Oh come on!

He can't regenerate yet! I love Ten! They can't be switching Doctors this quick. I suppose I can live with the revolving companions, however annoying it is. (I start getting used to one, boom! she's gone.) But I would rather like to keep this Doctor for a bit longer. Let's hope it's all a clever ruse to keep us all glued to our chairs come next Saturday shall we?

Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY stjarna1984!

Er, I'm 11 minutes late.. but still.

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Computer troubles and a newfound love of McKay/Ronon

My computer has no sound. At all. Wtf? And I have no idea what could've caused it. COME ON 'PUTER I NEED TO WATCH DR WHO NOW KTHNX.

I've started reading SGA fic this past week and my OTP is so Rodney/Ronon. Which is kind of annoying as there are about 50 or so R/R fics in total and now I've read pretty much all of them.

It's been a long time since I got caught up in and reading fic in a fandom without having access to the source material (I did read Buffy, Sentinel and Highlander fic way before I watched the shows). Before this week I'd seen maybe a handful of SGA eps and now I've downloaded a few more from season 4, but to be honest, I like the slash more than I like the show. Except maybe the Ronon bits because I'm having a bit of a crush atm. I blame it on PMS.

Random criticism

I just do not get Scorsese's obsession with Leonardo DiCaprio. I do get why he kept making films with Robert DeNiro, because, hey, Robert DeNiro. But Leo? Eh? He has no range! He keeps doing different variations of the same character. WHAT IS GOING ON MARTY?

...

Yeah that was random.

*

Oi!

Where did summer go?

We had a lovely weekend weatherwise, warm and sunny with a perfectly blue sky but er.. now, while still sunny, it's 11 degrees C outside? Eh?

Anyways. My dad tried to sneak away from celebrating his 60th birthday by faffing off to Valencia next weekend. Silly dad. Naturally we ambushed him and abducted him to another city for some celebrating this weekend instead. Picnic in the park was had, as well as a nice dinner at our posh hotel and quite a satisfying amount of wine, yay! I did have to deal with my uncles but I survived mostly intact which is yet another cause for celebration.

There's something in my fridge that smells so.so. awful and it's polluting the entire place but I can't figure out what it is. It smells of rot so I thought it was something going bad that I'd forgotten about but I can't find anything! Tomorrow I shall have to scrub the entire fridge and hope it'll go away. Seriously, it smells like something died in there. *gags*

In happier news, today I recievied not only my DVD copy of There Will Be Blood, but also The Ballad of Jack and Rose. *pets*

Mad crushes and things like that

Ok, it's official. I have a mad crush on Daniel Day-Lewis. I never took much notice of him before There Will Be Blood, aside from noting that he was a great actor, but now? MAD MAD CRUSH OMG I WANT TO HAVE HIS BABIES. Or, you know, if I actually wanted to have babies, they would so be his.

I don't know what is up with this obsession I have with middle aged men. I mean, the last proper celebrity crush I had was with Viggo. He and DDL are at about the same age. The last semi-crush (or rather, on-going) was with Johnny Depp, who's just a few years younger.

I'm really just a Freudian smorgasboard aren't I?

That aside, I bought some really cute shoes at H&M yesterday. Green ballerina flats with white polka dots. Puppy took one look and then tried to eat them.

Dude. Elephants can paint. (and a hell of a lot better than I can too)

<lj-embed id="1" />

Human arrogance have always assumed that we are so much better than all other animals but the more and more I see of research (like how way elephants are aware of their own selves, something that was considered to be uniquely human for a long time) and evidence like this, the more I am convinced that we are just so wrong in that assumption. Animals like apes, dolphins, elephants (among many others) show such skill and intelligence and emotion that seeing them as less than human (they're different yes, but not necessarily less), simply because they don't communicate the same way we do, and thinking that we have the right to kill and/or imprison them seems grotesque.

I drink your milkshake

I don't think I've been quite so obsessed with a film since LotR as I am over There Will Be Blood. It's wonderful and it makes me happy but it is also immensly frustrating since, unlike LotR, this fandom is tiny and there are hardly any fic. I've read the same five stories over and over for three days now and while they're good stories, (great stories even, which is surprising for such a small fandom), it's getting a little frustrating.

Vanishing Act by dreamyoudeny
[gen, Daniel/Eli subtext]

Pyrrhic Victory by dreamyoudeny
[R Daniel Plainview/Eli Sunday] Brilliant characterisation.

Two Untitled ficlets by poorfrances
[R, Daniel/Eli]

And my absolute favourite:

Two Wrongs, Twice Removed by janegodzilla
[NC-17, dub-con.
There Will Be Blood is the best film made in the past five years Y/Y?

I saw it last night and now I'm obsessed and desperate for fic and there aren't none!

Well, except for this one by bitterfic.
ridiculous body ideals + relief

I started watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles yesterday (mostly because of Summer Glau. River yay!) and after two episodes I'm pretty much hooked. It's not terribly original and the first two movies were decidedly better (we'll just ignore the third shall we?) but still, I have a growing fondness for it.

However, there's one thing that made me vaguely pissed off and that was Sarah Connor herself or rather, her body. Not because she's a skinny woman without visible muscle tone, I can buy that without too much trouble. You don't have to be bulky to be strong (even though Linda Hamilton looked awesome in T2.). What did make me go wtf was her stats shown on a computer screen, according to which she's 5,5" and weighs 110 lbs. ... Excuse me?! That would mean she has a BMI of 18.3 which according to most counts as underweight.

We're talking here about a warrior woman. Someone who's spent the better part of two decades preparing for war and protecting her son from evil cyborgs from the future. Her body is her most important tool for that and, if you go by T2 canon she spends quite a lot of time making sure it's a strong and well-functioning one. So why would she be underweight? Especially as muscle weighs more than fat so she should in fact have a higher BMI than your average skinny 5,5" woman, yes?

I have a hard time understanding why TPTB felt the need to tell us how much Sarah Connor weighs and I have an even harder time understanding why they would make it such an absurdly low weight for a physically strong woman. Rampant paranoia makes me think it's because they want to keep up the ridiculous Hollywood pretense that having a BMI under 20 is in fact healthy and normal for women, even though, you know it's kinda not. (Not to slam those women who naturally do have low BMI's; it's just that most of us don't, but we keep getting pressured into trying.)

Yeah. Rant over. *goes to watch more Sarah Connor* ;P

***

I recieved wonderful news about my grandmother today. You know that horrible lump on her nose (which grew to be almost the size of her nose)? She and my mum went to her appointment today and according to the doctor the lump was caused by some sort of virus (I forgot to ask its name, I was so relieved) and they removed it right away, and she should be fine as soon as her nose heals up. *has been all giddy all day* I always expect the worst when it comes to illnesses, so it's so incredibly good to know I was worrying about nothing much at all. :D

Apparently venting on LiveJournal makes TPTB sit up and listen. 0.o

My gran finally got scheduled for surgery. It's three weeks (!) from now but still, it's better than not knowing at all what's going on. At least now I know they're aware of her existance.

***

In other news, I'm still not finished with the thesis (and oh how surprised I am. Not.) Oh well.

***

In much nicer, and distracting news, the annual booksale will soon be upon us. I've just pre-ordered 25 books. I am v. happy about this fact. :) I do rather wish they'd come with built-in shelf-space though. *g*

Woes.

New crash. This time it was the screen. Although neither me nor Dell support knew that so my computer returned today after a two week absence (one of them courtesy of the reading-skills lacking dimwit who jotted down my phone number wrong) and the screen was as black as the day the computer left me (I've borrowed one of my dad's screens for now). Not only that, but even after changing RAM, CPU and mother board yet again, the blasted thing still doesn't work properly. In fact, it's worse than before. I could just cry. In fact I have cried quite a bit as I've got a master's thesis due in january and I've just lost a month and we're nowhere near done and this bloody computer just won't work. I've just spent two hours on it and now everything's just choked. And now I've got yet another Dell session to look forward to.

God, it's like every time I get on livejournal these days I just whinge and complain. I swear I'm cheerful sometimes! Though recently anything computer related tends to make me rather depressed.

***

I wanted to send out Christmas cards and stuff but since I can't even be sure I'll have access to the computer long enough to jot down adresses I guess that shall have to wait until next Christmas. If you have a card/adress post I wouldn't mind a link though. You could have a New Years card instead! :)

I has a new motherboard

Dude, my computer crashed. In a toasty kind of way. Me and my favourite Dell person discovered burnt fuses and brown plastic and other nasty things wot should not be on the insides of my computer, like ever. Faulty things are now replaced and my computer doesn't sound as if it's dying anymore. And I can play SIMS 2 w00t! Something I haven't been able to do for more than a year.

It's still being loud and slow and whiny though so I'm not counting on it lasting terribly long, but at least now I can use it for more than surfing and Word.

***

I saw Muse on 21 Oct. It was brilliant and sweaty and awesome and alldeles, alldeles underbart. I could've done without the tall fuckheads (I mean really, does height and size automatically turn you into a gigantic jerk? wtf?) but once I learned how to duck and stay on my feet whenever the moshpit waves hit it was all good. And Muse was fantastic. And Dom's got a froggy little dork voice <3. And Matt spoke Swedish! Sort of. It was Swedish-ish anyway. And I need to see them again, preferably tomorrow. I so wish I had the cash to travel to see them.

Whoever took these clips must've stood almost right next to me. I think I can see my own head bobbing there but the angle is bit wrong so it's probably only a head-lookalike.

Muse, Stockholm, Hovet 21 Oct. Highlights part 1, Highlights part 2.

Ok, so I haven't actually downloaded anything this season, except for House. Partly because I've been sort of meh and not sure what shows I'd be interested in and partly because of thesis-related paranoia. (As we're writing about filesharing). So basically what I want to ask is:

1) What new shows have you been downloading?

2) Are they any good?

3) Where have you downloaded them from? I've downloaded from torrentspy for a couple of years but their recent splurge of anonymus uploaders and cancelled comments feature has made me all paranoid about getting my torrents from them.

So, uh, yeah.
Mmm... soup

I am not normally a fan of autumn, but even I have to admit that sitting indoors with a bowl of hot vegetable soup and watching the rain is pretty darn cosy.

Another thing of the good is that I can now actually see the rain, instead of just a blurry mess. I got my new glasses yesterday and realized that the world is in fact not made up of fuzzy shapes. I approve.

It's strange how sometimes you can be so bouncy and up that it turns into this kinda depressed, weird feeling instead. Like nothing can actually live up to the happy feeling you have so suddenly it's just all about failed expectations instead.
