Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

I like to think I am reasonably well traveled, been to Europe, drove through all the regions of the continental United States.

None of the places I have been, do I get stared at like in the grocery store of my home town Hereford. Really, the greeter/help you pack your car boy was too stunned to say hi, kids hiding behind displays to take a peak and the younger ones who don't even try to hide it. I do appreciate the mom who told their kid that people can have their hair how ever they want and it was rude to point.

It was kind of fun, I felt all punk ass cool walking back to the car.

Yeah I've never had the kind of reactions I got in the US anywhere else in the world. Even small rural towns with populations of less than 10 with no public transport had less staring and pointing. But then getting pointed at is fun. Chased with pitchforks less so.

At a restaurant in Raleigh/Durham the waitress was too afraid of the group I was with to come within five feet of the table when she took our orders.

Gotta love it

The funny thing I have always observed is that group is almost always unfailingly nice and tip well for good service, above the average table and way better than the booze cruise hours. Just a little bit noisy and funny looking.

I'm not sure whether that's hilarious or depressing.

It's funny because I like to be the ambassador for freaks. It's something very new and unique for the kids to see and I can understand their curiosity.

The first time I saw punks in real life was at the mall when I was having dinner with my mom. I casually commented that I didn't think I would want that sort of attention. They overheard me and stared at me the rest of the meal. It kind of made a big impression on me.

That makes sense. Hell, part of the reason I want to do my camp is to show kids that it's ok to be a freak.

There's still room for you at the camp if you want to join us. I think you'd be an awesome example for the kids.

I've gotten to the point where something feels wrong if I'm *not* being stared at. I think the worst I've gotten of that has been on Long Island.

Funny how our lives twist and change. For years I wore hard core, and found it funny when my friends would get pissed that folks stared at us. "What are looking at lady!", my dumb punk rock girl yelled once, I said, "You, and that 12 inch tall pink thing on your head, what'da expect!" I mean, I knew I looked like a freak. It was on purpose. I wore Dreads for a long time as well, went to Rainbow Gatherings, etc. Now adays, I tend to always wear overalls, boots and even a straw hat. Never realizing that I looked like and Amish man gone wrong, with my tattoos hanging out of my sleeves, or earrings, and heavy celtic jewelry. One day, my wife mistook an Amish man for me. She thought she saw me come out of store, went to pick me up in the van, and drove past the guy laughing. Now we know why folks are staring at me still, even though I think I look so straight these days. It's the little things that keep them confused. I have thought about going green for my hair this year, which would truly throw them. Like Farmer John who has been in his garden too long. Which I am, and I have.

dude, hereford is dumb.

when i dyed jlynn's mohawk (my stepdaughter; see icon) this dark purple, some people were really impressed and gave her compliments, others freaked out.

now that it's short and no longer a mohawk and mostly brown, she gets TONS of compliments (most recently from the post office lady).
