The Medical Update [Jul. 14th, 2009|10:10 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood |awake]

So, last week was the Week of Medical Testing(TM) culminating in Friday's visit to find out what exactly is wrong with my innards.

As it turns out, we still don't know.

We have ruled out a bunch of stuff, to include Hepatitis B & C, Hemachromatosis, Celiac's, Cirrhosis, Lymphoma, and a slew of other stuff. My bloodwork came back almost entirely without concern. The doctor pointed out that my "bad" cholesterol was slightly high and my "good" cholesterol was slightly low, but nothing that living on real food and some amount of exercise won't fix. Sadly, exercise isn't really in the cards until they find out what is causing the gut pain; but eating healthier is something I can and will do. The trick is doing so once school/work/etc all starts back up in full swing.

On an only barely related topic, I am amused by how politically correct our society has become; it has even invaded medical science. The my doctor pointed out my cholesterol issue stating that I am "very healthy" although my "cholesterol is somewhat a problem." She then pointed out that such things "are to be expected of people on the heavier side."

That's right, I'm on the heavier side. When I pointed out that I was fat she actually looked vaguely embarrassed as she nodded agreement. If I'm on the heavy side of anything, it's the heavy side of fat...or obese...whatever. This softening of the language so those of us that are fat can feel like we're merely "husky" or "heavy" or "full figured" is crap. If we were really proud of our bodies, we wouldn't use fake terms to describe them...but I digress.

At any rate, I have been referred to a specialist to scope and biopsy my colon (doesn't that sound like a good time), a lab to x-ray my spine and drop off a shit sample (ooh, another good time, shitting in a bowl), and a urologist to discuss the cysts in my balls (barrel...of...fun). This all leaves me even LESS concerned than I was. I mean, it is pretty much none of the life threatening things I was lead to expect or prepare for, so at this point, it is all good. Next week, when I get some of this work squared, I'll go throw even more money at doctors and labs and pursue this thing further. In the meantime, the pain has existed long enough that I have managed to add it to my list of day-to-day pain and it is almost background noise. It is annoying, it skews my sleep schedule, and it means I have to be careful planning ahead because I never know what amount of pain I'll be in on any given day, but it is manageable. I just wish I could cycle. I miss it. :(

I guess, this is the long version of "nothing more to report." Hopefully, I'll have more soon.

Too Much Medical Info... [Jul. 1st, 2009|11:08 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood |anxious]

So, I went to the doctor's office yesterday to achieve two objectives: 1) interview a prospective doctor as my primary physician and 2) investigate this gut pain.

With respect to number 1, I called quite a few doctors until I found one that not only had a helpful and polite staff but was willing to hop on the phone with me for a minute and answer a few questions. After talking with her in-office, I have my new doctor. She is friendly, professional, and patient with my stupidity (like forgetting my vasectomy in my history until the middle of my testicular exam..."oh, shit, I had a vasectomy too!"). I am a fan...well, as much a fan as I can be of a doctor.

Number 2 is somewhat more an issue. After giving a history, talking about the pain, and discussing other things that I didn't relate but she felt was important, I'm being sent for a battery of tests next Wednesday. She really wanted me to go in this week, but my schedule and that of the testing facility foiled that plan.

To further add layers of concern, she found a sack during my testicular exam (heh, I know, laugh...I did) that she wants ultrasounded. So I'm getting tests for Heps B and C, Celiac, various ultrasounds, lots of other blood work, she checked my urine and the inside of my ass...In general, I'm getting a good going-over.

Good times.

That's what is going on, at the moment.

Thoughts on Humor [Jun. 29th, 2009|11:25 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood |awake]

If there exists a humorous statement 'A' such that statement A is funny, there exists a number 'x' representing a number of repetitions of A so that Ax is decidedly not funny.

Assuming this to be true, there exists a quantity 'y' that is greater than 1 for which Axy is not just funny again, but it is actually funnier that A alone.

I call this the 'your mom...' principle in honor of [info]atdt1991.

Discuss.

Also for discussion...what the hell is with bathroom-stall-pissers. We're in a public restroom, it is empty, and you pass by the row of urinals to stand in an open stall and piss in a toilet (ostensibly on the seat)?

Just so you know, if you are standing in a stall pissing, I assume you have an absurdly small dick.

Why do people do this?

Getting some writing done [Jun. 19th, 2009|05:17 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | okay]

It actually feels nice to get something accomplished, even if it is something of utterly no consequence. I've hammered out two more stories which, coupled with the editing I've gone through already to shape 7 other previously written ones up, feels like a fairly major achievement the way I've been feeling as of late. I've also whipped together some front matter and a brief introduction that needs some heavy-handed revising. In all, I have some 40 pages of the 70-100 that I would like to include squared away.

I've also spent some time tooling around Lulu to get a better handle on the specifics of the book's format itself. It looks like I'm going to be doing a "trade paperback" sized paperback with the normal paperback binding. All said and done, it is looking more and more like this thing can EASILY be sold for $10 per copy. That makes me happy...because at the end of the day, I think this is a pretty neat thing that I can share with friends in a pretty inexpensive way. The only thing I'm trying to hash out now is how I want to set up the distribution thing...but that is a concern for later. For now, my main concern is getting it made.

As far as getting it made, I'm starting to feel pretty good about that. It was nice having Ger sit and read the proof copies of the stories that have been online for quite a while and that she has no doubt heard dozens of time and laugh out loud...a lot. Some of the new stories have elicited the same reaction from others who have read them...bursts of actual audible laughter. There are few better feelings.

Well, back to writing some of the harder to write stories. I would love to have the bulk of the writing done by the end of next week so that I can really work on formatting and assimilating Ger's drawings into the text.

This is a Jer who is more excited than sick for the day. Yay! :)

An Idea: Fraught with Peril, Ego, and Win! [Jun. 17th, 2009|09:38 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | chipper]

Today I was jerking around with Lulu because I got this wild idea that I wanted to publish a book of my fun anecdotes just to keep on my bookshelf. Then I saw how cheaply it could be done and thought, wouldn't it be cool if I bought a couple of extra and gave them away as gifts—egocentric gifts, but gifts nonetheless. Then, as such ideas tend to, the idea grew. "What if," thought I, "I made the book kinda snazzy and made it available for anyone to buy. It's not like it would cost me anything aside from time."

And things were off to the races. So here's the plan:

I am going to make a book of my anecdotes. The goal is about 80 to 100 pages of material of which around half is going to be from the stuff I have online and the other half will be new (to print, at least... I'm confident that if you have been hanging around me at parties for the last couple of years, there's little new to hear). I'm going to do it as a trade paperback and Ger has agreed to illustrate it with some fun drawings and such. Oh, and it looks like I can do this thing for less than $10 a crack (I'm hoping for under $10 after shipping, since this is not for profit or anything...but we'll see how prices shape out).

Now, some fun:

I have two problems, one relates to content. I know that certain stories are pretty much a given. Messy the Pooh, my account of Manscaping, the tale of the pyromaniac exterminator, and the list of 15 reasons I didn't make father of the year in 2008 are sure to make the nod. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else to put in there. I figure that I should have at least 15 or 20 total stories, so I have to come up with a bunch more; either from those I've already written or others I have yet to write. My second problem? I have to come up with a fun title.

This is where you come in. I plan on having an acknowledgments page in this thing, and the person who submits the title that I ultimately use, along with everyone who suggests a story that I actually use in the book (either already online or one that isn't but should be) will be thanked on that page. Think of it..countless..umm..ones of people will see your name in print in a book full of incoherent rambling and copious obscenity.

Such joy this will bring to your family.

With any luck, this will be a low-impact way to pass time while I'm home feeling "meh"...and certainly more interesting than playing video games. BOOOORIIING.

ConStruct Excitement [Jun. 17th, 2009|04:09 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | awake]

I've been feeling so crappy that I've been entirely ignoring some really exciting stuff coming up...so allow me to rectify that (or begin to) by talking about the new summer "relaxacon", ConStruct.

The seeds for this brilliant idea began as Plaidicon in July of 2008, when a group of friends got together for a weekend of fun, crafts, and enjoying one-another's company. The problem we ran into was that of space. We simply did not have enough room for all of the people that wanted to join us for the fun. We got to kicking around the idea of throwing this summer shindig in a place that is more spacious.

At the same time, I was in my second year of batting around the notion of a low-impact, minimal planning convention. A convention where everyone could sort of plan "their" part of it and just relax. An idea not unlike that of a "relaxacon", but with some actual programming and activities.

Over the course of the next six-months, ConStruct was born: a summer "relaxacon", but one where you can, as we say, "invent your own fun" with an amazing amount of ease and freedom. The goal, of course, is for everyone to bring what they want to do, and see who else wants to join them. Scheduling and room spaces will be fluid, and all will revolve around a very simple schedule in the public space and a consuite where everyone can reconvene to refuel, recaffeinate, and regroup...and other words that start with re.

So we formed a small board of directors to take care of the financial and contractual stuff, and the entirety of the programming has been turned over to you. Yes you! We are taking care of the consuite (unless there happens to be someone out there who says "hey, I want to run a consuite") so that you will have the food and drink required to do some pretty amazing programming for each other...and boy have you guys already come through in a big way! Some of the awesome that is piling up:
  • Rock Band - Since Rock Band has been such a huge part of our social scene, there is certainly going to be much Rock Band-ing and rock band programming!
  • Rock Band photo shoot - [info]davehogg on LJ has discussed doing a photo shoot of themed bands that compete. Follow the link for more information.
  • 80's Dance - [info]ellalthea, [info]sheryl67, and [info]earthenwood (among others) are throwing an 80's Prom themed Dance with prizes for best costume/dress and (I guess) other stuff. Look to the blog for more information (when it becomes available) or start a thread if you want to contribute ideas.
  • Construct-A-Concert - Tom Smith ([info]filkertom) is going to play a show that consists of requests made by folks that are attending the con! Given the (hopefully) small-ish attendance for the convention, I can think of no better way to see Tom play in a small, informal setting than this August. More information right here.
  • Craft Events - With folks as crafty as [info]sheryl67 and [info]earthenwood involved, you'd have to be crazy to think that there wasn't going to be some awesome crafts-type-stuff going on, and it's looking like we won't be disappointed. Check out their thread on crafty programming to see what is being planned or to plan your own craft project. I, for one, would love to see a stitch 'n bitch or a knitting group pop in. :)
  • ConRunning - Of course, our programming wouldn't be complete without some events related to running conventions and such in Southeast Michigan. [info]matt_arnold is going to host SMOF Camp, an Open-Spaces method for meeting to discuss topics related to conrunning. Matt describes the idea in his blog entry and will hopefully start a thread in the [info]constructacon blog where your ideas, suggestions, and questions can be posted. For what it's worth, I'm considering throwing in some discussions of budget management and contract negotiation during the weekend as well.
  • Tons of other shit! - This isn't even close to a complete list. I've heard talk of marionette shows, LARPs, board gaming (I understand Penguicon is loaning its extensive gaming library to the effort), movies, and all manner of randomness.
Now, the important bit is...what do YOU want to do? It's so easy to start... if you have something you want to do, start a thread in the blog on LJ, email it to us on our mailing list, or join the mailing list/check the website for information about upcoming planning meetings. If you want, you can even join the currently very boring but hopefully one-day exciting IRC channel...#construct-a-con on irc.freenode.net. Whatever you do, though, join us for what is surely going to be a fantastic time.

I, for one, am excited as hell!
