Comics
Heavy comics week this week, including a few surprises.

Red Sonja #2 - Hmmm...interesting. We'll see where it goes, I guess.

Ultimate Iron Man #4
- Good lord. I though Warren Ellis was a slow storyteller. The "kid Tony" stuff is kinda interesting, but it's taking way to long. Make the f-ing suit already!

Ultimate Secret #3
- Did I say Warren Ellis was a slow storyteller? 'Cause I meant it. F-you, Warren Ellis!

Ultimate Spider-Man #5 - Overall, pretty good, though I tend to find the Peter/Mary Jane drama painful (not in a bad way, in a Stone doesn't like reading about problematic relationships sort of way). After this setup, next issue better have some SERIOUS ass-whooping. Yay, Ulitmate Moon Knight!!!

Black Widow #1 - Not bad. I could really do without comic writers inserting their own political commentary in the middle of my superhero books, but beyond that glitch, the plot looks potentially interesting.

Cable/Deadpool #20
- Umm...yeah. This thing MUST be laced with an addictive substance. There's no other good explanation for why I'm reading it. Really. I haven't liked a Deadpool story since somewhere around issue 38 of his own series.

New Avengers #9 - Ninja! Ninjae, even! I swear I've seen Ronin somewhere before, which leads me to think it's not Matt Murdock. I could be wrong though.

JLA Classified #12 - Wow. Warren Ellis writes so slow, his story takes place when Luthor is still president!

Ok, that's a cheap shot. There is something about this book that's a little off though. I don't really like the way some of the characters are being potrayed. And marching up the White House lawn, brushing aside secret servicemen seems quite out of character for the JLA, even when Luthor is president.

OMAC #6 - For some reason, I found this ending vaguely unsatisfying. A little too much Deus Ex Machina, I suppose.

JLA #119 - Wow. Crap. That's cool. And bad. And good. And Infinite Crisis needs to come out RIGHT NOW!

Vigilante # 1
- I had no idea this was coming out, but man was I psyched when I saw it. Vigilante was one of my favorite old DC characters...I can't wait to see what they do with him.

Ellis
I read Ellis' Hellblazer run and he was slower than mollasses. However, thats not so noticable in Hellblazer which can have 10 issues of in depth character study before fifty thousand demons swoop down on london to dine on the genitals of babies or something like that.

I didnt notice it so much in the Authority and Transmet that i read, although to be fair i didnt read too much of either.

Re: Ellis
I'm not enough of a fanboy, honestly. I would have to care far more than I do.

Re: Ellis
Yeah, in depth character study is fine for Hellblazer, or other similar titles.

For the JLA, I don't want an in-depth character study, and I certainly don't want a bunch of wankery where the JLA threatens the president of the US (even if it is president Luthor).

Ditto for the Ultimate Universe. I don't want to see Thor offering to buy the Thing and Johnny Storm beer...I want Gah Lak Tus already!

Bah.

Red Sonja #2
That's the only one of these I read...don't you read BPRD?...anyway...

I'm sad to say I don't think Red Sonja is going anywhere. I like Oeming, but so far I'm finding this comic pretty weak. Scott Allie's barely veiled disdain for the IP in an interview recently didn't help my perception.

I do think Sonja could be interesting *if* the writer were to base it more on C.L. Moore's "Jirel of Joiry" character. Jirel is a fantasy hero, but a distinctly feminine one. If you haven't read the Jirel stories (there are a few collected editions), I highly recommend them.

BTW, Stone, have you read Maus? I just finished it for class...it was fantastic.

Re: Red Sonja #2
I would read BPRD, but as you can see...I'm reading a metric ton of other stuff. And reading BPRD would require a lot of catching up.

Of course, at this rate, I might end up ditching some of this stuff...like, say, Red Sonja.

Yeah, Sonja seems like she might be an interesting character, but so far, the comic doesn't seem to hold a lot of promise. Anything where they pull the "Look! We killed the main character!" trick in issue #2 doesn't bode well.

I'll see if I can check out the Jirel stories.

Maus is, indeed, awesome. An incredibly well done piece of writing, art...the whole shebang. Someday, I need to get my own copy.
