Would anybody like a glass of smooth creamy brains?

To [info]angorian, here is the chocolate chip cookies recipe, taken from the chocolate chip package:

Original Chipits Cookies

1. Cream together 1 cup (250 mL) shortening or softened butter, 1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar. Beat in 2 eggs and 1-1 1/2 tsp (7 mL) vanilla.

2. Combine 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour, 1 tbs (5 mL) backing soda and 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt. Gradually blend into creamed mixture.

3. Stir in 1 package (350 g) Hershey Chipits Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips and 1 cup (250 mL) chopped nuts (optional).

4. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls (15 mL) onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 275F (190C) for 10 to 12 min.

Makes about 4 dozens cookies.

Enjoy!
I was very excited for the release of On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. Unfortunately, it appears to be broken on open-source graphics drivers. After a bit of debugging with some folks on the forums, it looks like the game is testing for OpenGL extensions before creating a GL context. Since we only load the driver at the time someone makes a direct context, we have no idea what to return for the extension list, and just return NULL. The game appears to take that answer and get all indignant that we don't support things like ARB_multitexture.

They're looking into it, and hopefully we'll have a playable game soon.

A bit better still...

...though my appetite is still slower going than my stomach's recovery--not that I'm complaining! It's nice not to feel nauseated for a few hours. It comes and goes, probably my system just getting its grips again. Cereal is still my hero, and I've been eating a couple of bowls with soymilk and a sprinkle of sugar in lieu of meals today. Whatever works.

So, instead of trying fruitlessly to concentrate on writing (typing in general, really), as mentioned yesterday, I've allowed PSP to suck me in again. But I got one pic out of it already--and not surprisingly, as my version of PSP is far newer--I think this one turned out a lot better than the original. Encouraging!

(If you've read WP, BTW, and like your mental image kept in place, just skip the cut. I did these sorts of things with A/Us to keep my descriptions and own mental image straight. :^))

Cut for image, 193K: Susik Kichyrn )

I really have to figure out how to do the other ones now--some are going to be much harder to recreate than others. This is going to be an on-again, off-again venture, but it'll be nice to have the "album" back eventually, even if it's just for my enjoyment--not to mention the satisfaction that I could redo it at all. :^)

grocery order and delivery

  • May. 21st, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Does anyone know of a local grocery store that will accept grocery orders online (or by fax or e-mail or phone, whatever), then prepare the order and deliver it to the NDG area?

Thank-you in advance!

So, I've had my lil' gadget about six months now, and I'm still happy with it. However, it's a power-hungry lil' mother. I generally get about twenty-four hours on a charge, less if I have a couple of hours of conversation.

Then, today (six months after I got it), I discovered that... The power is both hard and soft. Specifically, if I press the power button on top, the screen turns off completely, as do the buttons, but the phone stays on. I get a call, it rings, turns everything back on so I can see who's calling and answer it. If I press it again, everything turns back on, too. Obviously, if I hold the button down, it turns the device off completely.

For the last twenty-four hours or so, I've been testing this.

Keep in mind, I got about twenty-four hours on a charge, even just on standby with the screen on but darkened. Even if it wasn't beeping at me to charge it, I was down to a single green bar on the battery indicator.

It's now twenty hours since I unplugged the phone. Over night, I had it on standby with the screen off (from about 7pm onwards). I still have a reported full battery.

This is good.

See, I thought, right from day one, that I needed a replacement battery. Spec on the phone says that it should go standby for up to thirty days. I thought 'standby' was just 'screen not illuminated'. NOT SO! So, the next few days, I'm going to wring this thing out, and see what it's capable of giving me on the real standby with real use mixed in there. Especially tonight, when I have tendency to play games on it while I wait for [info]idioglossia to get out of her Photoshop class. I might avoid that tonight, though, by going down a bit early, parking the car, and wandering around taking some pictures, as I've some catching up to do. It's supposed to be vaguely stormy-to-clearing tonight, so I might get some good cloud cover (mmmm, dramatic) and fewer people getting in the way of my shots.

Back to the battery.

What all this means is, I may not need a new battery, I may just need a better way of using the phone, which I've found. It was a refurb when I got it, so, no manual. And I always read the manual, of course. Or not at all. Which is good. Even though I can get a replacement battery on Ebay, in several sizes (both physical and storage size) with various accessories, if I can avoid the expense, that rocks. Because between AitP, and looking at either buying or renting a place with [info]idioglossia cash is at a premium. Anything I don't have to buy is an excellent thing.

openSUSE 11.0

  • May. 21st, 2008 at 3:22 PM

I did it this time. I took my ThinkPad Z60t, the one I was not using since last September, and finally installed openSUSE 11 to replace the not yet upgraded Ubuntu. I must say that the installer is slick.... as long as your DVD media is not broken (had to redo it because the first one had errors). Everything is done very fast.

I'll not talk about the multiple imporvement, including zypper, latest GNOME, etc. (I have been running it on the desktop for quite a while).

And I chose KDE 4 as a default desktop.

And now to figure out how to fix this damn keyboard where return and the arrows don't work that well. I guess IBM quality is long gone. Update: This is a keyboard hardware problem

just port the damn client already, ncsoft!

Here's an article about trying to run MMO clients under Mac OS X, when there isn't an OS X version. Without using BootCamp or Parallels/VMWare.

Accidental, but fitting.
