene, there is certainly going to be much Rock Band-ing and rock band programming!
- Rock Band photo shoot -
davehogg on LJ has discussed doing a photo shoot of themed bands that compete. Follow the link for more information. - 80's Dance -
ellalthea, sheryl67, and earthenwood (among others) are throwing an 80's Prom themed Dance with prizes for best costume/dress and (I guess) other stuff. Look to the blog for more information (when it becomes available) or start a thread if you want to contribute ideas. - Construct-A-Concert - Tom Smith (
filkertom) is going to play a show that consists of requests made by folks that are attending the con! Given the (hopefully) small-ish attendance for the convention, I can think of no better way to see Tom play in a small, informal setting than this August. More information right here. - Craft Events - With folks as crafty as
sheryl67 and earthenwood involved, you'd have to be crazy to think that there wasn't going to be some awesome crafts-type-stuff going on, and it's looking like we won't be disappointed. Check out their thread on crafty programming to see what is being planned or to plan your own craft project. I, for one, would love to see a stitch 'n bitch or a knitting group pop in. :) - ConRunning - Of course, our programming wouldn't be complete without some events related to running conventions and such in Southeast Michigan.
matt_arnold is going to host SMOF Camp, an Open-Spaces method for meeting to discuss topics related to conrunning. Matt describes the idea in his blog entry and will hopefully start a thread in the constructacon blog where your ideas, suggestions, and questions can be posted. For what it's worth, I'm considering throwing in some discussions of budget management and contract negotiation during the weekend as well. - Tons of other shit! - This isn't even close to a complete list. I've heard talk of marionette shows, LARPs, board gaming (I understand Penguicon is loaning its extensive gaming library to the effort), movies, and all manner of randomness.
Now, the important bit is...what do YOU want to do? It's so easy to start... if you have something you want to do, start a thread in the blog on LJ, email it to us on our mailing list, or join the mailing list/check the website for information about upcoming planning meetings. If you want, you can even join the currently very boring but hopefully one-day exciting IRC channel...#construct-a-con on irc.freenode.net. Whatever you do, though, join us for what is surely going to be a fantastic time.
I, for one, am excited as hell! |
