Random Question Anyone know of a place in town (or drivably nearby) that sells cricket supplies? I've tried all the sporting goods places in Gainesville, and no luck. |

(question for slow runners who have improved their speed...) (this question is specifically for those of you who started out really slow but managed to significantly increase your speed. when i first started trying to run, i was averaging a 30 minute mile. i'm not joking. i was slower with my little jog than if i had just walked the distance. with the amazing cool running couch-to-5k program, i managed to cut my mile time down in half to 15 minutes. with more training and some attempts at speed training mixed in, i managed to get my mile time down to around 13 minutes. if i run with everything i've got in me, i can run at about a 9.5 minute mile speed for like 3/4ths of a mile. and i'll probably puke afterwards and be congested for a couple of days. that's how rough that is on me. for those of you who started out doing something like at 15 minute mile and improved, how fast can you run now? how long did it take you? i think one of the things i really struggled with when i was training for my first marathon were the weekly tempo runs. the coach would tell us to run 2 miles at a 5k speed and then blah blah blah at blah speed. i honestly cannot tell how fast i'm going. i did my last long run for this half marathon training at a leisurely speed, i didn't push myself at all and i did 13.44 miles in 03:08:34. i ran with all my heart and soul yesterday and did the half in 03:05:50. i mean sure, we could subtract my 12 minute porta potty break but the point is that i can't body sense my speed. i try and i try and i try but i can't tell the difference. i'm feeling discouraged with my speed right now and i'm determined to do something about it.) |

knee crappiness I posted a little while ago about a knee issue I'd been experiencing and it has gotten worse. Basically, when I run, my right knee gets really tight and I can feel something inflamed. It doesn't hurt, per se, just...feels weird and very not right. Well after a run when I try to bend my knee it stays this way and feels like I have too-tight rubber bands running under my knee cap. I've been trying to do some strength training (lunges and squats) because I know I have weak-ish legs. I can't bicycle for shit. Overall I need to build muscle. Anyway, the lunges definitely made it worse and actually painful. I've heard that squats are bad for knees but I've read that the opposite is true. So maybe I was doing them wrong. Anyway, I refrained from running today because after 2 minute the knee felt shitty.
Long story short, is this something worth seeing a doctor over? I asked my mom about it (...to see if she'd cover my copay) and she kept saying "Why see a doctor? What are they going to be able to do? Some people just shouldn't run." Well, I'm not ready to give up running. In the grand scheme of things, I've only just discovered it and it's the best stress reliever, weight manager and heart strengthener ever. And I refuse to believe that I--a healthy, young person--just can't run.
Anyway, I need advice and some morale boosting. See a doctor? I don't want to be a wuss but I would like to prevent injury. And it's not true right? That some people "just shouldn't run"? |

Tufts 10K After not running for May and June and then barely being able to run in July, I was desperately trying to start running again. My coach told me sign up for the Tufts 10K. I did it last year, and there's so many walkers that even if I just walk the 6 miles it would be good for me.
So I spent most of August and September really trying to remember how to run. Last week I finally went for my pre-race six mile run in 1:20. I could hardly believe it.
This morning was a beautiful morning for a race. Cool and sunny. It's a great race because it's big and there's a huge range of abilities. I lined up with my friends (who soon left me because they all run faster), and set off. My goal was to try and just walk through the water stations. I ended up walk two other time, but no more than a few minutes at time and probably less than 10 minutes total.
The clock for the first mile showed 13 something but it was only 25 when I got to mile two. I was running about a 12 minute mile. I didn't think I'd be closed to sustaining that pace for very long. However as each mile ticked off I wasn't losing time.
After one last walk break, I ran hard for the last half mile. I crossed the finish line at just past 1:17. My chip time was 1:15:45 which, while not a PR, is only 3 minutes short. Darn good after such a rough summer. Much faster than last week. Gotta love the race environment. |

gold + sequins + classy ? ...idk so i am trying to find a gold sequined cocktail dress that leans more towards the conservative side (which i am positive is nearly impossible as nothing that combines gold & sequins assumes modesty). just, i would rather not look like i came off the stage from a middle school tap dance routine.
any ideas where i should look?
i live on the hill so i have tried the boutiques up here, including red light. i also even tried champion party supply in queen anne, some thrift shops, & found those places slightly too much on the costumey side anyway. i am going to try nordstrom rack. my spending range goes up to around 100, though there is classier versions of gold designer dresses for much more money. it is just not that serious.

The Other Bubblies: Prosecco and Cava Whether it’s celebrating the New Year, birthdays, promotions, or simply life itself, we have all experienced events worth of cracking open a nice bottle of champagne. However, a quality bottle of bubbly can put quite a dent in your checkbook with popular champagne brands ranging anywhere from $50-300 dollars or more in price. With that said, there are budget friendly alternatives found in sparkling wines such as Prosecco, and Cava, for those who would like to drink well without spending a small fortune. Although Champagne is a sparkling wine, not all sparkling wines can be considered champagne. Technically, true champagne can only come from the Champagne region in France where it was originally developed in the early 1500. The fermentation process needed in order to produce sparking wine, however, can be duplicated anywhere. For example Cava (which retails between $12-40), is predominately produced in Spain. This is a white, or pink, sparkling wine, although occasionally one can find a red cava blend. The carbon dioxide in Cava, which is what creates the bubbles and fizz, can come either from the fermentation process, or by having carbon dioxide injected into the cask. Cava is, predominantly known for the dryness of its flavor.

Smoking Ban and 25 Feet Public Health sues 2 bars over outdoor smokingI voted against this law only because of the 25 foot rule. It was stupid and still is. I remember the spokesperson trying to placate voters - claiming that they wouldn't try to enforce the 25 foot ban (I wish I could find a link). Gee what do you know - he was lying. |

Name a UF Skeptical Organization Hello, everyone. I'm planning on starting up a skeptics group as a UF student organization. My first speed bump is that I need a catchy name. I've come up with "Gator Skeptics" and the "UF Skeptical Society". I was hoping that the internet brain trust could come up with some other ideas. Thanks. (Cross posted to ufstudents.) |

Lawyer Recommendation for divorce with kids I'm looking for personal experiences and personal recommendations. I've done the google and the memories section thing already :) If anyone can help I'd appreciate it!
My brother recently discovered that his wife is leading a double life. The nature is so extreme that he is wishing to seek a divorce immediately, but it is more complicated for several reasons. They have a son together, and my brother would wish to seek primary custody (we have valid but unprovable at this time reasons for believing her to be unfit). I know that in WA's no-fault, mother-is-favored court system he has an uphill battle ahead of him.
I'm trying to find a good lawyer who has experience winning cases like his. Anyone know any? Or have any experience in this situation? |

Achilles Strain/Tendonitis EDIT: Sorry... I had a case of "this makes sense in my brain so therefore it makes sense to everyone else". *stops being so egocentric* So the back story is that I developed some painful achilles strain/tendonitis last Saturday (not 2 days ago- the one before that). I stopped running on it and iced it, elevated it, stayed off it as best I could (not that feasible in my job as a kindergarten music teacher whose office is currently downstairs and classroom upstairs), wrapped it... all that good stuff. NOW as of yesterday it's feeling better. *hopes the rest of this makes sense now and apologizes for being an idiot*
I don't know exactly what it is because the soonest I could get a doctor's appointment was October 30. Yeah. Way to help a girl out.
I WAS training for the Disney World Marathon before I got hurt. Yesterday I woke up feeling FINE and after going on the elliptical (pretty fast, but at the lowest resistance), I could feel the stretch but still no pain. I put heat on it last night before bed.
Today it again feels fine. I've been on it all day and dancing with my kindergarten music students and it feels totally normal. I've also been stretching it, and I feel more of a stretch in my calves than anything else. I guess they are stiff from not running.
Anyway... I REALLY need to get back to training if I am going to do this marathon (my first)... otherwise I'm going to have to cancel and make plans for a different marathon. :(
I am going to go on the elliptical again tonight but I'd like to start running tomorrow... does this sound like a bad idea to anyone?? I don't mind running slowly to get back into it, but I also don't want to do more damage. I can go to a free pain clinic at a physical therapy place this Thursday, but like I said, the doc is not until the end of the month. |

16 Miler So I'm training for the Philly Marathon at the moment and I'm following Hal Higdon's Novice program. I was supposed to run 16 miles today but I was only able to get through 6 because of pretty bad shin splints (I may or may not have done a speed work out in the wrong shoes last week)and now I'm not totally sure how to progress with the schedule. Should I just skip to the 18 miler this week and try to get a 16 mile run in during one of the step back weeks? Which would be 18, 16, 20 or just no worry about the 16 at all? Should I try to make up at least part of these miles in my short runs throughout the coming weeks? Or possibly get a couple of two-a-days in? This is my first marathon and must admit that I was pretty freaked out without skipping a long run, so now I'm even more so. Any thoughts? |

Anyone else running the Columbus Half-Marathon on Sunday? I remember seeing other people in this forum who've mentioned they're running either the half or the full marathon here in Columbus, OH next weekend. Just curious if everyone is feeling excited, nervous, etc. I am all of the above. It's my first half, but I've done my training, and I think I'm as prepared as I can be, and I know it'll be fine, no matter what my time is. I'm aiming for 10 minute miles the whole way. I've run long training runs at that pace, and I know I can do it, but right now though I'm nervous and freaking out and wanting to just run it and get it over with, so I wanted some people to commiserate with, ha ha! |

Numb toe Hi all! I started running again recently and the strangest thing, my big toe has started going numb. It hasn't stopped and I'm wondering if its the running, my shoes (which are admittedly old) or something else... So I'd thought I'd bring it here to see if anyone has had a similar problem or knows what could be causing it.
Thanks! |

Sick =/= half marathon? I'm due to run a half marathon on the 26th Oct (Niagara Falls)
At the moment (and for the last week or so) I haven't been training due to a throat infection (virus so I just have to wait until it goes, no antibiotics) and before that my training was a bit lacking (I've recently moved from the UK to Toronto so obviously was super busy).
It's my first half, I've only ever done 10ks before.
My original goal was to run the whole thing, but now I'm thinking I can do it with walks even though my training has been pretty bad in the last few weeks.
Thoughts?
I hope to be over this infection by wed/thurs of this week (hope!!) |
