Being green on Mars with Bauer [Wednesday
August 2nd, 2006 at 6:00pm]
"You're still alive, she said." Borrowing from Eddie Vedder. If you know me, you know it's in my DNA to do so. So despite it being five months since I've written here - and said I intended to write every day - I am still kicking around the Puget Sound. Still doing too much Boston Legal stuff. Still ironicaly burnt out on Boston Legal. Still making a living doing computer stuff. I am supposed to be figuring out why my client is not getting emailed when someone uses the form I set up - so, instead, I'm writing about things on my mind this week.

I should be working on the Boston Legal podcast for "Breast in Show". I should get the car registration renewed. I should prune stuff in the yard. I should get out in nature. I should procrastinate more.

[ music | The Boston Legal podcast that I'm simultaneously editing ]

Coming up on four months since I've updated my journal. My LJ friend Turi nudged me a month ago and, like my first car, the engine of good intentions is only just now getting warmed up. Also like exercise and good habits, I'm going from complete inertia to pledging to write something every day. It's not for the few who read this, but for me. I figure one day I'll be glad I did.

CBS Netcast: "Henry Winkler sits down with Dana..." [Sunday
October 16th, 2005 at 11:57pm]
CBS unveiled my interviews on CBS.com a few weeks ago. I couldn't be happier! They'll be rolling out an interview each weekday so with thirty different podcasts with thirty-five actors, I guess there will be new 'Dana talks with...' content every day for six weeks. Wanna keep up with it?
http://www.cbs.com/netcast/

For whatever reason, I've procrastinated writing in my journal about the whole experience, so thank goodness a reporter decided to do some of it for me. Here's the link:

Want to be CBS's first podcaster? [Tuesday
August 9th, 2005 at 5:23pm]
So Rob alerted me to this announcement that CBS is looking for a podcaster. How could I not send them my submission? It's what I do and I'm such an entertainment evangelist. The network is searching for "... an amateur DJ to interview CBS stars and create a podcast about the new fall season. The podcaster will be at the CBS Radio Junket on September 10 in Hollywood to interview CBS talent for the podcast, which will be made available to millions via CBS.com."

Sort of a contest thing. I grabbed my Lone Gunmen interview, edited down to their 3 min. requirement and just sent it off. Wish me luck

Podcasts, USA Today and Rob [Wednesday
July 13th, 2005 at 10:33am]

Our radio show is, again, in today's USA Today newspaper on the front page of the Money section:

Podcasting goes from indie to mainstream overnight: | article | pdf |
Rob Greenlee[excerpt] "Some early podcasts, such as Rob Greenlee's WebTalk Radio, were digital versions of existing radio shows. But most were new. Podcasting is open to anyone "with a laptop and a $6 microphone," Greenlee says."

Rob's been quoted a few more times in the media in the last month:
Apple adds directory of podcasts to iTunes lineup | article | pdf |
San Jose Mercury News
June 29, 2005
[excerpt] "But Rob Greenlee, host of WebTalk World Radio Show, predicted not everyone would benefit equally from Apple's entry into the world of podcasting -- just those podcasts that Apple ranks among the top 100 programs. "It's going to be a very small group of podcasts that get a significant impact in the short run," said Greenlee, who was among the first to begin podcasting."

Barnako goes to Gnomedex | article | pdf |
Investor's Business Daily
June 24, 2005
[excerpt] "Good chat with WebTalk's Rob Greenlee (one of the tallest guys I've ever met). H and I shook our heads about how Microsoft blew podcasting. The world's largest software company launched software to download audio content to your PocketPC (sound familiar?). Ad then let it die. Sync 'n Go ... RIP."

[Rob's 6'8" and, yes, decades of basketball under his belt]

Podcasting's 'indies' are losing ground | article |
MarketWatch
July 18, 2005
[excerpt] "Rob Greenlee, producer of WebTalkRadio.com, said he believes Winer shouldn't be compared to brand-name output from Bravo TV, MSNBC and Air America. "Most of the early podcasters are only going to be popular with the PodcastAlley.com crowd," said. "It will be the media celebrities like Leo Laporte and Al Franken and Ted Koppel who will dominate the podcasting space."

[Note that in the article, Rob's quoted after Winer but before Adam Curry and Mark Cuban. These are podcast and dotcom rock stars. Hey - that means I'm married to a rock star!]

A previous article in USA Today quoting Rob is here.

Our talk show podcast is in the iTunes Podcast directory, just fyi. WebTalk Radio is listed under News, Technology and Talk Radio. If you already have iTunes installed, click to launch our show page in iTunes

If not:
Windows Media Real MP3 [July 9 show only]

If you're plugged into the whole podcast phenomena, some interesting trivia is we were the first terrestrial radio show to podcast, back last September. This is substantiated in Wikipedia's history of podcast page here; see first sentence. Eulogy-worthy. Maybe.

Rob's also been selected as Microsoft's MVP for digital media, a go-to guy when they want to get feedback or discuss ideas and directions for the future in digital media. He goes to their campus a few times each month for meetings. His NDA keeps him from discussing it further, but it's fascinating.

On a personal note, I don't mention Rob enough in my journal. That's disproportionate to how much he means to me. He makes me so proud and he is truly the kindest, funniest, most laid-back guy I know, apart from my dad. We work together, do the radio show together, explore the world around us together and I'm continually ready for the next fun thing we'll do. I hope everyone reading this has that kind of person in their life

United States of Whatever [Thursday

Dana grapples with her inner Chrissie Hynde
site stats

Where has this song been all my life. No, I'm no longer a punk or an anarchist or a rebel. Not the kind of girl who says 'whatever' or would even think of being as rude as Liam. But I adore this song, this video, this vibe to my very core. At least for the next week - or whatever...

Play the video [real player]

It's been a few months - creative, musical months - since I shared my first quarter playlist. I bought a guitar since then and started embracing my inner Chrissie Hynde. Q2 brings more flashbacks, more theme songs and more commentary. I trimmed my 500 song playlist [yes, music I've been listening to only since April] to about 200 songs and included my thoughts on some. Some Rage, Ice, Keen Eddie, Cash, Ringo, Crue, even Nimoy. If this scares you, don't click.

Transcendent Killer [Friday
May 27th, 2005 at 10:33pm]
Mt. Rainier from Dana's backyard
Mt. Rainier came out from behind clouds this week for the first time since I can recall. Many months, at least. I took this one from my backyard the same day rescuers recovered the bodies of Tim and Greg who died in an epic snowstorm Saturday that dumped two feet of snow in five hours. Tim was a retired United Airlines pilot who lived a few miles from me. His nephew Greg was a web guy at the University of Washington. Last year, we lost five climbers. Tim and Greg are the first this year. They were seen hiking up to Camp Muir but the storm began about four hours after they started the climb and probably never made it to Muir. They were found face up about 200 yards from the main trail, their headlamps still on. Hypothermia from crazy wind and temps in the low 20's.
_________

I love Rainier. It's probably my favorite piece of geography in the world. However, Nature doesn't care if it's loved or hated. Whether an ocean wave or sliding plates or water that turns to hard ice somewhere in the sky and hammers the earth, it does what it does and we could be doing everything right and still get whacked off our feet. That Saturday, the wildest hail storm I've ever experienced slammed our home. Instantly, the sky was dark and a white layer of ice covered everything. Gleefully, I leaned out of an upstairs window and shreiked as the big ice chunks pelted me. I didn't know until later that this same storm was killing Tim and Greg.site stats

Fathers and daughters [Sunday

SeaFox FarmSeaFox Farm
Watch the video http://Loudvox.com/videos/SeaFox.wmv [2:34 3.8 mb; windows media]

I'm so lucky. I have the best dad in the world. He turned 78 last week, but he looks and acts exactly like he did when I was a teenager and he was a medical center admin guy. Dad was unfailingly supportive and encouraging every step of our lives together. [So is my southern belle of a mother, but this entry is about dad] Somehow, he instilled in me to be kind and compassionate for the sake of it. I never remember any discipline. If I did test his patience, that was indicated by one single snap of his fingers or a very quietly spoken "Dana" that was never meant to scare me. I just felt 'I've disappointed him' and I'd correct my errant ways. But those moments were rare. I can characterize our relationship as pure love and respect. We have a little game of who can get away with doing something for the other without getting caught. If caught, our dance would be to get the other person to undo the good deed ["No, you can't pick up the check"; "Already done." I swipe his credit card out of the servers hands and insert my card; a struggle ensues; we finally call a truce, proclaiming imminent revenge]

My parents retired and moved from California to the Key Penninsula, a long stretch of land in the middle of the Puget Sound in western Washington. From 1/4 acre in suburbia to fifty acres with bear, eagles, coyote, foxes, seals, orcas and, really, a family compound. My sister and her husband also moved up and build a home on the property [although he commutes back to So Cal every week to work] and I moved from LA with them, having just divorced and looking for a place a little less apocalyptic than Hollywood. I lived on SeaFox Farm with them, in a loft over the garage, until I bought my own home in town

So... his birthday. Dad, naturally, insists there be no gifts or for anyone to do anything for him. He'd as soon hop on his John Deere and mow fifty acres, clear a felled cedar, muck the horse stables, make yet another flower bed for mom. Instead, I made a video of their place. It's shaky and amatuerish, but he takes such joy in the land. You know what? My father... I love him so much. Don't ever go, Dad.

Why I love the Pacific Northwest [Wednesday
April 20th, 2005 at 3:28pm]
Climbing Mt. St. Helens in the rain and fog
Why do I love it here in the Pacific Northwest?
It's nearly hiking season. May is great if you prefer snow hiking. July's best for mountain climbing, before the snow becomes unstable, August is fab for rock scrambling. This year I'm getting an annual pass to Mt. Rainier and aim for a once per week trip.

On to the reasons I love Washington.
1. Rain rocks
2. We have real mountains - the kind with glaciers and the likelihood of erupting
3. I never go hiking without waterproof matches and Gortex. (see photo)

Music [Wednesday

The Whiskey on the Sunset Strip, March 16, 2005
Eleven years ago today, the music important to me died. Cobain.

Does that phrase seem trite? Agreed. It's been overdone, but, like all cliches [including this one], its a cliche because it's true.

The Whisky A Go-Go was sort of my mecca. I took this picture of it a few weeks ago when I was in West Hollywood. At sixteen, wearing my 'death to disco' shirt one night in '77, Rodney Bingenheimer introduced me to an L.A. Times reporter. I made it into a piece about the L.A. punk scene as the suburban kid with braces who was a weekend clubber.

Yeah, high on my diverse list: Sex Pistols, the Monkees reunion, The Babys, The Damned. Kind of eclectic. Still am. My current musical tastes, from my Real Rhapsody playlist, is behind the cut.

LAX to Seatac [Sunday
March 20th, 2005 at 12:10am]
Seat 20A to 19A
"So you mean I moved from my seat in the last row that can't recline to this one and now you expect me to not recline it?" She was one of those women that looked too much like a man. One of those women that had a chip on their shoulder, so used to acting offended that it came naturally. All I did was ask if she could return her seat to the upright position. Please. Because I was seated behind her on United flight 474 departing LAX to Seattle.

"I'm just asking. I'm sorry."
*silence*

"OK. I won't ask again." It's more important to me to keep the peace than to be comfortable. Never mind my laptop was opened like a skinny wedge, hemmed in behind Rude Obnoxious Lesbian.

Boston Legal cast and producers at the Television Festival [Thursday
March 17th, 2005 at 1:13am]

Warm, charming, relaxed with a shade of weariness, professional with a nuance of smirk, collegial banter with a smattering of inside jokes.

That was the producers and cast of Boston Legal last night at the Directors Guild of America. The Museum of Television and Radio's annual Television Festival in Hollywood.

Moments

"The Practice Unbound" with a Dickensian quality."
- Scott Kaufer, Exec. Producer, on Boston Legal's style

"The show's visuals are glossy, not gritty."

ABC Outfoxed: a Boston Legal illegality [Wednesday
March 9th, 2005 at 8:27pm]

According to JimGilliam.com, ABC ordered David E. Kelley to remove all references to Fox News from the script for Boston Legal's "Let Sales Ring" episode airing March 13. Gilliam says this "...included the clip from "Outfoxed" where Bill O'Reilly threatens war protesters in the same sentence he promises not to demonize anyone." Gilliam co-produced "Outfoxed".

I own the "Outfoxed" dvd and knew the clip Jim Gilliam referenced that was edited out, so... yes, I did it. I put it up at my site Boston-Legal.org. Go there and watch it. It's just two mintues long.

I'm making no political or cable news statements. Simply letting the 13.6 million viewers (per recent ratings) that would have seen it a chance to watch it. Full access, you know? (But I've also asked permission of Gilliam... albeit, after the fact.)

Mount St. Helens - now and in '94 [Tuesday
March 8th, 2005 at 7:13pm]
Back in 1994, I had a goal to climb all the volcanos in the Pacific Northwest. Ha - does two and a half count? Mt. Rainier, not to the top, Mt. Adams, best glissade in the world and the now-abbreviated Mt. St. Helens.

I was at the summit three times and inside the crater twice that year. No one is allowed inside the crater except for USGS and a select few from the International Glacial Speleological Society - the study of ice caves - under the pretense of filming a documentary. That's how I got in. Sulpher, very hot rocks and amazing caves carved out around the dome.

Me, hanging out next to the lava dome. More inside the crater and from on the rim.

Tonight - magnma, and a 36,000' ash plume, changed the landscape of where I stood.

A fish hook to a moment [Friday
March 4th, 2005 at 1:51am]
Minding my own business. Then --

-- a rock steady beat. The Selector | On My Radio

I am no longer 'now'. I am nineteen, listening to a passionate Geldof-lookalike ranting about Margaret Thatcher in a dubious youth hostel in London.

-- garage glam. The Runaways | Cherry Bomb

I'm sixteen, practicing the bass guitar, wearing my religious academy P.E. shirt, standing in an open garage with my sad excuse for a band The Rats in San Bernardino. I AM Joan Jett.

-- blond ska. The Police | Message in a Bottle

Walking along a British motorway - in the rain - in the dark. Trying to get back to the dorm before they notice I was gone to big, bad London. Homesick but when they sang 'sending out an sos', it became warm and bright and I didn't mind going back to being the only American in a dorm room with two German girls, a French girl (who stole my boyfriend) and a Kiwi.

These were my fish hooks to a moment that was long ago but not really more than an instant away. Warp speed.

Boston Legal Head Cases [Wednesday
March 2nd, 2005 at 10:14pm]

If you know me, you'll understand my mood when I started reading a copy of Boston Legal's episode 1 script that arrived in the mail today. It's phenomenally different than the finished product.

Sally: Now, go like this. *She licks her lips, slowly*
Shore: Because...?
Sally: Moist lips send a subliminal message of power. I saw it on the The View.

[cut to later in firm's International staff meeting; unspoken conflict occurs between Shore and Brad Chase]

Shore: I'm sorry, we're not territorial about that sort of thing around here, are we?
*Brad regards Shore for another beat, then smiles, decides to be the bigger man, moves to the seat where Shore shoved his stuff. Tara takes the seat between them. Shore turns to her*
Shore: [re: Brad] That was close. Almost had to moisten my lips there.

Haha - that line sure would have ramped up the slashy vibrations for those two.

Face your fears, er.. face [Tuesday
March 1st, 2005 at 6:13pm]
There's a reason that cliche was coined - she has a face for radio. Body, too. Then again, I'm not keen on my voice, either.

So a good friend told me she puts images up of herself to sort of ... well, I won't speak for her reason, but what I got out of it was if you put it out there, you're not hiding. That's a step in the right direction. So no, this is not easy, but...

Vintage Spader [Tuesday

| What Do You Want From Life | The Tubes

Watch Spader & McCarthy interviewed by Fee Waybill (The Tubes) in 1986 at the MTV Pretty in Pink premiere.

[windows media; 7 mb; 2:43]

Is it just me or do Spader and McCarthy seems overly jovial. Fee, on the other hand, seems to be subdued, relatively speaking. I saw The Tubes do their bondage-cum-punk show in The Valley at the end of the '70's. Ah, 'White Punks on Dope' made me feel less suburban than I really was.

This is also at JamesSpader.org, the site I run along with [info]_redcorvette. Thanks to Susan aka nigelsmum, who sent this interview to me and gave me permission to share it. Susan has a page of screenshots and the transcript here.
