...there is life after Honk! Fest. It involves resisting the urge to dance to the sound of brass bands playing in my head. And repeatedly searching Flickr and Youtube to see if anyone captured Scene of the Crime Rovers in action. I haven't come up with much, but there are some cool videos and pics of other bands floating around. Here is one I really liked: a spontaneous jam on the subway (yes, on the subway) is inevitable when members of different bands find themselves heading to the festivities on the same train.

I'm back from Honk! Fest
It was an amazing experience. We performed 3 times in 2 days (two 1-hour sets and a parade of ~2 miles), danced the nights away (and surely suffered partial hearing loss) at late-night jams, mingled/listened to/played with lots of the other fun bands. Honk! brought together 25 bands from all over the US and even from other countries (Chaotic Insurrection Ensemble from Montreal and Titubanda from Rome, Italy). One of my personal favorites was the MarchFourth Marching Band - a professionalcircus troupe big band in a class of its own. I came to both of their shows and danced my little heart out in the big outdoor crowd. Then one of their stilt walkers "danced" with me and gave me a sticker with their logo. What more could a 5-year-old a 29-year-old anyone want to forget about everything for a few moments and experience pure happiness?
Scene of the Crime Rovers stood out among the other groups with our improvisational pieces and attracted some new fans. One of them is
syarzhuk - check out his post here and enjoy the silliest photo of the weekend.
On Monday I had to go back to work. It was difficult, and not just because I needed more sleep and relief for my very sore body. I so wanted to continue replaying the many moments of this adventurous weekend and continue to hear the brass bands in my head. At the same time I had no choice but to get dressed for work, get in the car, drive to the office, and get back to whatever it is that I get paid to do all day. It was a contradictory and almost painful experience.
Now that I wrote this post I feel a little bit better.
I can't wait until our next show.

News out of Congressional hearings on Lehman Bros. talk about the lavish compensation packages that some executives got on their way out of a company on the brink of bankruptcy. But are "golden parachutes" all bad?
When former Wachovia CEO Ken Thompson was forced to retire, he walked away with $28 million. It appeared to be another bungling chief executive who stumbled — or was pushed — out of a plummeting plane, pulled the ripcord on his golden parachute and floated into a comfy retirement. But the stereotype doesn’t quite fit.

The past few months have been very busy. I haven't been spending much time on LJ, so here are some highlights.
In late June Gleb and I took a trip to California. It was our first time there and we had a great time. We flew into SF and spent 2 days there - including watching the SF Pride Parade, which we had no idea was taking place that weekend! We also tasted wine in Sonoma valley and visited Google headquarters courtesy of

The IT person in our office jokingly introduces herself by saying that she takes care of everything that plugs into a wall. However, she did not expect to find the user manual for the office refrigerator placed in her mailbox.
...really, it was 100 degrees over here when Scene of the Crime Rovers performed as the opening act of the Beaver Queen Pageant in Duke Park.
Flags led the procession...

What a great state we live in...
According to the state Attorney General's Office, public colleges in North Carolina should not admit illegal immigrants as students.
Update: Gov. Mike Easley calls on the state's community colleges to continue admitting illegal immigrants in a statement issued in the wake of advice from the state Attorney General's Office.

Waiting at the traffic light at a busy intersection this morning I was stopped next to a tractor trailer. It was a see-through truck with walls made of metal bars spaced widely enough to expose the occasional curious pig snout.

2- Supreme Court Allows Lethal Injection for Execution
