“Living in a multicultural society takes time. It is a long educational process.” [Aug. 1st, 2010|01:13 am]
[mood |optimisticoptimistic]

well its been over a year since I last posted but better late than never ;)

Alot has happened in the last year and a bit but for now lets just think of the present.

I have just moved to London and am about to start a new job on Monday. The flat I have moved into kind of reminds me of a holiday hotel.

There is constantly music playing with multiple genres and volumes colliding to create an intresting symphony of noise. I can hear from the balcony many languages and as of yet have overheard loud conversations in Hebrew, Indian, Polish, what i think is Swahli, Arabic, and Russian but no English ones yet.

It maybe because its the summer holidays but untill about midnight there are kids playing up and down the street which I find both life affirming and depressing at the same time.

Its not as if I have felt in danger at anypoint but the change from living in the quiet and upmarket Cardiff Bay to East London is a shock especcialy when buffered by a month living back in Hertfordshire in the middle of a field!

Change is good for the soul but I'm nervous about the new job, living in London, and being with out the support network I had in Cardiff. But having said all that if things work out well I can see myself being happy here which I have not truly been for a long time.

[music |*the king blues - Mr Music Man*]

woooo managed to get to a big issue seller so i will be going to the ball.. i mean gig tonight :)

The lead singer of the King Blues used to be homeless so every year they try to support the big issue by putting on free gigs to anyone who has the current issue of the big issue. (for those of you not from the UK the big issue is a magazine written and sold by homeless people giving them a way to make money instead of begging as well as support to get accomidation etc)

only problem is i dont know anyone going :( oh well less people to embarasse with my skanking :)

Saw a local band called gindrinker and the breaks on Monday.
Was actually a really good gig even though I had only ever really heard a handful of songs from either band.

It was also the first time I had been to "Tommys Bar" which is in one of the UWIC buildings just off newport road. A nice little venue once you get there (need to get buzzed into the main UWIC building by security) and Its size and atmosphere would be good for other intimate gigs although tonight it appeared to be populated by the "indie massive" of cardiff and many odd haircuts and cloths were on display. Many people seemed to know each other but were more comfortable standing silently while trying to look cool instead of socialising untill the bands came on where a couple of people threw some odd shapes and the rest sung along whenever they knew the lyrics.

Gindrinker sound very much like the fall but with a more electric noise merchant on guitar. Spoken word lyrics sung/vehemently shouted into the mic very impressively by Gemmas friend (who is the lead singer of the Cardiff two piece) even if he does look a bit like a hobit. The Guitarist seemed to enjoy attempting to use any exposed area of the stage/venue/bar to play his guitar with and took to creating his own revereb effect by shaking his guitar above his head. All in all i think i preferred the sound of the songs on their recordings but there was an extra passion to the lyrics live.

The Brakes were good fun, the lead singer dressed in a one piece silver tracksuit/space man costume was a great front man and the whole band interacted with the crowd well with some good banter. They seemed to move between three types of song, melodic indy-ish songs, energetic indy/punk mix type songs, and short (like about 30 seconds) thrash screaming"songs". The lead singers voice had a raspy shout to it and reminded me quite alot of Joe Strummers in some way. the drums and Lead guitar were tight and although slightly off at time the bassist had some good riffs going on.

All in all a good night and i would recommend going to see either band if you get a chance.

now this week i have:
Friday=wii+take away straight after work with mates followed by pub and then Barfly
Saturday= if im an not too hungover from above then Bowling and Bogiez with old housemate Liam
sunday=rest, tidy, and try to get to lvl 79 in AoC
Monday=King Blues Big Issue Gig if i can get a big issue and que up in time as it is first come first served due to free (with big issue) entry.

how are you lot then?

[mood |hungryhungry]

Hey all,

almost finished my first week back at work and it has been hard work! soo very tired and for some reason hungry ALL the time...

my Brother is visiting this weekend (well he is up for a friends pre wedding drinks as he cant make the wedding) so hopefully i will be able to get a chance to chat to him and make sure he is ok. I've been worrying about him since i got the results as he sent me two really long emails about it and they didn't have the best tone if you know what i mean.

Last week was quite good and i managed to catch up with a few people and drink a hell of a lot but it just wasn't as good as i thought it would be :S im still feeling odd, happy about the results obviously but still odd.

Anyway best get back to work now, hope everyone is doing well?

another day in a semi-deserted office almost over :)
decided to forget about the flexi time as i can go in to the minus figures so long as i work the hours back in a month....

so a nice 5 day weekend starting on the 1st :) then half day on the 9th followed by my two weeks off.. which im actually dreading because of why i took them off but hey soon it will be all done!

got my Amazon order (thanks for the vouchers Father Christmas) and quite like the new Rise Against album, looking forward to seeing them in Feb.

Also indulged my geeky inner child by getting the Watchmen graphic novel which i have been meaning to read since before the film was announced.

all topped off by the joe Strummer documentry and Murakami's After Dark although i need to finish the Grapes of Wrath and Iain Bank's The Steep Approach to Garbadale first.. i hate reading two books at once but keep going in bursts with both.

Suitably geeky for a Wednesday morning:

In celebration of their 10th birthday, Google
have temporarily opened up their 2001 index for searching
. It like freeking going back in time man!!!!

9/11, YouTube, iPod.

can you find anything else that didn't exist in the same way as it does now back in 2001?
"wikipedia" isnt the same and i love the fact taht "credit crunch" raises results on 1997's subprime problems
