Rating: R for death, smoking, and talk of suicide.

This story is BLISS. Of course, when I say bliss I mean gritty and real and tons of people (and owls, awww.) die, which makes me sound pretty damn hypocritical when I say that this isn't a death fic. I suppose if you define a death fic as anything where anyone dies at all, then yeah, okay, it is. But no incredibly major characters die, and the ones who do get subconsciously shadowed over by Draco and "his Gryffindor".

If you've read anything I've written (especially over at the relay), you know I enjoy the little, human details. I like writing about the faults in the human body and how we succumb ourselves to addiction, not caring about the consequences. I like my characters to be honest and dirty, and I think we all can say that we, generally, like to read the same things we like to write. "Cigarette Burns" completely fulfilled that for me.

When Kayleigh asked me to beta, I was incredibly surprised to find out the pairing was Draco/Colin. Not because it's an unusual pairing, but because it's KAYLEIGH and it's DRACO and those two normally do not go within ten miles of each other. But they made an exception and I'm so happy they did. Her Draco is withering and hopeless. He's rash and somewhat heartless. Even in his dilapidating state he's still possessive ("Draco's Gryffindor"). But he's also broken. He is in no way redeemed, but he is, as she says, sobered.

I suppose what really grabbed me about this fic was the heartless way in which it was told. Most of this comes from it sort of being told from Draco's POV. There's no hiding the fact that the students are trying to kill themselves. It's a grim look at desperation and suicide and how even the good guys, even at a magical safe haven like Hogwarts, are just as lost as anyone else.

A part of a line from the last section says it best: Everyone’s a Slytherin in the end.

once upon a time, not very long ago, erb_ wrote a z/h story. this story was liked by all (gratuitous exaggeration for the sake of a story, okay?), but loved dearly (and again with the gratuitousness) by one person in particular: spectacular.

once upon a time very shortly afterwords, spectacular wrote her own z/h story in the same style as erb_s: with five keywords as a prompt. and it was good. very, very, very good. waking up and eating cake while hugh dancy gives you an inner leg massage with his cock good.

spectacular got it in her head that the two authors should continue giving each other five word prompts and continue writing z/h for the masses. and so, the two of them got together and decided to fuck any pretentious notions other people may have and created a community to house their z/h relay fic.

it was called zhficrelay, and it was good. and if you don't watch it i swear to god i'll eat you alive. and taunt you while doing it.
