Once more [Oct. 7th, 2008|08:41 pm]

In case anyone didn't see the previous post...

We're still looking for a fourth roommate. We've found a really great house, about a mile from the Vienna metro, but with the cost of the house and the utilities, it's not really a good option for only three people. However, it's very large and we could easily have four or even five people. It'd be something like $700/month after utilities.

My tires needed some air after a family trip to Erie yesterday. When I pulled up to the air pump, my sister was aghast that the machine required 75 cents to operate. As I fished for my 3 quarters, I said "What are you gonna do; it's inflation."

Newtown - home of street art [Oct. 6th, 2008|05:31 pm]

[Current Mood | geeky]

Last Saturday,on a stinking hot day, when early Spring was pretending to be mid-Summer, I joined a guided tour of Newtown's street art. Led by a girl with great hair extensions, & a guy with a sound system in a bright yellow wheelie bin (rubbish bin for recyclables), we followed, Pied Piper fashion to hip-hop, ska, rap & I don't know what other sorts of music (being the only non-Gen X or Y'er in the group) around Newtown's back streets, narrow lanes and tunnels under the railway lines.

I thought I had found most of the memorable art around my beloved precinct, but boy was I wrong! (Apart from my images from the Eveleigh end of Wilson street, (such as the skipping girls), I'd only seen and documented the public face of Newtown street art As well as learning about tags, bombs, graf, stencil and stickups, I also learned in that hour and half's walk that Newtown's maze of relatively mean little streets are second only to the lanes of Melbourne for the range and brilliance of its street art.

Our leader was very knowledgeable, and has interviewed many of the artists. I hope to be able to link to her research later, & may be able to acknowledge who the artists are.

I'm more qualified than Palin to be VP! [Oct. 4th, 2008|01:17 pm]

As seen in [info]muffyjo's  journal. Can you name one other court case, besides Roe v Wade? (If so, you're one up on Palin.)

Regents of the U of CA v. Bakke (1978)

UCDavis Med school twice rejected a white male applicant; he claimed since there were two distinct, race-dependent systems operating, his 14th Amendment rights and Title VI rights had been violated. Trial court & CA Supreme Court agreed, as this was not the 'least intrusive means' of the state's compelling interest in integrating the profession and increasing the number of doctors willing to serve minority populations. US Supreme Court upheld the portion of the state Supreme Court decision that Bakke be admitted and that the special admissions program was unconstitutional, but said that race could be taken into account when making admissions decisions.

6(!) overlapping dissenting and concurring opinions from the Justices.

*Powell: race could not be the ONLY consideration; Constitution does not require color-blind admissions, but are permissible if state demonstrates a compelling interest and there is no other nonracial way of correcting that discrimination. (i.e. the state has a compelling interest in the use of affirmative action to create diversity in higher education)

*Stevens: not a constitutional issue, but a statutory one: he felt that Title VI embodies a color-blind admissions standard, and this failed that test, and it was inappropriate for the court to discuss race

*Brennan: race could be used, as long as it corrects previous inequalities- the mere factor of using race was not a problem; Equal Protection Clause was moribund, and color-blind law was a fantasy, Title VI was indeed constitutional law, because that's the way Congress intended it, as an adjunct to the 14th Amendment. Individuals did not have to demonstrate discrimination, just belong to a class against which discrimination was likely

*Blackmun: affirmative action programs as eventually unnecessary, but until that time cannot be race neutral

*Marshall:consideration of race in admissions is permissible, and UCD was not in violation: the historical fact of discrimination means that we must permit the consideration of race

Powell's decision was considered the controlling one for setting precedent, at least until Hopwood, and I'm not going to go there because it makes me grumpy.

Reaction [Oct. 3rd, 2008|12:19 am]

I listened to the debate on the radio so there was probably a lot of body language I missed, but here's what I heard. Biden came across a bit wonky, heavy on the lists and figures, but basically the same basically decent, thoughtful, and passionate guy he's always been. Palin, as with the Alaska gubernatorial debates, resorted to a lot of platitudes and tried to drain every issue of whatever nuance it might have had to fit her simplified understanding of world affairs.

She said she supports full civil rights for gay people? Um, yay, but also, shyeahh....

She announced early on that she was going to answer the questions she wanted to answer and ignore the moderator, and made a point of talking about "the filter" and speaking directly to "the Americans". If that's what she was doing, let's refilter it please?

She didn't get stumped like she did with Gibson and Couric because there were few followup questions and no demands for specifics. I've always wished presidential debates could have short cross-examination periods where the candidates could have real give and take instead of dueling campaign-stop speeches, but I'm dreaming. Anyway, she stopped the bleeding a bit by demonstrating she's not a complete idiot, but when she says things like "I've been at this what, 5 weeks now", it doesn't matter if people know how empty a vessel she is in terms of policy knowledge; she came across as unready for the awesome power she's asking people to give her. She's confirmed the impression that she's unprepared, gamboling freely from one poorly thought out answer to another hoping that she'll never have to give a press conference to resolve all the crazy crap she's said. The illusion that she's a tough corruption fighter is gone, instead she's McCain's eager apprentice, improvising where experience can't inform her judgment.

"Fun" Exercise – What Would YOU Do? [Oct. 2nd, 2008|04:40 pm]

[Current Music |The David Boze Show on 770 AM]

But before I get to that, I must announce MY SON IS NOW OFFICIALLY CRAWLING!!!

My life will never be the same . . .

(He still has a lot of practice to do before he masters it, but he is definitely doing the hand-knee-hand-knee crawling action. Hooray, Babysierra!)

****

Okay, now for the "fun" exercise: Pretend you are a city official in charge of, say, patching city roads. There is a rather heavily-traveled road in town that runs through a residential area. It needs patching. Patches take about half an hour to perform; require some loud, roadbreaking equipment; and a might take little while to cure. You have three choices:

1) Pay for some flaggers to surround the road crew. Patch anytime and have the flaggers direct traffic. Put cones out or have flaggers surround the site till it is cured, if necessary.

2) Pay for someone to watch traffic patterns for a few days. Then, pay some flaggers to surround the road crew at a time when traffic is low. Patch during that time. Put cones out or have flaggers surround the site till it is cured, if necessary.

3) Don't spend any more money than it would cost to hire the road crew. Patch in the middle of the night, when traffic will not be affected.

Remember, the patch requires LOUD ROADBREAKING EQUIPMENT. The road runs through a RESIDENTIAL AREA. Where PEOPLE SLEEP.

If you chose choice numbers one or two, I will gladly contribute my tax dollars for you to patch in front of my house – even if it means I might not be able to get in or out of my driveway for a little while. (Yes, I've thought about it, and yes, it's a huge inconvenience all around – but at least it's an expected inconvenience during the daytime. *Sigh*, fine, it needs to be done.)

If you chose choice number three, you should definitely rethink it. In fact, you should probably just suck it up and spend the tax dollars. Seriously.

Because 2:30AM IS NOT AN APPROPRIATE TIME TO USE LOUD, ROADBREAKING EQUIPMENT OUTSIDE MY BEDROOM WINDOW!!!

See, I can hear conversations on the other side of the street in the middle of the afternoon outside my bedroom window. While it's closed. Waking up to a sound that can only be described as "a jackhammer", or possibly "a metal pole from a road sign caught in the brooms of a street-sweeper and being dragged down the curb" at 2:30 IN THE MORNING is NOT a pleasant way to wake up!

It probably only took ten or fifteen minutes for the thing – it looked like a cement rototiller, or something – to finish its job, but that's ten or fifteen minutes of HORRIBLE, JANGLING CACAPHONY keeping me awake! Then, the sound of dumping and sweeping (raking?) took another fifteen minutes or so. All the while, the cute little dome light on top of the city truck flashed in the window. I did think at first that it was a broken street-sweeper stuck outside, but when I saw the guys out there with the freakin' roadbreaking equipment, I could hardly believe it.

Then, of course, after they left, the sprinklers started up outside and, as usual, sprayed against the windows, waking me up again.

At least Babysierra slept through the night. 9_9

This and That, with some Bloggy Musings [Oct. 1st, 2008|09:10 pm]

First, some long-awaited pictures of my ADORABLE infant (click for larger):

funny sleep     baseball cap     almost crawling

I need to upload some from my phone, because that's what I've been using to take the most recent photos. I've been lax in my photo-taking and -uploading duties. Forgive me!

I briefly considered entering Babysierra in the Learning Curve Baby Star Photo Contest (let me know if that link doesn't work for you – I'm signed in to the site, but I don't know if you can view it when you're not. I might do QC on it, but I'm feeling kinda lazy). I thought better of it, though, especially since it would be a trip to Chicago in November – when I might be taking a weekend trip to Hawaii (no promises) during that time to visit my Sweetie while he's in school there. Also, I thought about the long-term issues of allowing my child to be a model should he win – would we be pestered by companies in the future? Would we be expected to do further shoots with this company? I don't want to put that kind of pressure on a seven-month-old. So I didn't turn in his picture.

But I just know he'd win. Who's cuter than Babysierra? Seriously? ;)

****

It's been a while since I took (let alone posted) any pictures of myself that weren't in a hospital gown, so it's about time I showed off my cute li'l self. ;)

I got my hair cut recently. I'd gotten it cut shortly after I had Babysierra, too, but never took my own pics. I finally got it cut the length and style that I wanted, and it's FANTASTICALLY easy to take care of! Finally! Easy hair that I LOVE!!!

And I'm sporting some of Mary Kay's new mineral makeup line, including the mineral powder foundation. I don't actually remember the eye colors I used, but the eye liner is the mineral eyecolor "Coal", applied with a stiff eyelining brush (Mary Kay's brush set ROCKS – SO much better than the old one!). The lip liner is "Neutral", the lipstick is "Sweet Nectar", and the lip gloss is "Sweet Raisin". Blush is "Sunny Spice".

Oh yeah, I have new glasses, too. I got my hair cut the same day I got my new glasses back (I had to send them back because the right lens was incorrect and making me nauseous), because Babysierra was sleeping and the timing was good. JC Penney's – one-stop shopping! :)

me_sultry look     me_cute smile     me_closeup

(The glasses frames are remarkably similar to my old frames, only MUCH lighter and more flexible – I got the twisty titanium ones, because I knew an infant would be snatching them off my face at every opportunity, and I still can't wear contacts.)

I'll have to try later to get a better picture of my hair. I'm learning from day to day what works in regards to styling it, but it's hard to keep it from getting fuzzy. I absolutely love the simplicity of it, though. Even fuzzy, it still looks supercute. And I can certainly settle for supercute. :)

****

Babysierra has (essentially) STARTED CRAWLING. I'm sure he took his first "steps" on Monday evening, when we were at [info]teddyeddy and [info]firebirdi's house. He has yet to get all the hand-leg coordination down, but I saw him pick up a hand and a knee and propel himself along in an indisputable crawling-like fashion. He has a tendency to lean to the side of the knee he pulls under him, giving him a side-to-side sway to his crawl that would be worthy of the Ministry of Silly Walks (Daycare Department, I'd assume). His cousin was a pro – I should someday post the video of my nephew's unique form of mobility. It was hilarious. :)

I haven't been terribly diligent in babyproofing the living room, so I really should work on that. For now, he prefers to roll everywhere, but he sure can do it quickly. He'll have his hands on something he's not supposed to before I can look up. Today I envisioned what it will be like when he's walking and talking like a big boy. Oh, I hope that day doesn't come too quickly . . . I'll miss the little baby age. :)

****

I'm trying to remember if there are any more thises or thats to add here, but I'm thinking that's it. Although I do have a sickies update: I'm still feeling crappy. Not as stuffed and runny as I was last night. No, today I have the dizzy, cotton-headed feeling with sneezing (both violent and elusive).

Bleh, I say. :p

****

I've been considering my blog(s) again. Part of me wants to make this blog either a mommyblog, or just leave it as an account to be able to read friends' blogs – but I can't just leave four years of almost daily entries . . .

I still haven't given up completely on my other blog, Rainy Day Sunshine – although my husband reminded me that I haven't posted there in almost a year. I really want that to be a crafting and opinion blog. I'll probably archive the posts I have there now and start anew. I have a few knitting projects and a sewing project that I've finished and need to post about, and then there are POLITICS I've been avoiding posting about here.

I tried to justify posting my political commentary here, but I just can't. As much as I want it to be, this isn't really a catch-all blog. It's a good day-to-day, update-my-friends-on-my-life blog, and I don't really relish alienating any of my readers with my strong political (and religious, sometimes) statements. That's not really the purpose I have for this blog.

I would, however, use Rainy Day Sunshine as an opinion blog alongside the crafting (because I'm not always crafting), but I need to get it set up to do so. Right now, it's kind of in limbo until I get around to having my hubby update the version of Wordpress and help me upload a better theme. Until then, Sweetie's given me the go-ahead to post my political ramblings over at his blog, Sigspace. He's not posting a whole lot on a regular basis, and he has no scruples about ticking off or alienating people, so it's really a great place to be biased and rabid. :) Or, at least, moderately opinionated and preachy. :) Sometimes I throw diplomacy to the wind, and sometimes I censor myself. Depends on the subject matter and how confident I feel about it. I have yet to write anything more than a "Hello, Testing" post – we'll see if I actually end up writing anything more lengthy, or if I chicken out.

Okay, so that's three blogs right there (and don't think I've forgotten about Tiny Socks – I'm still not sure what to do with that one). As much as I'd love to consolidate into one (which would probably be RDS), I just don't feel that's the best thing. But I already have Internet ADD – not to mention a life outside the Internet (which I really must pay more attention to, honestly) – so are multiple blogs the right choice for me?

Still deciding. Till then, I'll keep posting my normal random blatherings here, and hopefully get a political post or two up at Sigspace.

For now, my eyes are itchy and tired, and I should go to sleep. 'Night!

Both of my computers are currently dead so I'm completely cut off from the internet apart from a few minutes on Tomas' laptop before bed.

I'm using the time to finish off Anathem I should be finished with it tomorrow. To be honest I think it's my least favorite Stephenson book. It's like a porn movie where the sex is replaced by long theoretical/abstract/philosophical/technical conversations strung together with a little plot set in a different world with lots of made up worlds. I can appreciate the work that went into it but I'm just not really enjoying it.

Isadora lost a tooth over the weekend and when I went in to play Tooth Fairy I found a couple of notes included with the tooth. The first said, "Where do you live?" the second said, "Do you have any kids and if you do can I have one?"

Babysierra got the sniffles first. He, however, is heartier than I – my sniffles turned into a full-blown head cold. Bleh.

So now I have a stuffy head, itchy throat, watery eyes, and runny nose. Per usual, my heartburn kicks it up a notch when my throat gets sore, so I have that, too.

Yucky. Thankfully, Sweetie was home today to help me take care of Babysierra. I'm skipping all my Wednesday morning stuff tomorrow to sleep in. I'll probably skip the Wednesday night stuff, too, honestly, unless I'm feeling vastly better. Afternoons and evenings are usually worse than mornings when fighting of sinus issues.

Sweetie went grocery shopping for me today (took Babysierra with him) for soup ingredients, and I made chicken veggie soup for dinner. This time, though, I decided to play with it and made it curry chicken veggie soup. In addition to the normal veggies (cabbage, carrots, celery, turnip, and onion) and chicken, seasoned with thyme and garlic, I added lentils, kidney beans, squash, and sweet potatoes – and liberal amounts of curry powder and cumin.

It was AWESOME. And there is a LOT left. Unfortunately, my fridge and freezer are about as packed as they can get. It's amazing I got the leftovers in there!

Anyway, I need to go to bed now. Hopefully this will subside a bit by morning . . .

Great Race [Sep. 28th, 2008|09:33 pm]

Ran the 5k. Much better than last year although my official time doesn't reflect it; we spent the first half mile or so stuck behind endless hordes of walking people. Why didn't they stay to the right instead of clogging the course like a human Pachinko machine? I will always wonder.

Anyway, pace was officially just under a ten minute mile but really a bit better. Last year we didn't have any real trouble being stuck behind slowbies. More importantly, last year I suffered through the last mile, this year it was not bad at all. I couldn't have done this at all two years ago, couldn't even run a mile without stopping when I started getting in shape for the wedding.

It's nice having a benchmark like this once a year, at least for me. It's easy to let time fly by and wonder what happened isn't it?

[Current Music |Boum : Charles Trenet : Charles Trenet - Essential 5 (high Quality Restoration & Mas]

As an injection of real perspective on my life, last night, as I stood up to do dishes, my back twinged mightily & with great pain. I lay down on the floor & winced for a while with my knees in the air. Then I finished the dishes & crawled off for an uncomfortable night of putting pillows under various parts of me.

The things that occupied me yesterday are not the things that occupy me this morning. Isn’t that just the way? Yesterday was lovely. I accompanied at L*ng* (the second lesson didn’t show up, so I got a free hour!) She’s singing music from the zarzuela, which is about the catchiest tune I’ve ever played. It has this lick (it’s in C) where she jumps up from D to F over a G chord & resolves down to E on a C chord, twice in a row. A simple lick, arguably the simplest of the common practice era, but the earworm crawled into my ear, & so I now hear that lick on infinite repeat.

After that, I went to work for [info]anja0815 for a little while, grunting away at a list of all the carbon offset providers on the web. Left the office in a chearful mood, autumnal in a proper jacket & with my favorite turning-maple colored shoes. Went to H*nn*h’s for the usual H*l**tr*p* rehearsal, which went swimmingly: Marais, airs de cour, Henry Lawes songs. Took up the viol to scratch out some Josquin (Josquin!) & some gorgeous repertoire from the Cancionero de Palacio. Some Bach, & then it was time to go. After rehearsal, picked up by [info]slackalope in her new boat of car, & then we had pasta at my kitchen table.

Today promises to be all about horizontal surfaces & me supine.

[Current Music |The Michael Medved Show on 770 AM]

I had my La Leche "tea" yesterday (there isn't any tea involved, but it's a lunchtime social event – I like to call it a picnic, but they call it a "tea") and got to talk to the lactation consultant. As soon as I mentioned "supplement with formula", she knew exactly what I was talking about, and had two or three people to refer me to in the group. Those same two or three people had also had issues with the pediatrician I have as a primary care manager (who isn't actually a pediatrician – she just happens to be a nurse practitioner who works in pediatrics, something I didn't know till yesterday), and told me to switch PCMs immediately. The lactation consultant, who works in the same hospital, said to switch, as well. They ALL gave me the same name to switch to – probably the busiest pediatrician in the department now, because apparently everyone loves her. :)

I don't know that I'll go through the trouble of switching PCMs (Paperwork + Military Bureaucracy = Bleh, No Thanks). I think I'll just request the suggested pediatrician for future appointments – something I'm free to do under this program. I don't actually HAVE to see my PCM, ever. I didn't think about that, honestly, but my mom does it all the time. Growing up, I didn't see the same doctor twice – a matter of availability then. They've changed the system since. My mom requests certain doctors when she makes appointments for herself. I haven't seen a doctor in Family Practice since before Sweetie came home from Afghanistan, so I don't even know who my personal PCM is. The only doctors I've seen for myself have been in the OB department.

I stopped by the hospital on my way home last night because the lactation consultant was in after her birthing class and wanted to give me a copy of the WHO (World Health Organization) growth chart for breastfed babies. According to that chart, he's right in the middle for height (I goofed his height up yesterday – he's 26.5 in), but he's still under the curve for weight. I can't remember any of his past height/weight info, so I'm going to go to the hospital on Friday to see if I can look at his chart and write down his growth information or get a copy of it. Then, I'll plot it on my paper chart and the one [info]cienna2000 gave me in the comments yesterday – which I've played with and plotted what I remembered from the past. I think I might also take his weight on my scale (take my weight, then hold him and take his) to compare to what the hospital has for him. If I'm really feeling ambitious, I'll visit the WIC office to see if I can get a printout of his growth information (they've listed him as "high risk", too).

I have some great pictures of Babysierra eating squash – which he LOOOOVED. But, today, when I tried to feed it to him, he didn't want it! My guess is that he was full from his milk meal, and I'll have to introduce it again when he's actually hungry. Little stinker. :p The only thing he's liked consistently is banana. I was told to mix banana with avocado to get him to eat the avocado, which he has turned his nose up at every single time I've tried to feed it to him. Apparently, banana can be an emergency substitute for breastmilk for children as young as two or three months, so I'm not going to worry too much about the digestive issues that come along with such a binding food. He really likes it, it's terribly healthy for him, and it will help him put some weight on. I'll watch his diapers to make sure his poop isn't too solid, but I think it will be our best bet for really getting going on solid foods. I'll hang on to my box of rice cereal to thicken up foods I make too runny, but it does seem to make foods more bitter, even to my taste buds. I think Babysierra is a little more sensitive to taste than I am. I just don't want to give it to him all by itself, no matter how hypoallergenic it is. It's empty calories and unnecessary.

Oh, as an aside, I recently learned (by reading the label – go figure) that curry powder contains fenugreek, a known breastmilk stimulant. Whether or not it's even enough to make a difference, it's yet another reason I should make curry more often – besides the fact that Sweetie and I both LOVE IT. I would add curry powder to nearly everything sauteed or creamy if I could. MMmmmm . . . :) I made a curry chicken-veggie mix to put over rice last night, and it was awesome. I also make a great curry lentil stew (thanks to one of those random little cookbooks you can find at the grocery checkstand) that I will definitely need to make more often as the weather gets colder.

Speaking of curry . . . I have leftovers for lunch. :) I just need to make some rice. Yay leftovers! :)
