Maureen Gubia is a funky-creepy, self-taught artist from Ecuador whose spirit-like art is as haunting as it is beautiful. Her art is part accident, part intention, and the combination is usually something that is half art brut and automatism and half strong-valued detailing. Her ability to balance both ends of the spectrum catches the viewers' attention without becoming a simple reproduction of reality. Gubia has stated in an NY Arts article her art is well-integrated into her day-to-day life, because she dislikes writing; as a result, she uses art as a journal. Her art is thus surrealist in approach; like Breton, Gubia brings the marvelous to the everyday. The marriage of reality and spectacular leads to cougar-faced women, devious-looking children, disappearing heads, floating ghost hands... Gubia's interest in sleeping figures suggest a general interest in the state of dreaming and not only the state of, but the complexity of dreams and how they act as mirrors of reality.
You can visit Maureen Gubia's website at Gubia.neurasthenic.net or keep track of her art through her livejournal, gubia.
