![]() title: A Dorinian Rhapsody story by: Karl written by: This is a story journal for an original fantasy story that I'm in the process of writing. The story is not complete, but since I've already completed about half of it upon the creation of this journal, I will hopefully be able to post old chapters as I continue to write the new ones without too much time lapse between chapters. I will post all chapters behind an lj cut so that they won't run the risk of taking up half of someone's friends page. This was created for two reasons: to help me keep my story in an easily viewable place, and to help keep me motivated to finish it. The journal is friends only (see below on the reason and policy for this), and will remain that way. ~ ![]() This story started as an attempt to pass the time before sunset as my brother-in-law, Karl and I waited for it on the top of a hill at King's Canyon National Park in California. In an attempt to make the last 5 or 10 minutes before dusk go quicker, Karl began telling me this story. It lasted us past sunset and for the entire hour long car ride back home. It's been my goal for the past 3 years since that summer to write it down for him and give it to him as a present. ~ ![]() Karl was 26 at the time that the story was told to me. I was 15, and am now 18. Karl works for a power company and is in the merchant marines; I'm graduating from high school this May and will be attending college in the fall. Karl and his wife, my sister, currently reside in California; I live in Texas. ~ ![]() Since both Karl and I are big Terry Pratchett fans, we both tried to capture a Terryesque feel to this story, him while telling it and me while writing it. Other fans of this author will see some similiarities in some of the characters and style. The story itself is a fantasy story, and so far some of its underlying motifs are music (the name of the kingdom, Dorian, is a scale in jazz), escape of the mundane, and, of course, good v. evil (wouldn't be a fantasy story without it). As of now, the story should be appropriate for most ages to read, sparing some mild cursing from time to time. I'd probably guess at middle school age on, but I'm terrible at guessing those sorts of things. My long term plan for this story so far only includes finishing and sending it to Karl, but I may eventually like to publish it, which is why I'm locking it down. ~ ![]() There are three protagonists in the story: a man named John, a wizard named Gawain, and a dog named Rufus. The antagonist won't be revealed here. ~ ![]() I have a moderate amount of personal paranoia. Since I may eventually have plans for this little thing, I don't want to risk losing my hold on it by posting it online for all the world to see. Yes, I want other people to be able to read it and comment on it as they'd like, and no I don't have to personally know you to entrust you to reading my story without stealing it, its characters, or its general idea. I just want to know who's reading my story, and I'll feel more confident that I won't see it published under someone else's name. ~ ![]() Anyone who wants to read this story is welcome to. I know that making this journal friends only will unfortunately make it less accessible to several people who are curious, but not curious enough to add another friend to their own journal, especially on such little information about the story. If you'd like to read along a little bit, but lose interest, don't hesitate to comment, friend me, and then unfriend me. I won't take it personally. For this reason I'd appreciate it if you friend me back when you request to be added; when I see that I'm no longer on your friends list, I will assume you've lost interest and remove you from my own list. If I friend you, I'm trusting you not to recreate or redistribute my story in any way, shape or form. If you'd like to use a quote or a character or anything else for any reason, just ask and I'll probably OK it. I'm really pretty easy going, as long as I know what's going on. Comments on entries are not necessary, but are appreciated. I don't do much editing before I post, since I'm trying to write an awful lot rather quickly, so if you feel the need to point out a grammatical error or editing help, it'd be most appreciated. This, again, is not necessary. Please do not post promotions to me, but if you'd like to invite me to a relevant writing community, you're more than welcome to. Basically, the Friends Only is not to scare people off, but only to protect what I've written from less than honest trolls and surfers. ~ Now that that's all out of the way, thanks for coming by, and should you choose to read along with me, I hope you enjoy the journey! ![]() |
