When I'm not being lectured at in design class I tend to listen to my
ipod, music definitely has a profound effect on my ability to stop
procrastinating to myself and work. Lately however I've really been
getting into the music I've been listening to, lots of repeating the
same song a hundred times. Just losing myself in the complexities of
the sound, coming up with hundreds of great ideas but forgetting to do
any work. I discovered something surprising today.
I like Joanna Newsom's voice. I love it actually.
I just found this out.
I feel like I owe some people an explanation and I wish I could offer
one. Don't get me wrong, there are definite reasons as to why I do, I
just lack the vocabulary to talk about music. What I can do is compare
it to other sounds/instruments that provoke a similar reaction. I love
her voice in the same way I love the sound of a violin. When I was a
kid I used to smirkingly think a violin sounded like someone had ran
over a cat then put them on a stage with some kind of top hat and
monocle set up all the while it wailed. There's more to that image but
we'll come back to it later. Not sure when my opinions on it changed
but they did, and the violin when played right, leaves me awestruck
with its sounds.
I'm not talking about some kind of "gosh wow doesn't that just sound
swell", awestruck. I'm talking, I just fell in love, awestruck. Its a
very physical kinetic sensation, I feel my heart skip a few beats,
maybe even feel a little short of breath. Sometimes I get the same
feeling when I hear a stupidly good guitar riff, I'm not even sure sure
riff is the right word. Sudden changes in beat or octave that should be
awkward but people just pull off flawlessly have the same effect.
Sometimes all it takes is a brilliant low fi recording.
That said, sometimes when that cat is wailing in a pile on the stage, a
part of me just really wants to put it out of its misery. Sometimes the
violin hits a point that just makes me want to violently destroy
whatever the source of that sound is. Joanna Newsom too. Most of milk
eyed mender suffuses me with a genuine joy whenever I hear it.
Inflammatory Writ, what the fuck is wrong with you you crazy bitch?
YOU'VE RUINED EVERYTHING! Because of that one song I'd never really sat
down and listened to the rest of the album as anything more than
background noise. When on a whim today I skipped to track seven I was
struck by how stupid I was not to give the album more time.
I've been missing out on a cool thing, and I'm happy I'm not in the
dark about it anymore is basically what you could call the main thrust
of this post.
I had more to write about australian politics but that can wait for a fit a raging fury.
Also, for some reason she looks like she should be carrying a bag of dice and a cape in this photo.
